Chapter Twenty Two
The damp, earthy scent of the cave system enveloped them as Aiden and Declan shifted back to their human forms and stepped inside, their footsteps echoing against the jagged rock walls. The air was thick with the musky aroma of ancient stone and the faint hint of something more - a trail that beckoned to be followed.
Casting a sidelong glance at his twin, Aiden's brow furrowed, the muscle in his jaw tightening. "We'll cover more ground if we split up." Without waiting for a response, he turned and disappeared into the shadowy depths, his powerful strides swallowing the darkness.
Declan watched him go, his lips curving into a wry smile. "Always in a hurry." Inhaling deeply, he allowed his senses to expand, reaching out to the myriad of scents that danced on the stale air.
There - a faint trace, barely perceptible, yet undeniably familiar. Lucia. His pulse quickened as he pivoted and raced after the elusive trail, his boots pounding against the uneven terrain. "Hang on, Luce," he murmured, determination etching his features. "We're coming."
Around a sharp bend, Declan spotted the crouched form of one of their trackers, its nose pressed to the ground, nostrils flaring. The wolf's eyes met his, a silent confirmation sparking between them. Lucia's scent - faint, yet unmistakable.
Without a word, Declan surged forward, Aiden falling into step beside him, their gazes locked, a silent understanding passing between them. They would find her, no matter the cost. The primal need to protect their Luna drove them onward, the shadows swallowing their form as they delved deeper into the treacherous depths of the cave.
The damp cave walls glistened in the hazy moonlight that filtered in through the narrow opening, casting an ethereal glow that illuminated their path. Declan's nostrils flared as they pressed onward, the scent of Lucia growing stronger with each step. His heart pounded in his chest, a mix of anticipation and trepidation.
"The trail is getting warmer," Aiden murmured, his eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. "She must be close."
Declan nodded, his muscles tensing as they ventured deeper into the winding network of tunnels. The air was thick with the earthy scent of the cave and the faint lingering trace of Lucia's alluring fragrance. Her presence was palpable, radiating a raw power that set his nerves on edge.
"Lucia?" he called out, his voice echoing against the stone walls. "Lucia!"
Lucia's scent was overpowering now, surrounding them like a sensual veil, but that scent mingled with Ryder’s and the scent of pain. He’d hurt her, again.
The tunnel was shrouded in a cloak of impenetrable darkness, the air thick with the scent of Lucia that consumed their senses. Aiden and Declan stood in the centre, their bodies tense with the weight of the unknown that lay ahead.
Declan's fingers brushed against the rough stone walls, searching for any sign of an entryway, but the surface remained unbroken. His brow furrowed, dark lashes casting shadows across his chiselled features.
"Her scent is everywhere," Aiden murmured, his deep voice cutting through the suffocating silence. "But I can't see any doors or passages."
Declan's gaze locked with his brother's, the azure depths shimmering with a mixture of determination and trepidation. "She has to be close. We can't be that far off the mark."
A shiver ran down Aiden's spine, his instincts prickling with a primal awareness. The cave seemed to pulse with an energy that beckoned them forward, luring them deeper into the unknown.
"We'll find her," Aiden murmured. "Whatever it takes."
Declan nodded, the barest hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "For Lucia," he breathed, the name falling from his lips like a fervent prayer.
The brothers stood there, surrounded by the overwhelming scent of the woman they both desired and loved, their hearts pounding in sync as they braced themselves for what might lie ahead.
A bone-chilling scream echoed through the damp, winding cavern, sending a shiver down Declan's spine. Lucia. Without hesitation, he and Aiden sprinted toward the sound, their feet pounding against the uneven, rocky terrain. The air grew thick with tension, the darkness pressing in around them.
As they drew closer, the feral growls of a wolf reverberated through the tunnel, punctuated by Ryder's commanding voice. "Stop fighting, Lucia. You're mine, and there's nothing you can do about it.” They heard him pause. “You don’t want to do anything about it. I’m your mate, Lucia. You’re mine.”
Lucia's pained response ripped through the gloom, laced with defiance. "Go fuck yourself, Ryder."
Declan and Aiden exchanged a charged glance, their hackles rising. They knew Lucia's ex-mate all too well - his ruthless pursuit of power and domination. The scent of Lucia's fear mingled with Ryder's overwhelming presence, setting their instincts on high alert.
Pressing onward, they followed the sound of the struggle, their hearts pounding. Shadows danced across the jagged walls, obscuring their view. Declan and Aiden's muscles coiled, poised to shift and lunge if necessary.
Aiden's boots pounded against the damp stone, his lungs burning as he and Declan raced through the winding labyrinth of tunnels. The air was thick with Lucia's scent, a heady floral aroma that lingered on every surface, taunting them. Declan ran beside him, his face a mask of grim determination.
Up ahead, they found a doorway, the entrance to a cavernous bedroom. Aiden skidded to a halt, his gaze sweeping the room. The large bed dominated the space, its twisted sheets stained with the blood. Restraints dangled uselessly from the headboard, broken and torn.
"She was here," Declan murmured, his eyes darting around the room. "But where is she now?"
Aiden's heart pounded, a mix of fear and fury coursing through him. Lucia's safety was paramount - they couldn't afford to lose her trail now, not when Ryder was closing in on what he wanted. He turned, scanning the room for any other exits, but didn’t find any.
The stale, damp air of the cave tunnel clung to Declan's skin as he and Aiden hurried down the corridor, Lucia's scent growing stronger with every step. The ethereal glow of the phosphorescent rocks lining the walls cast an unearthly light, casting shadows that seemed to shift and dance on the periphery of their vision.
Declan's heart pounded in his chest, adrenaline coursing through his veins. They were so close, he could practically taste Lucia's fear in the air. The thought of that bastard Ryder laying a hand on her made his wolf snarl in protective fury.
"This way," Aiden murmured, nostrils flaring as he caught a stronger whiff of her scent. Declan followed closely, their footsteps echoing in the labyrinth of tunnels.
The air grew thicker, heavy with the musk of Ryder's pheromones, mingling with the intoxicating floral notes of Lucia's own alluring scent. Declan's wolf whined, straining at the bit to find their mate and defend her.
"I can hear them up ahead," Aiden growled, his voice laced with a feral edge. "Get ready."
Declan nodded, steeling himself for the confrontation. Whatever that bastard Ryder was doing to Lucia, they would put an end to it. She was theirs, their Luna, and no one would take her from them.
