Chapter 74
Chapter 74
Dominique's POV
I drummed my fingers against the table in front of me, the sound of the tip of my fingers kissing the fine oak wood finishing of the tabletop reaching my ears. It wasn't a particularly catchy tune, and with each rhythm I heard, I winced. I was a bad musician and I wasn't in the mood to do that.
I had bigger things to worry about.
A sigh slid past my lips as I ran my fingers through my hair. I couldn't count the number of times I'd done that in the last minute, but if you really thought about it, you would agree it wasn't any of my fault.
I tilted my side to the side in search of the wall clock. This was an office complex, so there was bound to be one right? I was right and I only had to scour the walls at least three times to find it. The moment I laid my eyes on the clock, I frowned.
It had been an hour since I had gotten here. An hour since I met the doctor in the corridor of the hospital and an hour since he told me to wait for him in his office while he attended to Florence.
Was it that bad?
No, it's not. I told myself. “You're probably overreacting. The doctor is probably busy and has a lot of things to attend to before coming back here.”
However, no matter how hard I chanted those words, it did nothing to change how I felt. I was anxious as fuck and the knots at the bottom of my stomach were doing anything. If anything, I only felt my fear heighten with every second that passed.
What the hell was wrong with Florence?
I hadn't expected her to pass out. Honestly, I'd thought it was a joke at first. A prank to get me to forgive her. She was a deceitful human being and I wasn't sure I wanted to trust any of her shenanigans, so I stayed put in my spot in the living room. I was there for a solid five minutes, until I decided to check on her. So imagine my fear when I'd realized she had fallen unconscious.
I'd let out a loud shriek as I patted her cheeks constantly, just so she could wake up. But no matter how hard I hit her or how many times, she just didn't budge. So I did the reasonable thing I could think of; I rushed her down to the city hospital, where the doctor was currently delaying me and…
“Mr Dominique.” Someone called from behind, cutting through my monologue. “I'm sorry to keep you waiting.”
“It's fine.” I lied to my teeth. I hated being kept waiting, but for the sake of wanting to know what was wrong with Florence, I was going to tolerate it. “I'm sure you had some other things to attend to.”
“Yes.” The doctor nodded as he took his seat opposite of mine. “Yes, I did. But I'm here now.”
“Florence.” I blurted out. “Where is she? And how is she now? What's wrong with her exactly? Is she….?”
“Relax Mr Dominique.” The doctor cut in with a small chuckle. If you asked me, I wasn't exactly sure why he was chuckling, because there was literally nothing funny at the moment. Or had I said something? “ Florence is actually fine. You see, things like this are common in her condition.”
“Condition?” He was still being as vague as ever. “What do you mean?”
“Her condition.” He repeated. “ Did you not know?”
“Condition?” I creased my eyebrows as I chorused after him. Florence didn't have any health complications, did she? If she did, her dad would have told me. Or even her, so what was the doctor yapping about ? “What condition? I don't think she has any…”
“She's pregnant, Mr Dominique.” The words slid past his lips
I felt the world around me spin to a stop. My immediate environment blurred around me, and for a while, the only thing I could hear was the buzz of the doctor's words ringing in my ears.
She's pregnant. Three months gone.
This was impossible, there was just no way it was possible. How exactly could it be? And were their tests efficient? What if they had swapped her tests with someone else's. Could that be it?
“ I know this is a lot to take in.” The doctor's filtered it's way into my mind, pulling me out of my thoughts and into the present. “But see it as a blessing. They say the biggest blessings come in the most unconventional ways. This just might be yours.”
A blessing? I scoffed. He called this a blessing? No. This was a mistake, Florence's mistake. Who could be the father? It certainly wasn't me? We had just started having sex, so how could she be three months gone already? Unless….
A thought popped up in my mind immediately. Was it someone else's? I always thought Florence was different from the others, but with the stunt she had pulled earlier, I wasn't sure I could trust her anymore. Honestly, at this point, I wasn't sure I was the father. It was someone else. Definitely not me.
“I would like to see her.” I let out instead. I knew the doctor was expecting something else, but he wasn't going to get it. At least not from me.
“Fine, this way.” The doctor was on his feet again as he led me towards Florence's ward. When we arrived, we were met with a slight conscious Florence, sprawled on one of the hospital beds.
“Florence.” He called out softly and I watched her eyes pop open. “How are you feeling now? Better?”
“Yes, doctor.” She sounded weak, but I pushed that to the back of my mind. If she could enjoy whoever was ramming hard into her, then she should have prepared herself for this stage as well. “I'm fine.”
“Alright.” The doctor nodded, almost like he could feel the tension in the air.” I'll give you two some space.”
And without so much as another word, he disappeared.
Moments seemed to slip through our fingers as we stared each other down, neither of us wanting to budge first.
“So who is he?” I let out after a couple of minutes. I wasn't sure which was killing me though, the hunger to get my answers, or the fact that I wanted nothing more than to be nowhere near her. The faster she answered my question, the earlier I could leave. “Tell me. Answer me!”
“I don't understand.” She squeaked. “What are you talking about?”
“You're pregnant, damnit!” I watched her eyes double in their size around her sockets. “Three months gone. Now, tell me who the hell the father is!”
“I'm not pregnant.” She blurted out. “I'm a virgin and you're the first person I've ever slept with.”
“Really?” I scoffed with a bitter laugh. “A virgin who sleeps around? Do you need me to remind you that you were never a virgin the times I laid my hands on you? Do you remember?”
A wave of shame hit her immediately, and she raised her hands to cover her face.
“ not only are you a thief, you're a slut too.” My voice rang with nothing but anger. “ And let me say this as clearly as I can. This is the last time I want to see your face.”
And without so much as a single word, I stalked out of the ward, leaving Florence and whatever abomination she was carrying in her belly.
