Chapter 5
Larry parked his car in the parking garage. He shut the car off and turned to Rebecca. "We're here."
"I wish I hadn't remembered that."
"It must have been awful," Larry said. "Let's go upstairs and get a drink."
"Why am I just remembering the bad things?"
"I don't know. Maybe you have to remember the bad things to cherish the good," Larry said. He got out of the car and walked around to the other side. He opened the door and helped her out. He locked up the car as they walked over to the elevator. He pressed the button and they waited. "You have lived through the fight and you'll live through the memory. You have to stay strong. Nothing like that will ever happen to you again."
"I just want to know why it happened."
"I know you do," Larry said. The elevator doors opened. They stepped in.
Carl closed the doors and pushed in the access codes.
The elevator stopped and the doors opened. "Can you please ask Shelly and Duane to come up with any mail I may have?"
"Yes sir."
"Thanks Carl." Larry said then ushered Rebecca out of the elevator. They went inside. Larry turned on the lights and walked Rebecca to the couch. She sat down. Larry walked over to the bar. He grabbed two glasses and filled them half-way up. He carried them over to the couch and sat down next to Rebecca. He handed one to Rebecca. "Drink some. It will make you feel better."
Rebecca took a sip. "Who's Shelly and Duane?"
"They are hotel staff," Larry said. "I have to go to the office in the morning. They will stay here with you."
"I don't need anyone to stay here with me."
"It will make me feel better." Larry said as he took a drink. "Besides, it wouldn't hurt to have a woman to talk to."
"I don't need a babysitter."
"I know you don't. If I didn't have to go into work, I wouldn't. I wouldn't be able to do what I have to do if I didn't know you were safe and have someone with you."
"I guess I could always stay in my room if I wanted to."
"Yes, you could, but it wouldn't hurt to talk to other people."
"Maybe." Rebecca took another sip. "I can try, I guess."
"It will just be a couple of hours," Larry said.
"All right, Larry. If it will make you feel better."
"Yes it will," he said. Someone knocked at the door. Larry got up and walked over to the door. He opened it. "Come on in."
"Here's your mail and what you asked me to get." Shelly said as they walked in. She handed him a box.
"Thank you," Larry said. They walked into the room following Larry. "Shelly, Duane, this is Rebecca. Rebecca, this is Shelly, she's my general manager and Duane, head of security."
"Hello," Rebecca said.
"Hi Rebecca. How has you stay been?"
"Larry is quite a good person. He's done so much for me."
"Actually, all the clothes, Shelley picked out."
"I figured a woman had a hand in on it."
"Nice to meet you, Rebecca." Duane said.
"I want you two to stay here with Rebecca tomorrow while I go to the office."
"Yes sir." Duane said.
"It will only be for a couple of hours."
"Don't worry we'll keep her company." Shelly said.
"Excuse me." Rebecca said as she got up. "I have to use the restroom." She walked down the hall to her room.
"She's been through a rough time tonight."
"Does she know who she is yet?"
"No. She's remembered what happened to her but don't know why."
"It must be tough."
"It is. I will be leaving about eight in the morning."
"We'll be here."
"Great," Larry said. "I don't want her here by herself if she has a memory come back. She might stay in her room though."
"I charged the laptop and phone. I put in your number."
"Thank you," Larry said. "Has Brian updated you of any progress?"
"No, but I know he's working on it."
"All right," Larry said. "I just wanted you to meet Rebecca. I'll see you in the morning."
"If you need anything else, just call."
"I will, thanks." Larry said then followed them to the door. He let them out then closed the door behind them. He went into the room and poured himself another drink. He picked up the laptop and phone then sat down on the couch. He pulled out the phone and looked at it. He put in some numbers and put it down. He took the laptop and cord out of the box.
Rebecca came out into the room. "Did they leave?"
"Yes," Larry said. "I just wanted you to meet them."
Rebecca walked over and sat down next to him. "Are you working?"
"No. I got you this so maybe you could look and see if something triggers something."
"Oh. Thank you."
"I'm just setting it up for you," Larry said. "I also got you a phone so you can call or text me."
Rebecca reached over and picked up the phone. "You didn't have to do this. It's too much."
"I wish I could do more," Larry said.
"You have done so much for me already," Rebecca said. "I wish I could do something for you."
"No strings attached, remember."
"Yes I remember," Rebecca said. She looked at the phone. "So, you put your number, Shelly's, and Duane's number in here?"
"Yes. If you need anything, Shelly is the one to call. Except security, then call Duane. Of course, you can always call me." Larry said as he put the laptop to the coffee table. He picked up his drink and took a sip. "I just want you to get your memory back so you can move on with your life."
"What if I don't get it back? What if I never remember who I am."
"Doctor Rogers said it takes some time for your brain to heal. The neurologist said you should make a full recovery." Larry said as he took her hand. "It just takes time."
"I know. Everybody keeps telling me that," Rebecca said. "I want so bad to know who I am and to have a life. I want to know if you can be part of my life or if I have someone else."
"No matter what happens. I can be part of your life. We can be friends." Larry said then finished his drink. He got up and walked across the room.
Rebecca got up and walked slowly up behind him. "Would you be happy with just being friends?"
"It doesn't matter." Larry said then turned around. "No matter what happens you can trust me to make the right decision."
"Thank you," Rebecca said.
Larry's phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and looked at it. "I have to take this." He said then stepped away. He answered. "Yes, Tom, what is it?" He asked. "It's fine. Hold on. I have to go to the office." He took the phone off his ear. "I will just be a couple minutes."
"Take your time. I'll just check out the computer."
Larry walked down the hall to his office. Rebecca walked over and sat down. She picked up the laptop and started typing.
Larry came back into the room about half an hour later. He sat down on the couch next to Rebecca. "Sorry it took so long."
"That's all right. I was just trying to find me, but there are so many Rebecca's around."
"I know."
"I found you, though."
"Really? What does it say about me?"
"I'm sure you already know."
"Probably but you can't always believe what you read."
"I know," Rebecca said. "Were there problems at work?"
"No problems really. Tom just needed to double check some things."
"Good."
"I was actually on the phone with him when you came into the office earlier."
"Really?"
"Yes. We are about to close a deal and he wants to double or triple check everything."
"I guess that a good thing."
"I guess."
"What's this project?"
"It's a hotel," Larry said. "The buyer wanted so much done to the place. It turned out really good."
"That's great."
"Yes, it is," Larry said.
"Do you visit the places that you buy and sell?"
"Yes. That's one of the things I like the most. I travel all over."
"That's good. I think I would like to travel," Rebecca said.
Larry got up and went over to the bar. He poured himself another drink. He went back and sat down. "Do you want to watch a movie or something?"
"Sure." Rebecca said as she put the laptop on the coffee table. She got up and went to the refrigerator and got out a bottle of water. She went back and sat down. They agreed on a movie and started watching it.
When the movie went off, Rebecca headed off to bed. Larry put the glasses in the sink and made coffee for the morning. He turned off all the lights and went to bed.
