Chapter 88: Power Controlled
Chapter 88: Power Controlled
Bella did not hesitate.
At exactly nine o’clock in the morning, the livestream went live.
Just a simple podium with the Clara Foundation’s logo carved neatly into clear glass. Bella stood behind it alone. No Marcus nor Nathaniel. No silent support standing at her side.
Only her.
The cameras zoomed in slowly, catching the calm on her face, the steady way her fingers rested on the edge of the podium. Anyone who didn’t know her well might think she was unbothered.
They would be wrong.
“Philanthropy is not ownership,” Bella said, her voice clear and controlled. “And protection does not require surrender.”
The room went still.
Even the reporters stopped shifting in their seats.
“The Clara Foundation will not be absorbed, renamed, or controlled by any corporate body,” she continued. “No matter how powerful. No matter how wealthy.”
A flash of cameras lit the room.
“Our mission exists to protect families who have nothing left to lose. Not to clean reputations. Not to strengthen influence. And not to become anyone’s bargaining tool.”
Her heartbeat thudded loud in her ears, but her voice stayed steady.
“I appreciate the interest,” Bella said. “But I reject the offer.”
Silence followed, no applause.
Just silence that carry weight which is heavy and sharp, like the pause before glass shatters.
Then the stream ended.
And everything exploded.
Within minutes, social media turned vicious.
Bella’s name climbed to the top of every trending list, tangled in insults and accusations. People called her foolish. Ungrateful. Proud. Dangerous. Some said she had no right to refuse money when families depended on it. Others claimed she was hiding secrets. Anonymous accounts hinted she was being controlled by powerful men who didn’t want Victor’s influence near her.
The story twisted faster than truth could chase it.
Bella sat in her office, watching the comments roll in, one after another, like waves crashing without mercy. Her hands were folded tightly in her lap. Her jaw ached from how hard she clenched it.
She had expected resistance.
She had not expected how fast the knives came out.
Victor had prepared this down to the minute.
By noon, the first donor pulled out.
The email was polite.
By one o’clock, another followed.
By three, the headlines changed tone.
“BELLA REJECTS BILLIONS BUT AT WHAT COST?”
She stared at the screen until the words blurred.
Her door opened without a knock.
Marcus walked in and closed it behind him.
The air shifted immediately, like a wall rising between her and the storm outside.
“You did the right thing,” he said.
Bella let out a slow breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. “It doesn’t feel that way.”
“It won’t,” Marcus replied. “Not today.”
He placed a thick folder on her desk. “I moved emergency funding into the foundation. Quietly”
Bella looked up sharply. “Marcus, you can’t….”
“I already did,” he said calmly. “Six months of stability. Enough to keep programs running while this storm burns itself out.”
Her throat tightened. “That puts you directly in Victor’s path.”
Marcus’s expression hardened. “I’ve been in his path long before you.”
She stared at him, torn between gratitude and fear. “This could hurt you.”
He met her gaze. “Then it hurts me.”
Elsewhere, Nathaniel was already bracing for impact.
His conference room was small. The team around him was unfamiliar on purpose, no names Victor could predict, no histories he could exploit easily. Files were spread across the table.
“She’s exposed,” one attorney said carefully. “Public opinion is turning.”
Nathaniel nodded once. “Then we control the ground beneath her.”
“She rejected a powerful man.”
“She rejected control,” Nathaniel corrected. “That’s what terrifies them.”
When Bella called him later that evening, her voice was calm, but exhaustion weighed every word.
“They’re saying I’m reckless,” she said quietly.
“They always question women’s judgment,” Nathaniel replied. “Especially when they stand alone.”
There was a brief silence.
“I won’t let him touch Clara,” Bella said. “I won’t let my daughter become leverage.”
“He won’t,” Nathaniel said firmly. “Not legally.”
“And outside the law?”
Nathaniel exhaled. “That’s where Victor lives.”
That night, Victor watched the chaos unfold with a glass of dark liquor in his hand.
Bella had refused him.
Good.
Refusal meant pressure. Pressure revealed cracks.
“She chose her line,” Elena said, sitting across from him. “Now she’ll bleed for it.”
Victor smiled faintly. “No. She’ll harden.”
Elena scoffed. “You give her too much credit.”
Victor turned his head slowly, studying her. “You underestimate her. Just like you underestimate pain.”
He tapped his glass once against the table. “It’s time she understood consequences.”
The next morning, Bella arrived at the foundation to raised voices and flashing phones.
Protestors lined the sidewalk. Some held signs praising her courage. Others accused her of hypocrisy and greed. Questions were shouted in her direction. Accusations followed.
She didn’t stop.
She walked straight through the noise, her back straight, her face calm.
Inside, her staff waited, tense and uncertain.
“She’s holding,” someone whispered as Bella entered.
Bella lifted her chin. “So are we.”
By midday, Marcus’s company stock dipped not enough to cause panic, but enough to send a message. Analysts blamed associative risk. Investors were nervous.
Nathaniel noticed immediately.
“He’s pressuring Marcus through you,” Nathaniel said on the phone. “And me through Marcus.”
Bella closed her eyes. “So everyone pays.”
“Yes,” Nathaniel said. “Unless we stay aligned.”
That word lingered between them.
Aligned.
That evening, Victor made his move.
No press. No public attack.
Just a phone call.
Bella stared at the unfamiliar number for several seconds before answering.
“Bella,” Victor said smoothly. “I admire your resolve.”
She said nothing.
“I wanted to speak directly,” he continued. “I’m disappointed, but not surprised.”
“What do you want?” she asked flatly.
“To prevent confusion,” Victor replied. “When people refuse help, the world becomes curious.”
A cold sensation slid down her spine.
“I’d hate for misunderstandings to grow,” Victor added softly.
“What misunderstandings?” Bella asked.
A pause.
Carefully timed.
“The night you spent with Nathaniel,” Victor said quietly.
Bella’s breath hitched.
“Private moments,” Victor continued, “have a way of becoming public stories. Ms Bella having affair with two brother to save her organization.”
Her fingers tightened around the phone. “You’re threatening me.”
“I’m offering clarity,” Victor corrected. “Think of the headlines. The questions. The damage not just to you, but to Marcus and Your ex, Nathaniel. To your foundation. To everything you’ve built.”
Silence stretched
.
“You won’t do it,” Bella said.
Victor’s smile was audible. “I won’t need to, if you reconsider.”
The call ended.
Bella stood frozen, the phone still pressed to her ear. Her heart raced with fury.
