The hunt begins

The hunt begins

Lyra’s hands trembled slightly as she loaded her bag with weapons, vials, and enchanted stones. Every sound outside Maya’s safe house made her flinch. The forest surrounding them was quiet, too quiet, as if the night itself was holding its breath.
“They will come,” Maya said softly, checking the locks on the windows. Her eyes scanned the treeline. “And they will not be gentle.”
Damien adjusted the strap of his own bag, glancing at Lyra. “We are ready. We have to be. Whatever they are planning, we cannot let them catch anyone else.”
Jack paced behind them, restless, running his fingers through his hair. “I still don’t get how they keep finding us. Every step we take, it’s like they are always one move ahead.”
Cole, who had recovered from his last injuries, leaned against the wall. “Because they are not normal. They plan for everything. We have to outthink them, not just fight.”
Lyra looked at everyone, feeling the weight of what was coming. “Then we split up. Draw their attention, hit multiple points at once. We cannot give them a chance to adapt.”
“Split up?” Jack groaned. “Are you insane? We’re not exactly a normal team. Some of us can barely handle ourselves.”
“You have no choice,” Maya snapped. “The faster we act, the faster we can stop this.”
They agreed to meet back at the safe house in three hours. Rowan and Kade took the north perimeter to scout. Maya stayed to guide Lyra and Damien through the east side. Cole and Jack would cover the south.
Lyra felt her stomach twist as they moved through the dark forest. Every snapping twig made her jump. She could feel the faint hum of power ahead, an almost invisible presence in the trees.
“I sense them,” she whispered to Damien. “Close. Too close.”
Damien nodded, his eyes scanning the shadows. “Be ready. No mistakes.”
They crept through the underbrush, their steps soft. A low rustling came from behind a tree. Lyra froze. Damien tensed.
A figure stepped out, cloaked in black, face hidden. Lyra’s hand flew to her dagger.
“Stop!” Damien shouted.
The figure tilted their head. “You move well for someone who is supposed to be hiding.”
Lyra recognized the voice instantly. “Skye,” she hissed.
Skye smirked, stepping fully into view. Her eyes glowed faintly, almost golden. “You really think you can come here and fight alone?”
Maya’s voice echoed from the shadows. “We are not alone.”
Skye’s gaze swept over the group. “Cute.”
The air grew heavy. Energy rippled around them, faint sparks of power.
“Attack,” Skye commanded suddenly, and shadows lunged from the treeline.
Lyra swung her dagger, cutting through one of the forms, while Damien unleashed a wave of power that knocked two others back. Jack and Cole fought fiercely, moving in tandem to hold their ground.
Maya ran forward, her hands glowing with protective energy. “Cover me!” she shouted, moving toward Skye.
Skye laughed, a harsh, metallic sound. “You think you can touch me?” She moved like water, fluid and impossible to predict, and struck back with a force that sent Maya skidding across the ground.
Lyra’s heart pounded. She had to do something. She reached for the enchanted powder in her bag, her hands shaking. Damien shouted, “Not yet! Wait for the opening!”
Skye was relentless. She split herself into two forms, moving faster than they could track. One attacked Damien while the other circled Lyra, teeth bared in a sneer.
“Lyra, now!” Maya yelled.
Lyra hurled the powder. It burst into a cloud around Skye’s forms. Both of Skye’s bodies screamed as the wolfsbane burned against her skin. Her eyes widened in shock and pain. With a final screech, the forms disintegrated into smoke, leaving nothing behind.
Everyone collapsed to the ground, gasping for air.
“She’s gone?” Jack asked, his voice trembling.
“For now,” Maya said. “But she will be back. She always comes back.”
Lyra wiped sweat from her brow. “That was too close.”
Damien helped her stand. “We did it together.”
Rowan and Kade emerged from the shadows, nodding in approval. “Impressive,” Rowan said. “But this is just the beginning. You’ve won a battle, not the war.”
Maya’s gaze hardened. “We need to regroup, plan our next move carefully. They are testing us, seeing what we can handle.”
Lyra’s hands clenched into fists. “Then we show them that we are stronger than they think. No more running, no more hiding.”
A distant howl echoed through the forest. The group froze.
“That was not Skye,” Kade said quietly. “Something bigger is coming.”
Lyra swallowed hard, feeling the tension coil in her chest. “Then we prepare,” she said firmly. “Whatever it is, we face it together.”
From the treeline, the shadows shifted. A chill ran through the group.
Damien placed a hand on Lyra’s shoulder. “Are you ready?”
She looked around at everyone, seeing determination in their faces. “I am.”
The forest fell silent again, but the sense of danger hung heavier than ever.
Rowan’s voice broke the tension. “We have survived tonight. That is what matters. But the real fight is ahead.”
Lyra nodded. “And we will not fail. Not this time.”
The wind whispered through the trees, carrying a warning. Somewhere out there, their enemies were watching, waiting, planning.
But for the first time in a long while, Lyra felt a spark of hope.
They had each other. They had a plan.
And they were ready for whatever came next.
Far off in the shadows, two figures watched, their eyes glowing. One of them spoke softly.
“They have potential,” the taller one said. “But they will need guidance. And they will need to survive what is coming.”
The other nodded. “Then we make our move.”
Lyra tightened her grip on her dagger. “We are not afraid.”
The wind carried a final whisper through the trees, promising the battles ahead, the enemies waiting, and the danger that would never end.
And the hunt was only beginning.
