Chapter 93 A Figure In The Distance
Chapter 93 A Figure In The Distance
“Huh? How did you know she's my lover?” Finley asked.
“I study human psychology in school and during my free time, I get to work with a lot of great minds. Your body has subconsciously wired itself to protect her at all costs.” She said pointing at Nicole.
Huh… School?
“The first time I aimed my shot at her was a pure coincidence but you managed to deflect the blow with astonishing speed and the second time was mostly to understand why anyone would do such a thing and so I aimed my sword at her and you still managed to deflect it. I must say I am impressed”
She did sound impressed though.
“It was not a real gun by the way but you didn't know that, you still put yourself in harm's way to protect someone you loved… although my first shot might have not been a real gun, it's a new model the Jews are working on right now, it's called a G3-arcane prototype excurliber, It weighs about 10 pounds per round and moves at the speed of sound, much slower than an actual gun, but it sure packs a punch.” She cocked her head to the side comically.
“Any ordinary human would have been knocked unconscious, whereas you took a shot to the back of your wrist and another to the front, which must hurt a lot, I'm surprised you can still wave that hand around, though I'm guessing you're putting on that bravado cos you wouldn't want your lover to worry”
Finley sighed. “And you just went on and opened your big mouth”
“Seriously?” Nicole said, walking towards Finley, “let me see it”
“It's fine babe, it rea-” his words were cut short as he stared into her tear filled eyes.
He tentatively showed her his wrist, she pulled back his gloves.
Damn… it was bad.
One look at it and Nicole closed her eyes briefly.
The surrounding area was swollen and already turning purple.
“You stupid asshole” she whispered, voice shaky.
Finley's finger curled under her chin, raising her head up as droplets of tears fell down her face.
“You know I don't like it when you cry” he murmured, wiping the tears off her cheeks, they just kept on falling without restraint.
“And you think I like it when you act foolishly” Nicole said, quietly.
He chuckled lightly. “It can't be helped now can it? And besides you and Agnes need to go seeing as we have a match to begin”
“I'll stay in pla-”
He placed a finger on her lips tentatively. “I'd rather die,” he said, eyes hard.
“But you can't fight like this,” Nicole pressed.
“Really?” He asked with an eyebrow raised. “I beat you childhood crush while I was momentarily blind, you really think I can't do this with one good hand?”
Nicole stared at him, lips parted in annoyance, ready to say something but for some reason she couldn't find the words.
“Be rest assured your lover is perfectly capable of taking care of himself Miss” Josiah said, staring at Nicole.
Nicole's gaze snapped towards Josiah, eyes burning with anger, then she turned her gaze back to Finley then palmed his cheeks softly.
“Don't die on me asshole” she said, staring at him intently.
He grinned widely. “The moment I do, someone else would be striving to take you away and I'd rather die than let that happen”
Nicole shook her head smiling then walked up to me. “Come on Aggy” she said, wrapping her fingers around my wrist.
“I do hope you fare better with any other Jew you meet, I am the way I am because of my captain. Most Jews aren't like I am, and they most likely won't bother to indulge you in a conversation” she paused for a moment.
“May I ask what your names are?”
We stared at each other, then back at Josiah.
“It's only a matter of courtesy, if you do not wish to tell me your names, it is quite alri-”
“Finley,” Finley said, cutting her off. “it's only proper to exchange names if you've acknowledged your opponent to be worthy of it. That's the third rule of the Asujis, to bridge a form of respect”
“You're from the Asuji clan?” Josiah asked, surprised.
“Used to be,” he replied.
“Marco”
“Nicole”
They all stared at me and I stared back in confusion. Was there a need for me to say my name? After all, I wasn't part of the aforementioned acknowledged warriors.
“What about you?” Josiah asked.
“Agnes…” I murmured.
“I apologize about calling you weak earlier, it's just my poor judge of character”
I scoffed lightly. “You don't need to change the words when fact remains the same”
“Fact can also change through hard work and sheer determination, I can already see it in your eyes”
She turned to Nicole. “Word of advice, strike first then ask questions later. I would honestly love to know you all are alive and healthy once all this is over”
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Josiah took her stance, Finley and Marco followed immediately.
“You heard Josiah, sweetie… strike first and you best bet Josiah, my woman will fare well”
That was it…
Talk was over, now their fists were going to do the talking.
Nicole stared at Finley one last time then we turned the corner and sped away.
We moved quickly and stealthily, our feet carrying us easily around the house.
My heart thumped wildly in my chest, and I could feel my movements lag behind and I struggled to keep up with Nicole's fast pace.
She screeched to a halt suddenly, her fingers wrapped around my arm tightly as she pulled me back.
Three daggers launched towards us with astonishing speed, I ducked just as Nicole moved to a defense position.
“Shit,” she murmured.
I raised my head to stare at her and my eyes widened into saucers.
She stood in front of me, three Japanese looking throw knives with a ring-like shape on the head… it was caught in her right hand… and a fourth one was caught in her left hand behind her.
A sickly thin woman walked towards us, her movements robotics and tacky, she dragged behind a utility belt on the floor… inside the belt hoops lay different sorts of weapons, ranging from daggers to spikes and throwing knives.
I blinked in surprise as I watched the figure move closer.
