If there was any way that Mark could have washed away the shame he felt, he would have done so, but as it stood, he couldn't do anything. He grimaced about what he was about to do that right now.
" I took a cab here, can you please help me with some dollars to pay him?"
Mrs. Richard scoffed loudly in disgust then clapped her hands in anger, " He doesn't even have money to pay for the cab." She said, with her lips curled in distaste.
" Don't speak to him in that manner" Mr. Richard replied and pulled out his wallet from his trousers, he handed some dollar bills over to Mark and made sure that he didn't have to endure that insult anymore.
" Take this and go." He said and Mark smiled gratefully as he rushed back outside.
"Thank you, very much!" He called when he got outside.
" Such a clumsy fool." Mrs. Richard said.
All the while, Lacey was not happy with the way her mother was raining abuses on her husband but she didn't want the matter to become prolonged. " I'll tell you what, Mom. I'll be divorcing him, just bear till the process is over, I'll be so glad if you can do that for me." She said
" Oh,why can't you just kick him out of the house?" Her mother suggested.
" Stacey!" Mr. Richard exclaimed, she was doing too much, how did he not notice that he was married to a materialistic woman who didn't care about anything but herself. It was annoying that she did all those things.
" I won't have you speaking to the poor man as if he's beneath you. I'll let you know that you are in the same position as he is." He said.
"Don't even compare me with that miser
of a guy. I'll never be compared to him, never will" She said, angrily.
Mark walked in surprised to see that they were still talking about the issue,he smiled gently. " I don't want to be the reason your marriage crashes." He said and Mrs.Richard gave him a blazing look.
" So bold of you to think that you are the reason that our marriages will crash. Has that been your intention all along? To make our marriage crash? I promise you that you'll be highly disappointed." She fired at him, " Get out of my sight thou insolent sapien. I don't know the reason for your existence."
"Stacey!"
She swiveled and went into her room, tired of talking to dimwitted people who didn't understand the gravity of what they were doing. They made her daughter who had a promising future go through disgrace and shame everywhere and they were telling her to calm down. All she wanted was for her daughter to make up her mind, and she was grateful that her wish was gradually coming to pass.
Then, she would connect her with some of her friend's sons who were of marriageable age and most importantly rich, she wouldn't allow her daughter to fall into the hands of another miser like this one she was unfortunate to meet.
" I'll be in my room." Mark replied quietly as he tried to escape to his room.
" I didn't remember to tell you that you won't also have access to the room, so you better stay in the guest room or anything that works for you." Lacey interrupted him, making him halt in his steps.
Really? She was chasing him out of his room. That was their only sacred place, why was she chasing him out of the room? " Why?"
She stared at him as if he was senseless, " because we are soon going to be divorced? What other reason is there?"
" But we aren't. What makes you think that it would work out?" He asked her, she was already quick to jump into conclusions which were very hurtful to him.
" I know,I can already sense it, believe me when I say it's just a matter of time."
"Then you should allow us to live together in every sense of the word before drawing the curtain close." He asked with hurt shining in his eyes at the thought of rejection.
"This is my father's house, which I am the heir to and you want to tell me how to run it?" She asked him, surprised that he even had the guts to tell her that he didn't want to leave.
Mark saw that she had begun to get angry, so he sighed and decided to walk away, which would mean him being a better person. " It's okay, I'll move to the next room, thank you." He said and walked away.
Lacey felt a pang of guilt in her heart as her husband walked away and she stared at him longingly.
If only you could be more productive, have a decent job and become the man in the relationship she would be happy. She was tired of carrying the burden of feeding the home without any support. If he was more useful no one would have to look down on him and she would be very proud to showcase him to the world.
" You shouldn't join your mother in doing the things she does, we know that she can be mean when she wants to but that is no license for bad behavior." Mr. Richard advised.
" Yes, dad." She replied and smiled at him, her stance didn't change concerning the divorce but she guessed relegation wasn't the answer either.
" Your mom is a whirlwind, she doesn't care whose ox is gored as long as she has her way. I'll advise that you don't tow that path because it can be dangerous." Her father continued.
" Quit pitting my child against me, if you so want him to be a better version of himself, get him a decent job, until then he will not escape my wrath and she knows this." Mrs. Richard's voice boomed from the top of the stairs and both father and daughter rolled their eyes at their common tyrant.
