Chapter 83 The Undercover Agent {9}
I was a little too late to press the button beneath the desk. Quickly, I crouched down beneath the desk, heard Bruno walk into Alexandro's office while muttering something to himself.
"No one is in here," someone was saying to him from the open door.
Maybe, that could be Ramsey but this particular voice sounded different, deep and heavy with a southern accent. It could be any other person amongst Alexandro's men. Hoping it wasn't what I was thinking, I held my breath, praying no one moved close to the fall-front desk where I was hiding.
"I could have sworn that they were both here. He was right here with Suarez... You should have stabbed Suarez when you had the chance instead, that dude just gets on my nerves, I needed him out of the way..," Bruno put in.
My hands curled into balls of fury. I finally got half of my answers, Bruno was talking to the person who had actually tried to kill me. And who could that killer be?
Bruno could possibly be the reason why Alexandro had been shot.
"Let's leave. Boss could be in his room. Let's give it another time," Bruno motioned and the door was shut behind them.
My legs refused to move and when they did move, I returned to Alexandro's side, shivering as the memory of how I had almost been killed played in my head.
What if Bruno knew about Alexandro's atrocities in the time past and he was only playing dumb to all of this, then would he strike when he felt the time was right?
Both Alexandro and I had almost been killed. I reminded myself how much I needed to leave this whole brouhaha behind. I was almost close to having my assignment completed and leaving this shithole.
But here I was stranded against my wish as fate was playing a cruel act on me. How would I get across to Damian or to Maurice?
This was truly messed up. Maybe, I should send an encrypted message to my sister, Jolene. Oftentimes, she had visited me while I lived with Marcus, she'd known about some couple of emergency codes due to her insistent questions.
My eyes scanned the room and I walked towards the telephone which was situated in the corner of where Alexandro slept. Her number went through voicemail and I sent the encrypted code instead. I hopefully believed she would come through for me.
I found myself leaving Alexandro back to my room. When I was sure my room was secured, I fell into my bed - spent and tired down to my bones.
I was up before the sun rose and what met my eyes had me looking around my room. A packaged box was placed beside my bed, had I overlook that when I had walked into my room?
I unboxed and scoffed to myself when my hands brought to my face the fake chest disguise.
More disguises? Had Maurice gotten my message from Jolene? This wasn't what I needed? I needed to get out of here.
I probably wasn't thinking about how Maurice had gotten my message so quickly. I was particularly more engrossed in the aspect of "getting out".
A piece of paper was nestled in the corner of the box, I picked it up and turned it over:
"I advise you to wear this." It read.
Was this some kind of joke? I was already comfortable in my chest binder beneath my shirt, why should I need this?
I decided to wear it anyway, if this was a way Maurice would get me out of here - he had better be quick about it.
As soon as I was done wearing the disguise, someone was knocking on my door.
"Boss wants you present," Bruno was standing at the entrance with a gruff expression on his face.
My stomach twisted when I recalled how I had almost died. Maybe, if I could expose the revelation of Bruno trying to kill me to Alexandro, Bruno wouldn't be all too brazen to walk himself to my door.
The sight of him gnawed at me. "I need to....,"
"Now," Bruno interrupted, holding my door to stop me from closing it.
My brows furrowed. What could be so important that Alexandro was up and about amidst his men? Was he ready to bring Bruno to book and was it necessary that I must be involved?
"After you then," I smiled, careful not to play the fool's game of walking in front of him.
Bruno bowed slightly when we arrived before Alexandro then he stepped aside while I stood before Alexandro in the centre of the spacious room. One look at Alexandro's face and one wouldn't be able to detect the fact that he had been shot the previous night.
The rest of Alexandro's men surrounded the room. My eyes briefly scanned the room until they fell on Damian and Marcus.
My breath caught in my throat as my steps faltered. What was Damian doing here? And why was he smiling broadly at Marcus?
This was all wrong. This was totally insane. My hands began to sweat, how was I going to escape this?
Alexandro sat in his favourite armchair while he turned to Bruno to lit his cigar.
"Long time, no see," Marcus sneered at me.
I ignored him while I awaited whatever question that would be thrown my way.
"Do you remember Marcus?" Alexandro puffed a smoke as he cocked one of his brows.
"Yes, I do remember his face quite clearly. He was our supplier some time ago of which Ramsey and I had picked. I could call Ramsey to verify if you need me to," I parted my legs slightly, acting like the man that I was.
"Ramsey is not present as of this moment. And do you know this other fellow?" Alexandro pointed at Damian.
I snapped my head to Damian, who was grinning at me while shaking his crossed leg vigorously.
If only I'd known how spiteful Damian was? He had betrayed the agency, for what? And how long has he been communicating with Marcus? This was totally absurd.
"I have no idea who he is," I answered Alexandro calmly to which Marcus bursted out laughing.
"You saw that? I'm enjoying every bit of this," Marcus said.
"I would crave for some intense quietness," Alexandro's tone was harsh, silencing Marcus to a fault.
Alexandro jerked his eyes towards me. "These men brought to my notice that you've been having some secret deals with the Dante's behind my back. Selling some of our supplies to the Dante as you're a woman spy for them as well. You should know those are offenses I would never take lightly." He rose to his feet as he walked towards me.
Lies.
They were telling lies while obviously trying to conceal the main truth. Why were they doing this?
My heart began to plummet, beating harder than ever as Alexandro never took his eyes off me.
"How could I ever be a woman? Wouldn't I be identified easily? You know I would never betray you, boss," I loved the fact that my voice didn't shake in any possible way, thereby giving up my disguise of being who I really was.
I would deny ever being a betrayal and a woman even if hell broke loose.
"Take off your shirt, Suarez."
