Chapter 16: The Invited Guest

Lacey's phone buzzed loudly as she walked downstairs that afternoon, she had called in sick at work therefore making her able to stay in that day. Imagine her shock at the end of the day when she checked her phone screen and saw that her boss was calling.

" Good afternoon, Mr. Dave." She greeted him in a cool voice and he didn't reply immediately. She removed her phone from her ear and waited to see if he had made a mistake of dialing her number.

" Good afternoon, sir." She repeated.

Then, a buzzing sound filtered into her ears from the other side, " what are you doing at home, Mrs Lacey?" He asked.

" I'm not feeling well, Mr. Dave, I sent in my letter of permission earlier, sir." She replied with her eyes a bit wide. But I sent in the email, didn't I?

" Are you saying I'm lying? Would I call you if I had seen it?" He asked in a harsh voice and she shut her eyes slowly. This was not what she wanted to hear at all.

" I'm sorry, sir. I didn't know that my email didn't get delivered." She apologized, hoping that he didn't say that her salary would be deducted.

" Well, there's something you can do to make it up to me."

" Anything sir." She replied quickly then facepalmed when she finished speaking. What was she thinking of when she said that word? What if he gave her a task that she could never achieve?

" Mr. Alistair is having a party tonight, it's happening in his private home, in the countryside. He specifically asked for you. You can help us strike the deal. I'm sure that you would be coming, right?" H asked and she groaned in annoyance.

" Yes, sir. I'll be there sir. I just need to take my medication..."

" That's what I wanted to hear, I'll send a gown to you tonight. Do everything you can to make sure that he agrees to our deal. You know what it means for us right?" Her boss interrupted her.

She rolled her eyes, " Yes, sir. I'll try my best, sir."

" I want it to be enough. There's no room for error, you know that right?" He asked her again and she nodded violently, that her head began to throb.

She sighed when the call disconnected, at least she was not losing her job or getting her salary deducted. She raised her head and looked around the house trying to understand why there was no one downstairs at this time.

What would have happened if she had a good husband who would be able to rub minds with her and make sure that she was safe? Assisting her with work, she had heard about couples who helped each other with their duties and they still came out victorious. They were both killing it in their respective disciplines.

She heard the sprinkler go off and water began to gush out without control. Who was manning that thing? Didn't the person know that they paid for light? She wondered as she marched outside.

As usual, she saw the only person who could make this stupid mistake. " What are you doing? Do you want us to run into debt?!" She shouted. She wasn't working her ass off just to see her money being wasted.

" Don't tell me you didn't know that you were supposed to switch that thing off immediately when you are done." She said , with disbelief coating her voice, she was angry beyond her expectation.

" I'm sorry." Mark replied softly. He just ran in to get something, little did he know that he would come back to meet a mess. Why was the universe working against him? Try as he might to be useful, he ended up being useless. At least, that was what his wife was about to say.

" Dont tell me you are sorry, it's a copout.you know what you are supposed to do. For goodness sake you are not a child, do you enjoy the way I shout at you all the time? I mean an adult should know when to do things and when not to. Now, if I talk you will make me look like a bad person when you know what you did. Is there anything you want to tell me? What other excuse?" She thundered, her voice rising by the minute.

Mark bowed his head in shame and she wiggled her finger before him, " Don't even try that, I promise you, I won't forgive you if you make me seem like a bad person. Here I am, sticking my neck out just to make sure that you are safe, well fed and you're wasting my strength, you know how much we pay for water bills yet I've never complained." She said.

The front door opened and Mark groaned in tiredness, wow, he had entered a great problem because this woman was not going to leave him alone. Instead she would fuel the issue and he didn't think that her daughter would help him.

"I'm sorry, see your mom is already approaching. Do you enjoy tormenting me? Making your mother ridicule me because of my present state?" He asked her in a soft tone. " I believe that we should sort our issues out without a third party, you know?" He suggested. He was also a human and there was a little he could take before he broke.

" Okay, so this is the game you want to play? Making me look like a bad person when in fact, you are the one who decides to do things that would make people rain abuses on you." She fired at him hotly, then took in a deep breath.

" Well, I have nothing to say to you, except have a nice life."

" Lacey, wait , we can sort things out. Just wait a bit." He made the mistake of letting the mouth of the sprinkler go and Mrs. Richard threw her hands in the air.

"You will clean the whole lawn, since you have decided to be stupid, I'll not allow you to ruin my lawn for me." She said.
