Chapter 91 The Embers

Chapter 91 The Embers

Ronan's POV

“Start talking” I ordered, the moment the door closed behind us.

“Shouldn't we at least settle in my office first?” Zeibar asked.

“I really am not in the mood Zeibar” I scowled.

“Fine then…” he murmured. “The orders came from a Jew”

I frowned, that was impossible.

“Impossible right,” Zeibar said, opening his office door and we both walked in. “That was my thought also”

He rounded his desk and pulled open his drawers, his fingers moved around for a few seconds then he came out with a piece of paper.

“Until this” he said, handing me the paper.

My eyes skimmed through it, over and over again.

“Trust me, I already did everything you're doing, faxed it, checked it with the bureau and the council, they all said it was legit straight from none other than the Overlords themselves, through the Jews”

“How?” I asked in confusion.

“I've wondered the same thing too but it all kept coming back to you” he said, staring at me intensely.

“If you must know… after all these years, I started digging into father's death. For a Mafia head he kinda died a bit conveniently for a mere hit and run accident and guess what I found” his grinned, eyes narrowed into slits.

“Turns out dad had decided to gather information regarding your family, just as he promised you… and they killed him not because he got too close but because he actually found out the truth”

My heart hammered fast in my chest.

I shook my head in disbelief.

“I would love to say I'm lying to you Roe, but I'm not” he said, voice surprisingly soft. It was almost like we were back to being kids again.

“How are you faring?” After thinking for a while, I decided to ask that question instead.

He scoffed. “Don't start getting all emotional on me, the old man might have not liked me just as I didn't like him too but we were blood, it hurts more to know he was killed plot wise”

I sat down and placed my elbow on my knee while my fingers supported my chin on them. My feet tapped the floor monotonously while my mind strayed far away.

“Tell me everything you know,” I said.

He smiled slightly. “On October 6th, two years ago, I was rummaging around in the warehouse when I came across a subtle dent in father's precious vase, the one he molded with his own hands. Funny how I instantly panicked… it was like being a kid again and thinking about how dad would have my head once he found out and knowing the old man he wouldn't believe me if I told him I wasn't the one” his smile faltered for a millisecond, then back again.

“Anyway, it clicked that he was dead already… but I guess even for a brief moment I felt some sort of pity towards the object and I decided to take it to our porter to see if it could be fixed” he stood up and walked towards a tiny door in his office.

It was a door only two people alive knew about in the Dias household, a secret compartment, hidden in plain sight that Zeibar's father had built and it could only be accessed with the blood of the both of us.

He pierced his thumb with a pin and placed the bloodied finger on the wall and it slowly opened, inside he took out the vase and brought it to the desk.

“It's still cracked,” I said.

“It is… after what I found out, I couldn't risk leaving it in the hands of the porter”

I stared at him. “This porter… were they by any chance involved in your knowing about this truth you're about to tell me”

“Yes…while the lady was working on it, she came across some intriguing pattern inside the vase and showed it to me. I thought nothing of it at first but seeing as I was bored out of my mind at the time, I decided to check it out.”

“And the moment you found out it was tied to your father and the Overlords, what did you do to this porter?”

He smiled slyly. “Ohh… I see where this is going… well what do you think I did?” He asked.

I guess it was inevitable.

“Nevermind, go on” I said.

“It was layered with information concerning your family” he smiled sadly. “It just showed how much he loved you, he'd carved every piece of clue to your family safely with his own hands”

I didn't want to comment on it, so I stayed silent instead.

He opened his drawers and pulled out sheets of papers. “As I said… They're just clues with no real information, a whole bunch of clues about Mafia restricted information about the ancient members and old Cartel heads. I'm guessing he must have expected the attack as he kept on digging deeper, eventually digging his early grave”

“When he died, I remember a lot of people came in to retrieve his things as per protocol, what are the odds that all of his research about your family was taken by the higher ups, I mean at the time we didn't think anything of it until recently”

He paused, while I listened intently.

“A message came in… more like a warning, foolish people actually gave me the missing piece in my board, granted people like to believe that Dias Cartel knows it all, I guess it's easy to fool even the higher ups into thinking I already have an edge over them when in reality I was just waiting for the Ace in my game”

For some reason I felt odd… I didn't want to know, because I had this sinking feeling, that knowing would twist everything around and still…

“What was this information?” I asked.

Zeibar leaned back in his chair.

“The Royals,”

His smile widened.

“Not just any Royals, Roe.”

“The Embers”

I froze.

A loud scream followed by gunshots sounded from outside the office, I turned to stare at Zeibar, he had a large smile on his face.

“Took those bastards long enough” he grinned, and stood up while cocking his gun. “I hope your people can handle Alia, times like these I have to unrestrain her.”

I scoffed. “I wouldn't bring them if they couldn't” I replied, walking towards the door.

“Let's go and kill some fuckers” he smirked, opening the door and we slowly walked out.

Just like when we were kids.

For some reason my only worry was a pair of hazel eyes and auburn hair.
