Chapter Twenty One

The shadows in the cave seemed to close in around Aiden and Declan, their wolf senses on high alert. The damp air clung to their skin, a constant reminder of the elusive prey they pursued.

Aiden ran a hand through his dark hair, frustration etched in the furrow of his brow. "We've searched every inch of this place, and still nothing. Not a single trace of her scent." His piercing blue eyes narrowed, the weight of his responsibility as alpha evident in their depth.

Declan placed a reassuring hand on his twin's shoulder, his usual playful demeanour subdued by the gravity of their situation. "Don't worry, brother. We'll find her. She couldn't have just vanished into thin air." His gaze swept the cavernous space, searching for any overlooked clue.

Aiden's jaw tightened, the muscles in his neck corded with tension. "I should have been there to protect her. As the alpha, it's my duty to keep our pack safe." His fingers clenched into fists, the guilt weighing heavily on his conscience.

Declan squeezed Aiden's shoulder, his voice low and soothing. "This isn't your fault, Aiden. Lucia wouldn't want you blaming yourself." He paused, a flicker of concern crossing his features. "We'll find her, I promise. Even if I have to tear this entire cave system apart."

Aiden's eyes flashed with a hint of wolf, the predatory determination igniting within him. "Then that's exactly what we'll do." He turned, his gaze sweeping the shadows, searching for any sign of the true Luna they had sworn to protect.

The tension in the air was palpable, a seductive undertone that hinted at the dangerous game they were playing. Aiden and Declan knew they were running out of time, and the thought of failing Lucia weighed heavily on their minds. But she was their mate, and they would stop at nothing to bring her home.

The flickering candlelight cast a warm, amber glow across the worn map, the edges worn and wrinkled from hours of meticulous scrutiny. Declan could just imagine Lucia's slender fingers tracing the intricate lines, her piercing blue eyes narrowed in concentration as she crossed out yet another dead end. A low, guttural growl rumbled in Declan's chest, his wolf pacing restlessly as he loomed over the table, his broad shoulders tense with frustration.

"Damn it," he muttered, his voice laced with a faint hint of his usual charm, now all but extinguished by the weight of their fruitless search. "We've been through every inch of those caves and still nothing."

Beside him, Aiden remained silent, his brow furrowed as he studied the map, the torchlight flickering across his chiselled features.

Declan ran a hand through his sandy hair, his blue eyes blazing with a mix of frustration and determination. "We'll keep searching. I won't stop until we find her."

Aiden cleared his throat, his gaze flicking between the two of them. "We'll divide the caves, and cover more ground. This ends tonight."

The growls of their wolves intensified, the sound reverberating through the room as they bent over the map, their fingers tracing the contours of the terrain, each lost in their own thoughts, driven by an unbreakable bond and an unwavering determination to uncover the truth.

The air thickened with tension as Aiden and Declan stood before the map, their fingers tracing the contours of the caves they had already scoured. The pads of their fingertips grazed the paper, leaving smudges in their wake, a physical manifestation of their growing frustration.

Aiden's brow furrowed, a low rumble building in his chest. "We've been through every damn cave in a ten-mile radius. Where could she be?"

Declan's jaw tightened, his wolf pacing restlessly just beneath the surface. "I don't know, but I can feel her, Aiden. She's in pain." His blue eyes flickered with a dangerous edge. "Ryder is hurting her."

The mere mention of their mate's abusive ex-partner had both wolves snarling, their claws extending as a wave of possessive fury washed over them. Aiden's heart pounded, his senses hyper-aware, attuned to the slightest shift in Lucia's well-being.

Suddenly, a searing pain lanced through their bond, stealing the breath from their lungs. Aiden and Declan doubled over, their throats constricting as if an invisible hand was closing around them. Lucia's distress reverberated through their very being, igniting a primal need to protect her.

"We have to find her," Aiden growled, his voice rough with barely contained rage. "Now."

Without another word, the twins surged towards the door, their wolves prowling beneath their skin, ready to unleash their wrath upon the one who dared to harm their mate.

Paws pounded against the damp earth, claws digging into the soft soil as Aiden and Declan raced through the forest, their wolves taking total control. They could not handle someone having taken their mate. Hurting their mate.

The cool night air whipped through their fur, tinged with the scent of fear and the promise of violence.

Aiden's muscles coiled and flexed with each powerful stride, his senses hyper-alert. The growls rumbling in his chest reverberated through his very bones, fueled by the anguish of their mate's suffering. Declan ran at his side, their connection thrumming with a shared desperation to find Lucia and bring her home.

Behind them, Ethan and the pack's most skilled trackers followed, their footfalls a steady rhythm that echoed Aiden's determined heartbeat. They would not stop, would not rest, until they located the elusive cave system Ryder must have been hiding Lucia in that had so far evaded their search.

A flash of movement caught Aiden's eye, and with a snarl, he and Declan pounced, their jaws clamping down on the necks of a pair of startled rogues. The intruders crumpled, their cries cut short as the Hawthorne twins made quick work of the threat.

Aiden paused, nostrils flaring as he scanned the area, but the scent of their mate remained frustratingly absent. His wolf howled in anguish, the sound reverberating through the night. Declan nudged him urgently, and with a shared nod, they pressed on, their pack at their heels.

The inky blackness of the cave enveloped them, the only light filtering in from the entrance far behind. Declan felt a prickling sensation crawl down the back of his neck, like invisible teeth scraping against his skin. His wolf growled, hackles raised, senses on high alert.

"Aiden," he breathed, voice low with urgency. "I can feel it. He's... he's marking her."

Aiden's eyes flashed with a feral intensity as he felt it too, his wolf clawing to the surface, pushing the man back. The primal need to protect their mate surged through him, overpowering everything else. "We have to hurry," he growled, muscles coiling as he broke into a sprint, Declan matching his pace effortlessly.

The rhythmic pounding of their paws against the rocky ground echoed through the cave, a thunderous cadence that belied their desperation. Declan's heart raced, a symphony of fear and fury. ‘Lucia, hold on. We're coming.’

Their connection to her thrummed with a sense of violation, Ryder's touch desecrating the sacred bond they shared. Aiden bared his canines, a guttural snarl rumbling in his chest. The need to tear Ryder limb from limb was almost overwhelming, but they had to focus - Lucia was their priority.

The air grew thick with the scent of their mate, laced with the acrid tang of Ryder's influence. Declan felt his wolf strain against his control, every instinct demanding he rip the other Alpha apart and claim what was rightfully theirs.

‘Not yet,’ he silently urged his wolf. ‘Just a little longer. We'll make him pay, but first we have to save her.’
