Unclean hands
Unclean hands
Chapter: The New Threat
The safe house was quiet for the first time since their arrival. Outside, the forest rustled softly in the night breeze. Inside, the group gathered in the living room, still tense from the fight with Skye.
Lyra sat on the couch, her hands wrapped around a warm cup of tea. Her body ached from the battle, but her mind could not rest. “We barely handled her,” she said quietly. “What if the next one is worse?”
Damien leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “Then we fight harder. We can’t let them win.”
Maya paced back and forth, eyes scanning the shadows outside the window. “Skye was only a scout. Whoever is behind this, they are testing us. Finding our weaknesses. And they will not stop.”
Jack slumped in a chair, rubbing his forehead. “I cannot believe how fast all of this is moving. It’s like every step we take, someone is already ahead.”
Rowan, sitting on the floor, shook his head. “It is bigger than we thought. Skye is not the only one. There are others, stronger than her, more dangerous.”
Cole stood near the kitchen counter, cleaning his dagger. “We need allies. We cannot handle this alone.”
Lyra’s eyes narrowed. “We do have allies. We just have to be careful who we trust.”
At that moment, the door creaked open slowly. The group stiffened. No one had expected anyone else tonight.
A girl stepped inside. She was young, maybe a year older than them, with dark hair and sharp eyes that seemed to miss nothing. Her movements were smooth and deliberate.
“Who are you?” Maya asked immediately, stepping forward.
The girl smiled faintly. “My name is Safe.” Her voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. “I am here to help.”
“Help?” Jack repeated, suspicion clear in his tone. “How do we know we can trust you?”
Safe tilted her head. “Because we have a common enemy. And because I know what you are dealing with.”
Lyra studied her carefully. “What do you know?”
“I know about the hybrids,” Safe said. “The people who make humans into monsters, who twist bloodlines into weapons. And I know how dangerous they are.”
Damien frowned. “Why come to us? Why not fight them on your own?”
“Because I cannot,” she said simply. “Not without guidance. And not without allies I can trust.”
Maya crossed her arms. “And why should we trust you?”
Safe smiled again, a little colder this time. “Because I can shift.”
The word hung in the air.
“What do you mean?” Lyra asked.
“I am a shapeshifter,” Safe said. “I can become almost anyone. Humans, wolves, hybrids… even some monsters. It is why I survived the Architects.”
Rowan exchanged a glance with Kade. “Then you are exactly what we need,” Rowan said slowly.
Jack looked uneasy. “Shapeshifters can be dangerous. How do we know you won’t turn on us?”
Safe’s gaze was steady. “You don’t. But I need them stopped as much as you do. That is enough for now.”
Maya finally nodded. “Alright. You can stay. But every move you make will be watched.”
Safe shrugged lightly. “I would expect nothing less.”
The group spent the rest of the night planning. Maps were spread out on the table, marking locations of the known labs, potential traps, and areas where the hybrids were most active.
Lyra leaned over the map, pointing to one of the labs. “This one has the highest activity. If we hit it, we may be able to stop them from making more.”
“Then that is our target,” Damien said. “We go at dawn.”
Safe stepped forward. “I can scout ahead. I can get us in without alerting the guards.”
Maya looked at her carefully. “How long can you maintain a shift?”
“Until I am tired,” Safe said simply. “Or until I am caught.”
Jack shook his head. “This feels too risky.”
“No risk, no reward,” Lyra said sharply. “We know what they are capable of. If we do nothing, more people will die.”
Rowan placed a hand on her shoulder. “She is right. We have no choice.”
As they continued planning, the forest outside the safe house remained silent. The air felt heavy, almost alive, like something was watching.
Hours passed. By the time they finished, the sun was just starting to rise. Birds began chirping faintly, but the tension in the room did not lessen.
Damien leaned back in his chair. “I thought after Skye, things would calm down. I was wrong.”
Lyra glanced at him. “We never get a break, do we?”
“No,” Maya said firmly. “Not if we want to survive.”
Safe walked to the window, looking out at the forest. “Whatever comes next, we need to be ready. They will come, and they will not stop until they get what they want.”
The group nodded.
Jack’s voice broke the silence. “Then we prepare. Tonight is over. Tomorrow we hunt.”
Lyra looked around at all of them. Her heart pounded. They had survived Skye. They had new allies. They had a plan.
And yet, deep down, she knew the danger was far from over.
Damien’s hand found hers, giving a reassuring squeeze. “We face it together,” he said quietly.
She nodded, drawing a deep breath. The night behind them had been dangerous, but it was the dawn that mattered now.
The safe house, hidden in the forest, felt like the only place in the world that was theirs. For now.
But somewhere out there, hidden in the shadows, the Architects were watching, waiting, planning.
And Lyra knew they were ready.
“Tomorrow,” she whispered, “we end this.”
The forest stayed silent, but the feeling of eyes on them lingered.
Safe turned from the window, her expression unreadable. “Be ready. They will strike first, and hard.”
Everyone nodded.
Lyra clenched her hands, determination burning inside her. They had lost battles, but the war was just beginning.
And they would fight with everything they had.
The hunt had begun.
The shadows shifted in the trees outside, and a faint, chilling whisper reached their ears. “They cannot stop us.”
