Chapter 252
Chapter 252
Annie stepped out from behind me and threw a copy of the account book she had found earlier straight at Scarlett's face. "What you're doing is illegal. This is all evidence, and I'm calling the police! This time, no matter how powerful your connections are, you won't get away so easily!"
But Scarlett ignored her, staring at me instead. "This time, I won't let you get away."
She looked at me like I was prey, her eyes gleaming with greed, as if she was about to drain my blood dry the next second.
A chill crept from the soles of my feet through my entire body.
This woman had completely lost her mind.
"How exactly did I end up being trafficked here back then?" I asked coldly. "My mother getting hurt—that was you too, wasn't it?"
Scarlett looked at me with a half-smile. She didn't answer, just put her hands behind her back.
My eyelid twitched. An uneasy feeling spread through my chest.
Suddenly!
A piercing alarm blared through the lab. The lab workers immediately started retreating.
The liquid in the cultivation chambers was draining. The figures lying inside slowly stood up, turning their bodies, their eyes staring straight at me.
These people were clearly alive, but they gave me the feeling of the living dead. Especially their eyes—black and hollow, terrifyingly empty.
This was bad. I said to Liam, "Grab her! She's going to run!"
Without waiting, I ignored the threats and sprinted straight toward Scarlett.
Scarlett reacted quickly, stepping back just in time to get behind the security door one step ahead of me. She looked at me smugly. "Since you're forcing my hand, don't blame me for what happens next."
Through the glass, she said slowly, "This is the feast I prepared for you. Soon, you'll be one of them. Your blood will feed many people. Enjoy."
Fury filled my eyes. I raised my fist and slammed it against the glass.
The glass made a dull thud but showed no sign of cracking.
Damn it!
I couldn't help cursing. "What really happened back then! Why was I trafficked!"
Scarlett flashed a wicked smile. "I'll tell you—if you survive."
Just then, a loud bang came from behind me.
The glass made a deafening noise.
I instinctively looked and saw a round mark on it, but the glass still hadn't broken.
I glanced at Liam. He'd pulled out a weapon and aimed right where Scarlett had been standing.
"I won't let you hurt her," Liam said coldly, his voice hoarse with pain. "Mom, please stop."
"I contacted the police before we came. If we don't come out in an hour, they'll force their way in."
"By now, they should have surrounded this place. You can't escape."
Scarlett looked at Liam. Her crazed expression softened a bit. She shook her head, smiling bitterly. "Liam, it's not that I don't want to stop. It's that there's no turning back now."
"Besides," she murmured, "I did all this for you."
"I don't need it!" Liam roared. He shouted, helpless and breaking down, "Why don't you ever consider what I want!"
"I don't want Sophia's life in exchange for mine. If that's what it takes, I'd rather die."
"Mom!" He raised his voice, nearly breaking down, then softened it, pleading, "Turn yourself in. I'm begging you."
Scarlett looked at Liam, conflicted.
I stood to the side, saying nothing but feeling anxious.
These blank-faced people were slowly moving toward me.
I instinctively sensed danger.
But right now Liam and Scarlett were in a standoff, and I couldn't interrupt.
Just as the tension held, the door suddenly burst open.
A loud crash.
It was Patrick!
My eyes lit up. Relief washed over me.
Behind him were police officers, weapons drawn, filing in, shouting at Scarlett, "Hands up! Get down! Nobody move!"
But except for Annie and me, no one moved.
Especially these strange people—they kept moving toward me, even faster than before.
Patrick looked anxious and instinctively wanted to run to my side.
Liam looked worried too.
I knew what he was worried about.
They'd been so close to convincing Scarlett. Now with all these people bursting in, Scarlett might change her mind.
Sure enough.
Seeing so many people burst in, the hesitation in Scarlett's eyes vanished, replaced by ruthlessness and determination.
She turned and ran toward the corridor.
"Mom!" Liam shouted. He kept pounding the glass, hoping to change Scarlett's mind.
But Scarlett didn't react. She walked toward the other end of the corridor without looking back.
Behind us, the police had rushed over.
These unknown people Scarlett had cultivated went crazy, biting at everything.
They didn't have much fighting power, but one thing about them was really troublesome.
They didn't feel pain.
Their pain nerves seemed completely blocked. Unless you killed them, there was no way to stop them.
The police were forced to keep retreating. Finally, with no choice, they had to use ropes to tie them up.
Several people got injured in the process.
I looked at the now-empty corridor unwillingly. "She got away!"
Liam's expression was complicated.
But Patrick shook his head. "Who says she got away?"
"Look carefully!"
As he spoke, I looked at the corridor, confused.
I saw Scarlett being forcibly brought back by two bodyguards in black.
My eyes lit up. I looked at Patrick instinctively, asking happily, "You already arranged this?"
Patrick nodded. "I knew she was cunning and would definitely have a backup plan, so I arranged people to block her from behind, just to prevent her from sneaking away."
I breathed a sigh of relief.
The glass door was opened from the other side by the bodyguards.
Scarlett was dragged in, looking resentful.
I quickly walked up to her. "We meet again. This time, you can tell me the truth about what happened back then, right?"
"Let go of me!" Scarlett demanded coldly. "If you don't let me go, I won't say anything."
After hearing this, I didn't immediately agree but looked at Patrick.
I wasn't being overly cautious—Scarlett had too many tricks. Who could be sure what she'd do next?
Patrick hesitated, but still nodded in agreement.
The bodyguards let go of Scarlett. She shook off their hold and rubbed her injuries.
She looked at everyone and raised an eyebrow. "You all want to know?"
