Chapter Seventy-seven

Chapter Seventy-seven
Sitting on the bench, Harry and I had been waiting for the kidnapper to call again. We had debated whether we should tell the police about it but thought it better to prioritize our son's safety. No cops, no problem, as what he said.
"It's getting dark already. I think we should go home?" I'm about to stand up, but Harry grabbed my wrist and pulled me down.
"I'm sorry, Georgia. I'm such an irresponsible father to our son," he said, looking into my eyes.
"Don't say that, Harry. You're not irresponsible. It's not your fault that our son was taken away. I'm the one to blame; if only I had told you sooner, it wouldn't have happened," I said regretfully.
"Come here." He wrapped his arms around me, providing me a little comfort. "I don't want to drag you into this, Georgia. It's very dangerous. So please go home and stay there. Let me take care of this."
"There you go again. Always doing things on your own. I understand that you're worried about me, but Kaya—"
"Just trust me, Georgia. I'll get him back. What's more important is that you're safe. I won't be able to take it if something wrong happened with you too. So don't be stubborn, okay?"
Harry's really playing the role of an overprotective husband right now and I understand where he's coming from.
"If that's what you really want then, I think I should go home. But please promise me you'll come back with our son," I said.
"I promise." He kissed my forehead before letting me go. "Now go home. Don't forget to text me once you get there. Lock all the doors and windows until we come back."
I did as Harry said. I went home alone, hoping and praying that everything will be alright, that those people won't hurt Kaya. When I arrived home, I locked all the windows and closed the doors before going to the kitchen. I should cook something for dinner. Harry and our little boy would surely be hungry when they're back.
When the food was cooked, I went to the living room and sat on the couch. The silence was so loud that I could hear the ticking of the clock and the beating of my own heart. It felt uncomfortable, especially that loneliness. It cuts so deep. I don't know how I'd survive if my husband and little boy were also to be taken away from me like everything else.
I waited for them in silence. It's already midnight and I'm still awake. I've been feeling anxious, sitting and standing, pacing back and forth, and fidgeting. I've never spent this much long without them and I started thinking: what if they aren't coming back? What if something happened to them? What should I do?
I knew it was a bad idea to let Harry go there alone. I should have accompanied him. But here I am, doing nothing except worrying. I sat down the couch and pressed the bridge of my nose. Suddenly, amidst the silence of the night, I heard a knocking from the door. I leaped to my feet and ran to open it.
A female police officer stood at the staircase with a serious expression on her face. "Mrs. Wills?" she asked.
"Yup," I replied, confused why there's a police here.
"Your husband and son are dead," she said.
"Dead what?" For a moment, I couldn't think of anything, then I screamed, "No! Tell me you're lying. They aren't dead yet. They aren't..."
"I'm so sorry Mrs. Will, but our team found your husband and son's bodies in the alley. Please come with us, we have turned them to the morgue," the policewoman said.
I felt like my world shattered in one second after the woman said those words. Those kidnappers... They must be the ones who did this. My husband and little boy are dead. I can't believe it. They were just fine yesterday. I remembered what Harry promised me. He'll come back with Kaya. So why? Why would they die like this? Why does god takes everyone from me? Tears fell down my eyes I think about it.
I went to the morgue with the policewoman. Heavy thoughts raced in my head as we drove in the almost-empty city street. I couldn't describe the sadness and anger that I felt. That kind of sadness that you wish you just die with them, that you find no reason to live, that life suddenly became meaningless. Cause when I thought I finally made my own family, they are taken away again.
Why is the universe so cruel to me? Why can't it at least let me be happy? Why are there so many people who rob others' happiness? And what's the purpose of all these sufferings? I got so many questions in my head and they are drowning me.
A few moments later, the police car stopped in front of the morgue. We stepped out and entered there. We approached the two bodies covered with shrouds. My heart is pounding in my chest like a machine. I don't know if I can do this.
"Please take a deep breath, Mrs. Wills," the policewoman said.
I took a deep breath and she asked me if I was ready, so I nodded and she pulled back the coverings which revealed the corpse of my husband and little boy. They both looked like just sleeping. I thought I was ready, but still, seeing them like this feels like my heart was being slice by a knife. The pain was so strong I touched my chest and fell to my knees.
I cried loudly. This is too much for me to handle. Losing the man I love and our child is way more painful than losing my siblings and parents. It's like the pain had accumulated in my heart and wanted to explode. Too profound to be translated into words.
I wish I just died too. How useless I was. I haven't done anything to save them. All I did was sit. Perhaps... Perhaps if I went with Harry, we could have save our little child. He's just a baby. He haven't even got to see the real world yet, but he's gone, and I'm all alone again.
