This is my chance!
This is my chance!
Sonia
After we got back from the conference, I had the chef prepare my favorite and I had a great time enjoying it. When I was done, I had some fun in the bathtub. I kept replaying the scene at the conference where I answered the question. The confidence had come from nowhere and that one moment changed everything for me. A lot of them that didn't really give me attention when I arrived changed once they heard me speak. And by the time we were done, they all wanted to connect with me. Thankfully, Claire already gave me a heads-up on what to expect and how to handle it, and I did just that.
Once I was done dressing in the closet, I went out and went straight to the dressing mirror. I just stood there and admired the woman staring back at me. The new me that had just been built from scratch. My phone started to ring then and that was what brought me back to life.
I grabbed it and saw Nolan’s name lit up the screen. I cleared my throat, tried not to sound too eager.
“Hello?” I let out softly.
“Come outside,” he said simply. His tone was soft too, but I was a bit curious since he didn't say why or what I was coming to do.
“I just hope everything is fine,” I muttered under my breath as I made my way downstairs.
Some of the maids were scattered around, and I observed their faces, trying to see if I could pick something from their expressions, but it was all blank. Of course, they were surprised to see me rushing downstairs when I could have called one of them to get whatever I wanted for me. Still no one asked questions.
I finally opened the door and the first thing that caught my eye was the glossy sleek car. It was a brand new one, and I just couldn't get over the beauty. I don't need to be told how much fortune was lavished on getting it.
Nolan was standing beside it with a grin plastered on his face. He watched as my eyes feasted on the car and I could tell he got the expression he wanted.
“Do you like it?” he finally asked and with a smile that showed he already knew the answer.
“I… what is this?” my mouth parted a little, trying to come up with more words, but I couldn't.
“A car,” he said plainly.
“And it’s yours,” he added, and I turned to him sharply.
“But the garage… there are plenty of cars…”
“Yes,” he cut in.
“And you're absolutely free to use them all, but the problem with that is, they aren’t yours. You need something that carries your name and if you’re going to step into this new life, you should have a vehicle that reflects it,” he explained, and for a second, I could only stare. It wasn’t the gift that stunned me, it was the thought behind it.
“Oh my God, I'm so happy, I really don't know what to say right now.” I chimed in as I moved closer to the car and started checking it out.
“Wait till you see this then,” he replied as he pulled out something else. I turned and saw him holding a white envelope.
“What’s that?” I quizzed while he handed it to me.
“Open it and see for yourself,” he said, and I shot him a curious look before I tore open the envelope.
I froze the moment I saw the black card. I have never owned one, but I definitely know what it means. I looked at Nolan again, unable to believe that I had just gotten access to unlimited spending with my name embossed in silver.
“Nolan…” I called while my fingers trembled.
“You’ll need it,” he said, straightening his cuffs like it was the most normal thing in the world.
“There will be events, appearances, things you’ll want to do or buy without asking anyone for permission. I don’t want you depending on me for every little thing,” he explained while I laughed softly under my breath. I was actually still shocked and only used the laugh to cover up.
“And this is supposed to make me less dependent?” I didn't even know I was thinking out loud until he replied me.
“It gives you freedom. Use it however you need.” He chimed in, and I swallowed the lump rising in my throat and forced myself to breathe.
“Thank you,” I managed, because anything else would have sounded ungrateful.
“Yeah,” he nodded and then walked away.
I went back inside too, and when the door shut behind me upstairs, I finally exhaled. I looked down at the card again. I have my car keys in my palm too.
Nolan just handed me unlimited funds and a luxury car with my name on both.
He said he didn’t want me to depend on him, but it's just a lie and we both know it.
In every arrangement, the person with the least money would always depend on the person with the most. The person with the least power would always bow to the one who had it.
In our case, I am the one with lesser power. Yes, I have a title now and access too, but at the end of the day, I am still under Nolan. He knows it and I also know it.
“But that doesn't mean you have to stay that way, right Sonia?” I muttered to myself as I ran my thumb across the black card again, slower this time.
I'm not going to just spend and waste this. I am going to build something of my own that wouldn't disappear if Nolan ever wakes up one morning and decides I don't fit into his plans anymore.
Those elite women I met today will be the key I use. I'll get deep into their circle and use that connection and network to my advantage. With it, I'll create a business that stands on its own legs, and my bake.
Nolan gave me the tools to become a perfect wife on paper. He doesn't know he has also given me the resources to become a woman who will never kneel again… not to him or anyone else.
This is my chance…
