Chapter 43 A distraction

Chapter 43 A distraction
Getting to the office, Arthur met Anita waiting for him in front of his office.

She wore a white shirt that exposed her cleavages, and a very short skirt that hardly covered her thighs as she sat.

‘Who even let her up?’ He thought in disbelief as he walked to his office.

“Arthur! You’re here.” Anita uttered with excitement as soon as she saw him. She sprang to her feet and ran cutely towards him, but he wasn’t having it.

He moved away from where he stood and headed into his office. “Go away.” He muttered, but this wasn’t going to stop Anita.

After grabbing her bag, she headed into his office too, still grinning widely.

She stood in front of his desk and looked around his office. “I knew you always had good taste. Even though your apartment wasn’t the biggest back then, you knew how to take care of it the little way you could.” She uttered, while Arthur kept ignoring her.

He removed his suit and hung it on his chair before proceeding to sit.

“Blue? I thought your favorite colors were white and black.”

“Listen to me, woman. You know nothing about me. Don’t come here running your mouth like you know me. Now leave, or I’m going to call the security on you and it’s going to be messy. Trust me.” Arthur threatened, looking at her with great anger.

Anita gulped hard and nodded. “I know you still hate me. I’m a terrible person. I hurt you, and I am here to say I’m sorry. I was young and stupid.”

“It doesn’t matter, Anita.”

“It does matter. I am here begging for your forgiveness. I should have done this years ago, but I was scared…”

“So what gives you the courage now?” Arthur scoffed, turning on his laptop as he began to work.

“When I saw you in that mall, the way you looked at me, Arthur…” she walked past his table to where he sat, leaning closer to him.

“What are you doing?!” He tried to move away, but she grabbed his hand, forcing him to look at her.

“Your eyes made me remember our first night together, how nervous you were to see me naked. How scared you were to touch my breasts…”

“Stop Anita! Enough!” Arthur smacked as he sprang up. Her words made these memories flood back into his head.

Back then, she had all the control over him. He did exactly whatever she asked him to do, that was how madly in love he was with her.

‘But I am not that man anymore. No one would ever manipulate me!’ He said to himself, shooting Anita a deadly look.

“Listen to me very carefully, Anita. I have nothing to offer you. No matter how hard you try, whatever you think you’re doing is not going to work. I have a girlfriend…”

“Who you are not sure you’ll settle down with, are you?” Anita cut him short, letting out a smirk.

“Who I settle down with is none of your business. Stay away from me. Erase the thought that anything can happen between us again. I have a girlfriend now and I’m happy with her.”

Anita chuckled and nodded in response. “Fine. I’ll leave you… for now. But me and you know you can’t resist me so easily.”

“Oh watch me.” Arthur scoffed, reaching for the landline to call security.

“Don’t bother. I’m leaving. I’ll see you soon.” She answered, grabbing her bag from the chair. Arthur kept his eyes off her, wanting to hear her leave.

Anita looked back to see if he was looking at her, and when she saw he wasn’t, she took a pause.

“One more thing before I leave.” She uttered, taking hurried steps towards him. Before he could say a word, she leaned against him and planted a kiss on his cheek.

“That is a goodbye kiss.” She giggled before finally heading out.

Arthur clenched his jaws as he glared at her. When she got out, he wiped his cheek off with his palm in disgust.

“Is she sick or something?” He muttered, shaking his head and sitting on his chair.

He called in his secretary and asked for his schedule, and he was told he had about two hours before his next meeting.

Sitting in his office, he couldn’t seem to get Anita out of his head. How sexy she looked and how confident she was that she could win him back.

‘I need someone to talk to.’ He thought, pulling out his phone to send a text.

“I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

After texting, he picked up his suit, wore it and headed out of the office.

He drove down to Mr Richard’s office and when he got there, he saw that he had a client with him. So he waited outside until he was done.

Mr Richard stepped out with his client after a while and met Arthur waiting for him.

“Mr. Arthur.” He called in surprise. “We don’t have an appointment today.” He added, and Arthur nodded.

“I know, but I sent you a text already that I’ll be coming. Are you free?” He asked.

“Not really. I have thirty minutes to prepare for the next client.”

“Can you please give me twenty minutes from that time? I’ll pay you for it”

“Mr. Arthur, I…”

“Anita came to my office about an hour ago.” Arthur butted in.

Mr Richard nodded slowly and opened his door wider. “Come in, Mr. Arthur.”

Arthur nodded as he made his way into his office. He sat on the couch and waited for Mr Richard to settle down in his chair.

Mr Richard grabbed his notepad and pen before sitting in front of me.

“Okay. Mr. Arthur, how are you feeling today?” He asked, placing his leg over the other as he stared at Arthur.

“I’m not sure. Anger, pain and a bit of nostalgia.” Arthur answered.

“Nostalgia? After you saw her in that mall, has anything happened after that?”

“Yes. After I saw her, I couldn’t get her face out of my head so easily. Though I tried to distract myself with the things around me, it didn’t really help. Then, she reached out to me again, over the phone.”

“Hold on a second, Mr. Arthur. Over the phone? How did she get your phone number?”

“I never changed my phone number. It’s been the same ever since.”

“That means she had kept your phone number all these years too.”

“Yes, Mr Richard.”

“Hmm… go on.”

“I blocked that number. But then she called me on my way to the office today with another number to inform me she was in my office. I saw her and she began to tell me she knows she is a bad person and she hurt me, but she wants my forgiveness. And then she started talking about our first night together.”

“And how did this make you feel?”

“I missed it. I missed every bit of it. But I knew I didn’t want it anymore. I told her I have a girlfriend now and nothing will ever happen between us.”

“Okay. Mr Arthur, did you ever have a slight doubt in you when you were saying these things to her?” Mr Richard further asked, and Arthur gulped hard, unable to speak.

“Let’s talk about your girlfriend now. We’ll come back to Anita later. You said you loved her because your kids loved her. But what about your feelings? Did you think about that?”

“My feelings didn’t matter at that time. All that mattered was that my boys were happy and are always happy.”

“Okay. And how are things with her lately? I mean, between both of you now.”

“Things are great, I guess. We’ve had some arguments a few times because of Anita, but she has been a good distraction lately.”

“Distraction? Does that mean you’re still finding it hard to reciprocate her feelings?”

“I’m trying, Mr Richard. It was going all smoothly until Anita showed up again! And now she’s doing the same thing she used to do back then! She’s messing with my head. She’s trying to manipulate me, causing trouble and having me under her control just like before.”

“And what do you feel about this?”

“I don’t know! That’s why I’m here. My head is messed up and I don’t know what to think.” Arthur answered in frustration.

“Fk this! Fk all of these! I’m nothing but a distraction?!” Aurora yelled, turning off her phone as she broke down in tears. She couldn’t listen anymore because every word she heard kept hurting her.

“I knew he didn’t love me. He never loved me!” She mumbled, feeling her heart ache as she wept.
