Chapter 472 I Want to Study Abroad

James clenched his fist and swung it hard at Charles' face.

"Why can't you just talk straight? If you can't, I'll teach you how to!" James said, raising his fist to strike again

Charles didn't resist. He just wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, looked at the blood on his fingers, and laughed. "You wanna know what I have to say, Mr. Smith? Fine. But you gotta let my shipment go."

James frowned deeply.

Andrew stepped forward. "Mr. Smith, we can handle this ourselves. I can also send someone to protect Ms. Johnson. We don't need to waste time with this nutjob."

Charles laughed. "Fine, I'm outta here."

With that, Charles turned and walked away.

James' face grew darker.

He had a nagging feeling that something was slipping out of his control.

What exactly, he wasn't sure yet.

But from Charles' behavior, it seemed to be related to Emily.

And whatever it was, it would make him deeply regretful.

That night, Skylight City was hit by a storm.

The wind and rain raged all night.

Emily lay in bed, clutching the blanket tightly, dreaming.

She dreamt of the earthquake five years ago.

At that time, she and James were trapped under the rubble. No matter how much she called out or struggled, she couldn't find a way to survive.

Eventually, through sheer determination, she found a way out.

She thought that after surviving such a disaster together, she and James would be closer.

But they had only grown further apart.

Emily was haunted by this dream all night.

In the morning, she was awakened by her phone ringing.

Emily groggily answered, "Hello?"

"Dr. Johnson, are you okay? You're supposed to be on the day shift today. Why aren't you here yet?"

Emily was jolted awake. She quickly checked the time and saw it was already 9:30 AM.

Emily was silent.

She got dressed and ready as fast as she could and rushed to the hospital.

After a busy morning, Scarlett came over to greet her. "Dr. Johnson, did you hear? The new deputy director is about to be decided."

"Really?" Emily replied calmly. "It should be Dr. Martin, right?"

Emily couldn't think of anyone more suitable than Lily.

"No," Scarlett shook her head. "You don't know? The new deputy director is you."

Scarlett lowered her voice. "I heard it was supposed to be Dr. Martin, but Tyler thinks you have more potential and recommended you for the position."

Emily was silent.

With her recent divorce, Emily felt exhausted and had been considering resigning to take a break.

But since her grandfather had encouraged her to join Willowbrook General Hospital, she was hesitant. Hearing Scarlett's words, Emily realized it was time to leave.

She didn't blame Tyler.

She knew Tyler's intention was to keep her at the hospital, working and helping more patients. But she felt she lacked the experience.

Being suddenly promoted to deputy director would not only upset Lily but also other colleagues and some patients.

She was too young.

Her skills were good, but in the medical field, experience was crucial.

She couldn't handle such a heavy responsibility.

Emily's resignation letter quickly landed on Ella's desk.

Ella was puzzled. "You want to resign? You..."

"Dr. Garcia, I've thought this through. And lately, I haven't been myself. I was even late today. I think I need a break."

Ella didn't say anything more.

When Lily heard about Emily's resignation, she approached her. "Emmy, I heard you're resigning? Is it because of me?"

She had heard some rumors about the deputy director position.

Lily admitted she felt uncomfortable when she heard those rumors and even started to doubt Emily. But when she heard about Emily's resignation, all those thoughts vanished, leaving only one question: Why was Emily resigning?

Emily smiled. "Of course not. I've just been feeling tired lately and want to take a break."

Lily said a few more things, hoping Emily would stay, but Emily was firm, and Lily couldn't say much more.

Emily's resignation news quickly reached her family.

The Johnson family had mixed reactions.

Aiden, though not entirely supportive of Emily's decision, didn't show his displeasure. Instead, he asked, "Emmy, do you have any plans?"

"You know me best." Emily smiled, hugging Aiden's arm. "Grandpa, I want to go abroad for further studies."
