CHAPTER NINETEEN: The Real Truth

CHAPTER NINETEEN: The Real Truth

ELENA'S POV

I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched as soon as I stepped out of the hotel. I looked around but there was no one around. Was it my imagination? Or was it Lucas's ghost guiding me to the truth?

A soft chuckle escaped my lips at my wild imagination as I boarded a cab that took me to the estate where Lucas used to live. The driver refused to go beyond the entrance so I highlighted and walked inside the estate alone.

The streets were empty, almost like it was haunted and a shiver ran down my spine. I glanced at the picture of Lucas' house on my phone and when I glanced up, the house was just a few steps away from me.

“Here goes nothing,” I said softly as I took a deep breath and walked towards the house. I slowly pushed the gates open and the sound it made creeped me out to the core.

What in the horror movie is this?

I walked into the house and I could swear that if a pin dropped on the floor, I'd hear it loud and clear. It was so damn quiet. Luckily, it was already daytime, so there was nothing to be scared about.

Pushing the front door open, I walked inside the house and the decorations were astonishing. Everything was covered with a transparent cloth but it was still a sight to behold. Lucas must have loved artifacts when he was alive.

The paintings on the wall did nothing but add to the beauty and I found myself drawn to whoever Lucas was. He seemed to have a pure soul… why would he be killed in such a brutal manner?

“Stay focused, Elena.” I reminded myself of the reason I came here, and I immediately got to work. I started to search around the house for any clues, but I couldn't find anything except paintings and antique jewelry.

I moved upstairs and the first room immediately caught my attention. I tried pushing it open but it didn't budge, causing my brows to furrow in surprise.

What was hidden in there?

I decided to find the key, maybe it could hold evidence of what I needed to find. I moved to the second room and the door pushed open as I walked in.

I pushed open the curtains and light immediately filled the room, causing me to let out a gasp of awe. This must be his room. I started to search around the room, checking every drawer for any clue that could lead me to the truth. Most of the drawers were empty so I assumed that people must have come here after his death.

If that was the case, then I might not get any evidence… I let out a frustrated groan at the thought as I sat on the bed. I felt myself immediately dip down the moment my body touched the bed and I frowned as I stood up.

I immediately raised the bed up and to my surprise, there was an empty space underneath it. I raised it higher and my eyes caught sight of a wooden box tucked at the near end of the bed. I reached for it, and when I opened it, there was a keyholder, and a name was embroidered on it: Charlotte.

Charlotte?

There was a key attached to the keyholder and I remembered the first door that I had tried to open but couldn't. Could this be the key to the door?

I immediately rushed out of the room and inserted the key into the keyhole, my heart racing in my chest as I turned the key. The door clicked open and my heart soared as I pushed the door open.

It was like a secret room and since no one knew where the key was, it was left unlocked. I coughed as I walked in, the dust in the room making it hard to breathe and I immediately pulled the window open so that air could come in.

I was finally able to breathe as I glanced around and my eyes widened when I realized that it was a library with lots of books. It seemed like he loved to read a lot. Lucas' case was beginning to get more interesting and I was determined to find out the truth so that he could rest in peace.

I started to look through the bookshelves, and I was filled with astonishment as I walked across the room. I walked over to the end of the room and my eyes caught sight of what looked like a treasure box.

I picked it up and blew the dust off it, the action causing me to cough loudly as I inhaled a bit of the dust. I pulled the box, and inside of it were lots and lots of handwritten letters.

How was this possible? He was so old school… exactly my type of man…

I shook my head to get rid of the thought as I took out the letters and placed them on a table. Underneath the letters was a memory card safely tucked at the side. I took it out as well and placed it on my phone before turning my attention to the letters.

I opened the first letter and it was written by Lucas himself. He was expressing his love for the receiver of the letter and how much he missed her. At the end of the letter was a name that made my eyes widen in shock. Charlotte Carter.

Lucas was in love with Charlotte?

I hurriedly read the next letter and it felt like a blow to my chest when I realized that it was Charlotte's reply, expressing how much she loved him and missed him as well.

I skimmed through the rest of the letters and from Lucas' end, it was obvious that he was madly in love with Charlotte. He was ready to leave everything, his wealth, company, and everything he had just to elope with her to another country where they'd get married. However, the last letter sent by Charlotte must have broken him badly.

Charlotte revealed that she was in love with someone else and that her heart was with him so she broke up with him.

I suddenly realized that the time dated on the letters was the time when Adrian and I were still dating. Which meant only one thing…
