Chapter 49 Keeping Safe
Chapter 49 Keeping Safe
Laura's POV:
“What!” Brian flared up. “You've been hanging out with Jaxon?”
“That's not how it is.” I said in defense.
He stared at me suspiciously, his eyes narrowed in to slits. “How is it then?”
“He has been pestering me for a while now, I only did that because I had no other choice.”
“And why didn't you tell me any of this?” He shot back, standing to his feet. I frowned.
“I couldn't tell you.”
“What, why?” He took a step closer to where I sat. I looked at Gwen for help, but her face was as white as paper. I couldn't make out if she was scared or just worried.
I sighed softly and turned back to Brian. “I couldn't tell you because you'd flare up like this and ruin everything.”
He halted in his tracks, his eyes scrutinizingly narrowed. “What do you mean by that, Laura?”
“I am only saying if I told you, you'd go off and do something crazy before I knew.” I said, my face getting hot.
Brian glared at Gwen, who looked like she could vanish on the spot at his gaze. “I guess you're also in on this, Gwen?”
He was asking, his tone was cold and accusing.
“Yes, I do.”
“Good, good!” He chuckled, his eyes sauntering back to me, “so I guess this is an all girls party then?”
I flinched at the anger in his voice. I didn't mean to keep him in the dark. But letting Brian in on my plans of getting close to Jaxon was a total disaster. He'd ruin everything! Everything.
I bit my lips, and stared nervously at the glass topped table across us. Not daring to look him in the face.
“Good, good. If you think I don't need to know that's alright.” He said painfully, with a small sigh at the end. His eyes hovered over us for a minute, before he turned on his heels and sauntered out of the living room.
I lay back in to the couch and dragged in a long breath. I knew I was doing the right thing or I thought I was, anyway. But I couldn't stand having Brian look at me like that. It just didn't feel right.
Gwen cleared her throat to distract me from my many thoughts. My eyelids fluttered up, and turned to give her a look.
“Don't you think he deserves to know what's going on at least?” She said softly.
Her eyes looked worried, too worried. Matching my heavy heart just fine.
“No.” I shook my head firmly. “It's best if we don't tell him anything.”
She sighed before poising another question. “About Jaxon, I don't think he'd be bothering you anytime soon with what's going on now.”
“mmhm.” I grunted, shooting a look at the TV, were a newscaster was saying something inaudible, since I had turned down the volume earlier on.
“I don't know.” I said softly. Although I pray he does though, and also that he wouldn't.
If he did that would make me ditch my plans. But if he didn't I'd still have my chance. It was a win-win for me anyway. Whatever outcome this whole thing took.
“The media has shifted to him, I think that's distracting enough. It's a good turn out, at least you can now breath in peace.”
Peace wasn't a conventional word here. People like me could never find that. Never.
I hadn't told Gwen that he had given me three missed calls this morning already, it was best if she didn't know anyway.
My phone buzzed from the table top, I picked it up with a heavy heart as I saw Ryan's name on the screen.
Had anything happened again?
Gwen shot me a questioning look.
“It's Ryan.” I mouthed cupping the phone to my ear. Her eyes did a small flip to her phone on the table. If she had looked any worried earlier, she was simply terrified now. She reached for her phone, hesitantly.
“Hello, Ryan.”
“Hi, Laura. Are you at home?”
My eyes narrowed. “Yes, what's wrong?”
“Great, can you turn on your TV?”
My heartbeat increased. “My TV is on and I'm staring right in front of it— any problem?”
Gwen gasped from beside me. I eyed her suspiciously. “What's going on Ryan?”
“Jaxon just finished a press conference now.”
“What?”
Why would he do a press conference?
“He's all over the media as we speak. Jenna reckons this is a good one for us..”
My heart was racing so fast, I could barely make out what he was saying.
Jaxon did a press conference for me? Unbelievable!
I stood up from the couch and made for the TV stand where I picked up the remote and switched channels.
“Are you still there, Laura.”
“Yes, I'm here.”
“Okay, we just finished talks with the producers and it's safe to record today.”
My stomach did a small flip, as my fingers paused on the remote control.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, everything has been sorted out— I'll come to pick you up when I'm done here.”
Geez!
“Thank you, Ryan.”
My mind was whirling with different thoughts as I skimmed through the news channels, Jaxon went live? What did he say that changed everything?
Christ, what did he say?
The rest of Ryan's words were lost on me as I was deeply engrossed in my thoughts. I was only aware of the line clicking dead.
Jaxon's familiar face was staring out at me from the TV screen. Gwen walked close to me, as I rolled up the volume knob.
Jaxon's voice boomed through the home theater filling the whole room up.
“..I would love to inform the public, that none of this twisted stories are true. Rather they are propagandas from some biased set of individuals, in an attempt to ruin my image and credibility. I urge the public to cease abd desist from spreading this misinformation. All media outlets are further advised to take down any of such rumors. Defaulters would have to face legal penalties—”He paused, I held my breath. Gwen lean over my shoulder.
Flashlights fell on his face before picked up his next words. “Any further attempts to drag my Artist, Vixen into any more propagandas would attract legal consequences. I advise everyone to take note of this, thank you.” He ended his speech and the anchoring reporters face resurfaced on the screen.
I turned around,Gwen was looking at me with the same indiscruptible expression I had on my face.
“What the hell was that!” She exclaimed softly, before I could.
I shook my head. “Jaxon is crazy.”
Why was he vouching for me or was he protecting me? Why?
This whole thing didn't make any sense to me.
“Don't overthink it Laura,”Gwen said softly. “I think he's crazy too.”
We walked back to the couch and slumped on the seat, each of us lost in our own different thoughts. My stomach was whirling and doing strange back flips.
This was the first time someone who wasn't Gwen or Brian was standing up for me. But how could that some one be Jaxon of all people.
Gwen sighed beside me.
“So what are you going to do now?” She asked staring at me.
I blinked. “Huh?”
“What are you going to do about Jaxon Fallon?” She repeated
