Chapter 145: The War Of Love

Chapter 145: The War Of Love
"She was working against us the whole time. I swear to you, Lexi, I never touched her. I never wanted her. It was always you."
Tears welled in Lexi’s eyes.
"But you didn’t trust me," she said hoarsely. "You didn’t trust me enough to tell me the truth. You made me feel like I was crazy. Like I was nothing."
Julian crossed the room in two strides, falling to his knees in front of her.
His hands gripped her waist, his forehead pressing against her stomach.
"I know," he whispered. "I know. And I would spend every day for the rest of my life trying to earn back your trust if you let me."
Lexi stood frozen, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Why should I believe you?" she choked out.
He looked up at her, his blue eyes shining with tears.
"Because I love you," he said simply. "I love you more than anything. More than my pride. More than my empire. More than my own damn life."
Her heart cracked all over again.
Because she believed him.
She hated it.
But she believed him.
She dropped to her knees too, her hands trembling as they cupped his face.
"I’m scared," she whispered.
He kissed her palms gently.
"So am I," he admitted.
"But we can be scared together," he said. "We can rebuild. If you’ll let me."
For a long, agonizing moment, she just stared at him.
Then, slowly, she nodded.
Julian let out a shuddering breath and pulled her into his arms.
They clung to each other like drowning people finally reaching shore.
Tears.
Whispers.
Promises.
A new beginning, rising from the ashes of all their pain.
—
Hours later, they lay tangled together on her small bed.
The city lights flickered outside.
Julian traced lazy patterns along her bare arm.
"I’m never letting you go again," he murmured.
Lexi smiled faintly.
"You say that now."
He kissed her shoulder.
"I’ll say it every day for the rest of my life."
She turned to face him, her heart full.
"Julian?"
"Hmm?"
She hesitated.
Then whispered the truth she had been too afraid to admit until now.
"I never stopped loving you."
He smiled, wide and raw and beautiful.
"Good," he said.
"Because I never stopped loving you either."
And somewhere, deep in the fragile pieces of her heart, Lexi Thorn dared to hope again.
Dared to believe that maybe, just maybe —
Some love stories were messy.
Broken.
Bloody.
But still worth fighting for.
Still worth living for.
And this?
This was their story.
Moving back into the penthouse should have felt strange.
But it didn’t.
The moment Lexi stepped through the doors, it was like slipping into a place that had always been hers, even before she realized it.
Julian hovered at her side, tense but trying not to crowd her.
His hand brushed the small of her back, featherlight, as if still asking for permission to touch her.
Lexi offered him a small smile — tentative, unsure, but real — and he visibly relaxed.
“Welcome home,” he whispered.
Home.
The word lodged itself deep inside her heart.
For a long time, she had searched for somewhere she belonged.
Maybe... she had been standing in it all along.
—
The first few days were like a dream.
Julian smothered her with affection in the way only a man terrified of losing her again could.
Breakfasts in bed.
Private rooftop dinners.
Long walks along the beach where he listened — really listened — to everything she said.
They spent their nights tangled together under the covers, limbs wrapped so tightly it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began.
Lexi should have been content.
But something gnawed at her.
A creeping feeling she couldn't shake.
At first, she blamed it on stress.
On rebuilding trust.
On trying to forgive.
But when she started waking up nauseous every morning, she knew it wasn’t just stress.
Or guilt.
Or fear.
Something was happening inside her.
And deep down, she already knew.
She just didn’t want to admit it.
—
It was Emma who pushed her over the edge.
One afternoon, as they lounged on the balcony together, sipping smoothies Julian had insisted they both drink for “vitamins,” Emma had scrunched up her nose.
“You look kinda pale,” Emma had said bluntly. “You’re not, like, sick, right?”
Lexi laughed it off, but her hands trembled slightly.
Later that night, while Julian was on a conference call, Lexi slipped out and made her way to the nearest pharmacy.
She bought the test.
Two, actually.
Just to be sure.
And then she raced back to the penthouse, heart hammering like a trapped bird inside her chest.
—
The first test blinked back at her within seconds.
Positive.
Lexi sank onto the cool bathroom floor, hands trembling.
She forced herself to take the second test.
Positive.
Two pink lines.
Twice.
There was no mistake.
She was pregnant.
With Julian’s child.
—
For a long time, she just sat there, staring at the little plastic sticks in her hand.
Shock.
Joy.
Terror.
It all swirled inside her like a storm.
She pressed her hand against her flat stomach, almost disbelieving.
A baby.
Their baby.
She was carrying a piece of him inside her.
Tears filled her eyes, but she wiped them away fiercely.
She needed to think.
To breathe.
To figure out how — when — she would tell him.
Julian was still healing from everything they’d been through.
Would he be ready for this?
Would he even want this?
The thought of disappointing him — of being the reason he felt trapped — made her heart clench painfully.
—
That night, she didn’t say anything.
She crawled into bed beside him, curled into his side, and listened to the steady beat of his heart.
Safe.
Steady.
Unbreakable.
She closed her eyes and tried to believe that everything would be okay.
That love would be enough.
But fear whispered otherwise.
What if it wasn’t?
What if loving each other still wasn’t enough to survive what was coming?
—
The next morning, Julian noticed.
Of course he did.
"You’re quiet today," he murmured as he handed her a cup of coffee.
Lexi forced a smile.
“I’m just tired.”
He studied her, those sharp blue eyes seeing far too much.
But he didn’t push.
Instead, he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Rest today. Stay in bed if you want."
Lexi nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat.
She watched him get dressed for a meeting, her heart aching with everything she hadn’t said yet.
"I love you," she said suddenly, voice cracking.
Julian paused, halfway through buttoning his shirt.
He turned and crossed to her, cupping her face gently between his hands.
"And I love you," he said, voice low and sure. "More than anything."
Their foreheads touched.
For a moment, everything else fell away.
Lexi closed her eyes, letting herself believe it.
Letting herself hope.
