Chapter 58 Kissed on the Dancefloor

Chapter 58 Kissed on the Dancefloor

Laura's POV:

“So where's Ryan. I was hoping to see him here.” Jim asked, staring at me.

“I'm not sure myself, he was supposed to be here with Jenna.”

“Talking about that, how are things with he and Jenna. That punk doesn't tell me but I know something's going on.”

I chuckled. “I don't know. He still hasn't had the balls yet.”

“Is Ryan in love with Jenna?” Gwen asked.

I glanced at her with pity, she was in for so many surprises today.

“That's old news already. He'd been chasing her since sixth grade as far as I'm concerned.” Jim replied. “Come on, let's get a seat somewhere.”

And so he lead us towards the row of tables and that was when we stumbled on Reene.

“Hello, Laura.” She broke in to her usual smile.

“Oh, Reene. Hi, how are you?” I smiled back at her, taking a seat beside Gwen. She was looking stunning as ever in her red gown. Infact, every one I saw today was stunning in one way or the other.

“I'm fine. Hi.” She nodded at Gwen and Jim.

I took the cue immediately and did the introductions. “So guys, this is Reene or should I call her Secretary Reene.”I introduced her to the duo.

“She's the record boss's secretary and that makes her my boss.” I avoided calling out his name.

Jim held out a hand. “Hello Reene, you're much more lovable in person than Ryan describes.” He said with a smile.

She shook his hands. “Thank you. Although I'm curious to know what Ryan has been telling you about me.”

“Alot of things anyway. I'm Hecter. Jim Hecter.”

Reene's eyes widened as Gwen's had done just moments ago. “You mean the lyrical maverick?”

He chuckled. “You must be a big fan of the Times, I see.”

She nodded. “I used to listen to your music with my mama back in the day.”

He gave her a warm smile and withdrew his hands. “If you're still interested, I'll have Ryan send you a box of my old tapes then.”

“Oh no!” That was a joke.

Jim burst in to an incredulous laughter and sank back in to his seat.

I picked up the introductions again. “And this is my best friend, Gwen.”

Gwen gave her a friendly smile, but didn't bring out her hand for a handshake. And Reene left it like that, she sat down beside us and soon fell in to a long conversation with Jim.
A waiter brought a tray of cocktails to our table and we both picked one. While listening to Jim tell a funny story about Ryan, something he did some time back when he was still so much a kid.

Reene was also surprised when she found out too, that Jim was Ryan's Dad.

We laughed at the right jokes and chipped in bits of conversation where we thought was appropriate. But apart from that, Jim was quite the talker.

I half listened while glancing around to spot Jaxon or something like that, which I knew was so impossible since almost everyone had a mask on.

But what about him anyway.

My phone chimed suddenly in my purse, I dropped my drinking glass and reached to fetch it out.

I unlocked my phone to see a message from no other than Williams. Why was he texting me?

We exchanged contacts like few weeks back. Why was he texting me now anyway.

I clicked the message icon and stared at the message with surprise.

“Hi Laura, I heard about the Masquerade ball night, I figured since I had some free time and you'd be there, I could also drop by as well. Do you care for a chat? I'm two tables away from you.”

What the hell?

I lifted my head up and my eyes locked with his. He smiled and waved at me.

I tried to smile back before turning on Gwen and whispering fiercely. “What did you do?”

“What?” She feigned ignorance. But I knew Williams showing up here tonight had a lot to do with her. It was definitely her doing. She had been trying so hard to matchmake us.

“What's he doing here?” I hissed.

“Who?”

“Williams!”

“Oh.” She sighed and sipped her cocktail— I knew it was her.

“I thought you needed some company for the night, since you were coming alone and didn't invite anyone. I figured I could lend a hand.”

“I'm so grateful.” I spat at her in deep sarcasm.

She rolled her eyes. “Of course you should. Don't mention, what are friends for.”

I ignored her and stood up from the chair, Reene and Jim who had been two engrossed in their conversation looked up at me.

“Excuse me please.” I smiled at them. “I'll be back shortly.”

Jim nodded. “Sure, Go right on dear.”

I strolled from the table and walked gracefully towards Williams, who stood up to meet me halfway wearing his usual forever warm smile.

“Hi.” I beamed at him.

“Hello dear.” His voice was light and airy.

He drew closer to me and as he was just inches away, the light in the hall snapped off immediately.

What the hell?

I looked around with a frown.

Williams held out his hand for me to take. “It's time for the couples dance, do you mind if we did this again.”

Was this a trap?

But I walked right in to it anyway, since it was orchestrated by my best friend. “Yes, please.”

Soft music soon filled the entire hall, looming through the speakers. The noise and chatter died down and couples rose slowly to the dance floor in pairs.

Williams led me there too, like we were a couple.

My heart was racing fiercely, the last time I had a dance with Williams, I was drunk and woke up the next day in Jaxon's house. Not knowing how I got there until later.

I hadn't still forgotten the memory and remembered well, that I kissed him too that night and that was when all this started.

We turned to face each other, he held one of my hands and snaked his other hand round my waist, while I placed mine on his chest— our eyes locked in to each other.

“So Williams.” I began, as we fell in step to the rhythm of the music. He groaned a reply.

“What do you want from me?”

All men always wanted something. All men!

“Nothing, Just you.” He said softly, we took a step closer to each other.

“What do you want with me?”

“Your heart.”

I chuckled. “You can't have that.”

No man could.

“I know that's why I want it.”

I frowned, arching my brow at him. “You're a strange man. You've been silently stalking me all this while.”

He shook his head. “I was not really stalking you.”

He pulled me closer, my breast brushed against his chest. I pulled back creating space between us.

“I just had some opportunities and chanced encounters that's all.” He said chuckling.

“Chanced or planned?”

“Call it whatever you want.” He said softly, leaning his face towards me.

The lights blazed back on, the music stopped abruptly. I broke free from him and stepped back.

“I'm sorry Williams, you're a nice guy and all. But I don't really want you. I hope you understand.”

He stared at me sadly. “I know you don't, but he does?

What was he saying?

“Who is he? Who are you talking about?”

He nodded at someone behind me and I wheeled around immediately only to hit something hard and solid. Again!

Something soft bent over me, claiming my lips. Someone was kissing me.

And I knew who it was. But I let him kiss me anyway.
