Chapter 174 - Wanted by the Alpha Brothers
That night I didn't get very much sleep at all. I was tossing and turning all night until I finally got up and I went downstairs to the kitchen to get a drink. That's where I bumped into Ivy. She was down there giving the baby a bottle.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt." I say.
"What are you talking about? It's the middle of the night. I welcome the intrusion at this time of night." She says. And I chuckle.
"I just came to get a drink. I can't sleep." I say getting a bottle of water out of the fridge and I sat at the kitchen island next to her.
"I can imagine. Tonight was pretty massive for you, wasn't it?" She asked.
"Yeah. It was." I say.
"I know that things haven't been easy for you. I get that. I know exactly how that is. I grew up knowing my father but I didn't actually know that he was my father. He was the Alpha of my old pack and he raped my mother when she was 14. She got pregnant with me and she was shunned by the whole pack. He ordered the pack to hate her and me. Her own family didn't have anything to do with her after that. But she was a great mother. She never treated me like it was my fault. She never accused me of ruining her life. She worked her ass off and became a doctor while raising me on her own." Ivy explained.
"Oh my god. That's unbelievable." I say.
"My mother was an exception. We were really close. But he got her in the end. He didn't want her spilling his dirty little secrets. So he killed her just after we moved here. Luckily, the Silverton's took me in." She explained.
"Did you know that Asher was your mate then?" I asked.
"I had just found out. And I had sort of started dating Beau before that." She says.
"What?" I asked, shocked.
"Yeah. We were both 17 and neither of us knew that Asher was my mate." She says.
"Wow. That would have been awkward." I say.
"It wasn't really. Beau left town so that he wasn't in the way. I didn't have those mate feelings towards Asher and he didn't want to stand in between mates. So he left town for a while." Ivy says.
"Beau sounds like a pretty decent guy for doing that." I say.
"He is. And I couldn't love him more. It's obviously now a brother-in-law situation. But I do love him and he is family. And he's my sister's mate instead." She says.
"Yeah. That's bizarre. I never knew that I was Noah's mate. He knew but I didn't. He just started paying attention to me one day and I didn't know why. It was the pull. It was even before he turned 18. He knew that I was his mate, but I didn't even know about werewolves." I say.
"Yeah. That would have made things a little complicated." She says.
"I thought it might be cool to be a werewolf when you all became public knowledge. But to actually find out that I am one, that was weird. I'm still trying to get over that. And then to find out that my father is a vampire. Is there anything you can tell me about vampires?" I asked.
"What do you want to know?" She asked.
"You said that my father killed for the fun of it. Is that true?" I asked.
"Yeah. Some vampires are like drug addicts. And their drug of choice is blood. They don't kill because they're hungry, they kill because they want to. They're addicted to it. They need to do it. They're the ones that you really need to watch out for. And then there are the typical ones who only kill when they are hungry. Some vampires even rip off blood banks so that they don't actually have to kill people. They just feed on their blood without killing or hurting anyone. Some feed on animals to survive. And then there's the day walkers." Ivy explained.
"Day walkers? Vampires can walk in daylight?" I asked.
"Not all of them. But some of them. And if you're not in tune with your werewolf abilities then you won't be able to tell them apart from humans. If they are like the drug addicts then they are the ones that you need to be really careful of." Ivy explained.
"I think this is all doing my head in." I say.
"I know it's a lot. There is a lot to learn about it. We have a library here in the packhouse if you want to check it out. We try to keep detailed records of vampires and especially all vampires that we meet. I have journals in there that I add too all the time. I've already written tonight's entry. About your father. And what I noticed about him." Ivy explained.
"That's a really good idea. Especially for future generations." I say.
"Exactly. I don't want my kids to be dealing with this stuff in 30 years and have no information to go on. It's not fair on them. Or my grandchildren." She says. She then put Jesse up on her shoulder and started patting his back.
"You're really lucky to have found the family that you did." I say.
"Hey, it's your family now too. Don't forget that. Asher is already arranging your official introduction to the pack." She tells me.
"Really? When will that happen?" I asked.
"In a couple of days. You and Noah will be introduced to everyone and you will be made part of this pack by Asher and myself. It'll be a big day for you two." She says.
"Yeah. Sounds like it. Someone will have to talk me through that day. I have no idea what it involves." I say.
"Don't worry. We'll make sure that you're ready." She says.
"Don't you have a nanny or someone to do this stuff for you in the middle of the night?" I asked.
"I do. But I like this time with the kids. Whatever time I can get with them really. I always feel guilty having to leave them all the time." She says.
"Yeah. It can't be easy." I say.
"It's really not." She says.
Ivy and I stayed in the kitchen talking for a little while longer before we both started heading back upstairs and she put Jesse in his cot in his room and then she went to her room and I went to my room. Noah was still asleep so I sat on the windowsill looking out at the forest and listening to how peaceful it was here.
The middle of the night was the time to be up. Apart from the patrols that we could hear in the woods, there was nothing else. Complete quiet. And I was hoping that would help me get my thoughts in order, but it didn't help. I didn't really think I had a choice. I needed to go and meet them at midnight or they were going to kill Noah. I couldn't let that happen. But I felt horrible. I felt like I was letting Ivy down.
Her and Asher did so much to make sure that I was here and I was safe and now I was going to practically spit in their faces and take off with the vampires. I just hope that one day they will understand that I had no choice. They will kill Noah, no matter what. And then probably come after everyone else in this pack that I am starting to get to know and like. I couldn't let that happen. What if something happened to Ivy's children? She would definitely never forgive me then.
So I had no choice. I needed to do what I had to do. And that was to protect everyone around me. Protect my so-called new family. I'd made up my mind and that's the way it had to be. I wasn't going to let Noah get hurt because of me. No way in hell. I loved him too much for that. I knew that he would try and find me, but with the vampires, I doubt he would ever be able to find me. At least not on his own. I hope Ivy and Asher stay out of it.
The whole next day I kept to myself, I didn't have much to do with anyone else. I spent a lot of time in the library looking over everything they had on vampires so that I was prepared. I needed to know what was real and what was myth. Holy water didn't hurt them. A wooden stake to the heart did. A herb called Vervain hurt them really bad and in big quantities could kill them. I guess that was a start.
I had to wait until Noah was snoring that night before I snuck out of the bedroom and I went downstairs.
I put my shoes on while I was downstairs and then I heard Jesse crying so I needed to get out of there before Ivy came downstairs.
I made my way through the woods and I was hoping that I was going the right way. I didn't see any patrols through the woods which I thought was really weird. But there was no around to stop me and I got to the same trees as the ones from last night.
I looked at my watch and right at midnight I looked up and there were three men standing right in front of me. I didn't even hear them coming and I almost jumped out of my skin.
"I am impressed. You follow instructions well." The man says.
"Just don't hurt my mate or my friends." I say.
"I don't need to since that you showed up." He says.
"What do you want with me?" I asked.
"It's not me. I don't really care. But the boss wants you. He wants his daughter. That's all he said." The guy says.
"Well, he never cared before now. Why would he care so much now?" I asked.
"We learnt a long time ago not to ask questions of him. We just take orders." He says.
"Well, that's pathetic." I say.
"It's survival. Now come on, let's go." He says, stepping over the border and he grabbed my arm. But then I heard this weird noise.
Something flying threw the air making a whooshing noise through the air and the vampire stopped right in front of me and froze where he was. He looked at me with wide eyes and I looked down to see a wooden arrow sticking out of his heart.
He then started turning this weird gray color and weird veins were appearing all over his body and he fell to the ground not moving. I could tell that he was dead.
I turned around quickly and I saw Ivy behind me. Standing next to a tree holding a bow and arrow.
The other two vampires tried to grab me the second that they could and suddenly they were attacked by wolves that jumped out of the woods at them and they were killed instantly. And I stood there in shock staring at Ivy.
She just put the bow and arrow down and looked straight at me. But her look was indecipherable. I couldn't tell what she was thinking or how she was feeling right now.
"Let's go Regan." She says simply while I was still standing there in shock.
