Chapter 44 What Watches Us Bloom
Chapter 44 What Watches Us Bloom
Selene & Hecate
They watch from the space between moments.
Where time softens.
Where fate exhales.
“She has grown,” Selene murmurs, moonlight pooling at her feet as she gazes down at the ceremony below. “Not hardened. Not diminished. Grown.”
Hecate’s smile is slower, knowing. Power coils around her like smoke and starlight. “She learned to survive first. Only then could she learn to become.”
Below them, Nyra laughs—bright, unguarded, alive. The sound ripples outward, touching earth and air alike.
“She carries new life,” Selene says softly.
“Yes,” Hecate replies. “And with it, renewal. Not just of blood… but of balance.”
Selene turns, silver eyes thoughtful. “She does not yet know who she truly comes from.”
“No,” Hecate agrees. “The woman who raised her was never meant to keep her. Only to hide her.”
“A vessel,” Selene says gently. “Not a lineage.”
Hecate’s gaze sharpens. “The truth will come. When the child stirs. When the world demands answers.”
They fall silent, watching Nyra lean into Malakai, the bond between them radiant and whole.
“She is no longer only protected,” Selene says. “She is becoming the protector.”
“And a mother,” Hecate adds softly. “Which will change everything.”
Nyra
The night is a blur of laughter, music, and warmth.
The pack celebrates like they’ve been holding their breath for generations. Hands brush mine as I pass, smiles everywhere, voices calling my name—not with expectation, but affection.
I dance. I laugh. I forget to be afraid.
Malakai never strays far, his presence a steady gravity even when he’s across the room. Every time our eyes meet, my chest tightens with something so full it almost hurts.
I need to tell him.
The thought settles, gentle but insistent.
I slip through the crowd and take his hand, tugging him toward the quieter wing of the packhouse. He follows easily, smiling—until my steps slow.
Nervousness creeps in.
What if he’s not ready?
What if I’ve imagined this future too quickly?
I stop walking.
Malakai
I feel it the instant she falters.
Her excitement dims, replaced by uncertainty that hums through the bond like a sudden chill. I turn and pull her into my arms without hesitation, pressing her against my chest.
“Hey,” I murmur, brushing my thumb along her jaw. “Talk to me.”
Astrael stirs, alert.
Her scent, he says. It’s… different.
I inhale deeply, grounding myself in her—moonlight, warmth, home—but beneath it is something new. Subtle. Alive.
Nyra looks up at me, eyes shining with nerves and hope tangled together.
“What if—” she starts, then stops, swallowing hard.
I tip my forehead to hers. “Whatever it is, we face it together.”
Her breath shudders.
“I’m pregnant.”
The world stills.
Astrael’s presence surges—pure awe, fierce joy.
Ours.
I stare at her for a heartbeat, letting the truth settle into my bones.
Then I laugh—raw, disbelieving, joyful—and scoop her up, spinning her once before pressing my mouth to hers in a kiss full of promise and devotion.
“I’ve never wanted anything more,” I whisper against her lips. “You. Our child. This life.”
Her laughter melts into mine as I hold her close, heart bursting with a future I didn’t dare dream this big.
And somewhere beyond sight, the world listens—because something ancient has just smiled.
