Chapter 87: Alliance
Chapter 87: Alliance
The news broke before Bella even finished waking up.
Her phone wouldn’t stop vibrating on the nightstand. The sound cut through the early morning silence again and again, sharp and urgent. Bella reached for it with sleepy panic already crawling up her spine.
Her first thought was Clara.
She sat up too fast, heart racing, fingers shaking as she unlocked the screen.
Missed calls.
Messages.
News alerts.
Too many.
Bella’s chest tightened. She scanned the notifications quickly, searching for anything familiar, then she saw the headline.
“VICTOR HALE HOLDINGS AND ELENA CONFIRM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE”
Bella froze.
For a second, the words didn’t make sense. Her mind rejected them the way it rejected bad dreams. Then reality hit her all at once, heavy and sharp.
She clicked the article.
The photo loaded first.
Victor and Elena stood side by side on the steps of a private courthouse. Victor looked calm, confident, dressed in a dark suit that screamed control. Elena stood close to him, one hand resting lightly on his arm. Her smile was smooth, practiced, and dangerous.
They looked united.
Bella swallowed hard, she scrolled.
Victor called it a consolidation of vision.
There were no other name mentioned.
But everyone who see this knew exactly this isn't good, it's dangerous.
Bella lowered the phone slowly and stared at the wall ahead of her. Her heart beat hard, but her thoughts were clear in a way that scared her.
Elena watched the reaction roll in with satisfaction warming her chest.
She stood near the wide windows of Victor’s penthouse, city lights fading as morning crept in. She wore silk, her hair perfectly styled, her makeup flawless even this early. A glass of champagne rested in her hand, untouched.
“They’re calling me the strategist,” Elena said lightly. “interesting.”
Victor stood nearby, calm as ever, scrolling through his tablet.
“They need a story,” he said. “You give them one.”
Victor turned toward him, her smile sharp. “Marcus won’t survive this.”
She said it with confidence, not hope.
“He’s predictable,” she continued. “Careful. Emotional when it matters most. He tries to be fair in an unfair world.”
Victor looked up at her. “And you think that will destroy him?”
“I know it will,” Elena replied. “He built rules. I know where they break.”
Victor studied her quietly.
Elena mistook his silence for agreement. She took a slow sip of champagne, enjoying the moment.
What she didn’t see was the calculation behind Victor’s eyes.
To him, Elena wasn’t a partners.
She was a tool.
And tools were only valuable while they served a purpose.
By the time Bella arrived at her nonprofit’s headquarters, the tension was already thick.
People whispered in corners. Staff members pretended to work while watching her closely. Her assistant followed her into the building, speaking in a low voice.
“Board members are asking for an emergency meeting,” she said. “Two donors paused funding this morning. They said they need clarity.”
Bella nodded calmly, though her stomach was tight.
“I’ll handle it,” she said.
Inside her office, Bella closed the door and leaned against it for a moment. She closed her eyes, breathing slowly, grounding herself.
This organization wasn’t just work.
It was purpose.
She had built it from grief and survival, turned pain into protection for women and children who had no safety net. Clara’s name was on its walls. Clara’s future was tied to it.
Victor knew that.
Her phone rang.
Marcus.
“Have you read the News lately,” he said the moment she answered.
Bella walked to her desk. “I saw it.”
“Elena believes Victor will destroy everything,” Marcus continued. “but all I see is Victor manipulating my mother.”
Bella exhaled slowly. “And why do you believe so?”
There was a pause.
“I believe Victor wants something else,” Marcus said carefully.
Bella’s fingers tightened around the phone. “what could he want.”
“He wants you.”
The word settled in her chest like a weight.
Bella closed her eyes. “Then he’s mistaken”
She ended the call and stepped into the conference room. Her senior team was waiting. Faces tense. Expectant.
They were looking to her for answers.
Bella looked at them and understood something deeply unsettling.
This wasn’t about Marcus anymore.
It wasn’t about Nathaniel.
It wasn’t even about Elena.
Victor was changing the board.
And she was no longer standing on the edge of it.
At noon, Victor held a press briefing.
Bella watched it live from her office, arms crossed, her posture calm even though her heart beat hard.
Victor stood before a polished backdrop, his voice smooth and warm, carefully designed to inspire trust.
“In the spirit of global responsibility,” Victor said, “Hale International is expanding its humanitarian reach.”
Bella felt a chill crawl up her spine.
“We are offering to absorb select nonprofit organizations whose missions align with our values,” Victor continued. “This allows them access to global resources and long-term sustainability.”
Bella already knew.
Victor smiled slightly.
“One such organization is The Clara Foundation.”
The room exploded.
Reporters shouted. Cameras flashed. Analysts immediately praised the move online, calling it generous, visionary, inevitable.
Bella stared at the screen.
Absorb.
That word meant control.
Victor wasn’t trying to shut her down.
He was trying to own her.
Her phone rang again.
Nathaniel.
“He’s forcing you into a corner,” he said quietly.
Bella watched Victor shake hands with donors on screen. “He’s doing it like he’s saving us.”
“That’s how power always hides,” Nathaniel replied.
Bella straightened. “He thinks I’ll accept.”
There was silence.
“Will you?” Nathaniel asked.
Bella looked at her reflection in the dark screen of her laptop. She looked tired. But she didn’t look afraid.
“No,” she said. “But I’ll let him believe I might.”
She ended the call and turned to her team.
“Prepare a statement,” she said. “Grateful. Neutral. No commitment.”
They hesitated.
Bella met their eyes. “This is not surrender. It’s time.”
They nodded.
The statement went out within the hour.
Victor watched it and
smiled.
“Good,” he murmured. “She’s accepting.”
Elena stepped beside him, uneasy now. “You’re pushing her too far.”
Victor didn’t look at her. “I’m shaping the outcome.”
Elena’s confidence wavered.
