Chapter 107 A little too much
With that, the doctor turned and walked back toward his office.
Alex removed his hand from the phone mouthpiece and spoke again. “Margaret, I’ll be there in twenty minutes.” He ended the call and slipped the phone back into his pocket before turning fully to Lucas. His expression softened immediately.
“So,” he asked, searching Lucas’s face, “Anything to worry about?”
Lucas shook his head gently. “No, honey. Nothing serious. They want to run some tests, to check if there are any changes in my hormones.”
Alex’s brows pulled together slightly. “Are you sure you want to go through with that?”
Lucas nodded. “Yes. I’d like to know too.” A small smile crept onto his lips. “You never can tell, miracles do exist, right?”
Alex stared at him for a moment, his eyes warming with affection.
“Hmm,” he murmured before pulling Lucas into a tight but gentle embrace. “Finding you was one of the greatest miracles I’ve had in two years.”
Lucas melted into the hug, resting briefly against his chest.
After a moment Alex pulled back, keeping an arm around his shoulder. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s head to the office. I already told Lizzy you’re off duty today.”
Lucas raised an eyebrow playfully. “Aren’t you pampering me a little too much?”
“Too much?” Alex scoffed softly. “Not even close.”
Lucas laughed quietly and hugged him again before they walked toward the parking lot together.
A few minutes later, they were already on the road. The city traffic rolled steadily past them as Alex drove. Then Lucas’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen. It was Nathan.
Lucas sighed softly before answering. “Hello, Nat.”
Nathan’s voice came through immediately, sharp with curiosity. “Lucas, where are you? I’ve been trying to get in touch with you. Is everything okay?”
Lucas leaned back against the seat. “I just left the hospital.” The words slipped out before he realized it.
“The hospital?” Nathan’s voice rose in alarm. “What happened?”
Lucas glanced briefly at Alex, who was already looking at him with a question-marked face.
“Relax,” Lucas said calmly. “Nothing bad, just a little fever. I'm alright.”
“Oh dear, you should at least reply to my text messages. You got me worried.”
Oh, I'm sorry Nat, I haven't checked my phone since last night.
Nathan was silent for a few seconds. “You're coming home later right? I will prepare a nice meal for you.” He said smoothly.
As Nathan mentioned about the meal, something flickered in Alex’s face and Lucas noticed it.
“Come on Nat, no need for that. I'm eating out tonight.”
“Oh, alright. I guess you're feeling much better. Enjoy your meal then.” Nathan sounded a bit disappointed and that triggered some jealousy in Alex.
Lucas stared out of the car window, watching the world rush past in a blur of buildings, traffic, and flashing lights. His mind was still lingering on Alex's reaction. Then he chortled lightly without a word.
The silence in the car stretched for a few seconds. Then suddenly, Alex asked, “Is he making advances at you now?”
Lucas blinked and turned sharply toward Alex. “What?”
For a moment he didn’t understand what Alex meant. Then it clicked.
“Nathan?” Lucas let out a short laugh of disbelief. “Seriously?”
Alex kept his eyes on the road, jaw tight, fingers gripping the steering wheel a little too firmly.
Lucas shook his head and leaned back in his seat. “Come on,” he said calmly. “We’ve been friends for three years. Don’t overthink things.”
Alex said nothing but Lucas continued patiently, trying to ease the tension. “Offering to cook a nice meal for me isn’t anything new. I do the same for him sometimes. We even practice new recipes together.”
Another silence followed.
“Come on, he’s my best friend, Alex,” Lucas added softly. “And I can’t just cut him out of my life.”
Alex’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Best friend… hmm.”
His voice was low, almost a mumble through clenched teeth.
The car turned sharply into the company’s parking lot.
“Fine,” Alex muttered, parking the car. “But am I not supposed to be your best friend now?”
Before Lucas could respond, Alex opened the door and stepped out. He walked toward the company building in long, impatient strides.
Lucas sighed and got out of the car, following behind him at a slower pace. He didn’t bother trying to catch up.
At the elevator, Alex stood waiting with a dark, grumpy expression plastered across his face.
Lucas stepped inside beside him.
The elevator doors slid shut.
Lucas glanced sideways at him, then chuckled lightly.
“Stop acting up for nothing,” he said. “It’s really not necessary.”
Alex didn’t respond. He didn’t even look at him.
The elevator dinged, and the doors opened.
Alex walked out first. They entered his office moments later.
Without a word, Alex headed straight toward the side of the room where a large couch sat beside a glass table. He loosened his tie slightly and dropped his phone on the table.
“Are you hungry?” he asked stiffly, his face still clouded with irritation.
Lucas folded his arms and stared at him. “Alex,” he said firmly, “Stop behaving like a child.”
That got Alex’s attention, but he still didn’t speak. Lucas walked closer. “What I have with Nat is great,” he continued, his tone softer now, “but it’s not the same as what I have with you.”
Alex looked away again, pretending to straighten some documents on the desk.
“If you’re hungry,” he said flatly, ignoring Lucas’s words, “Call Judy.”
He scribbled a number quickly on a small piece of paper and dropped it on the table. “Tell her to bring whatever you want.”
Lucas stared at the paper but didn't say a word.
“I’m off to the meeting,” Alex added shortly. He grabbed his folder and headed straight for the door.
Lucas watched him in disbelief.
“Seriously?” he muttered under his breath.
The door closed behind Alex without another word. Lucas exhaled slowly and rubbed his temples. “Can I really handle his over-possessiveness?” he murmured to himself.
The irritation that had been building inside him suddenly flared.
“Oh no… he doesn’t get to walk away like that.”
Lucas shot to his feet and marched toward the door. “If he thinks he can walk away like that, that's a little too much and I can do the same.”
The moment he pulled open the door, a waitress was already standing there, holding a tray neatly arranged with sliced fruits, juice, and small pastries.
The young woman blinked in surprise. “Um… excuse me, sir,” she said politely. “Mr. Alex asked me to bring this for you.”
Lucas exhaled slowly. “Just drop it on the table.”
She walked in and carefully placed the tray on the glass table.
Lucas studied her for a moment. “Are you Miss Judy?”
She straightened slightly. “Yes, Mr. Lucas.”
“Alright. Thank you, Judy.”
“You’re welcome,” she replied with a bright smile before turning and leaving the office.
The door clicked shut. Silence filled the room again.
Lucas walked over to the table and stared down at the colorful arrangement of fruits.
