The billionaire Kane's wife!

The billionaire Kane's wife!
Sonia
I woke up to the sound of voices in my room and my first thought was that I was dreaming. The sound was so soothing, and I was just going to enjoy the dream until I heard a familiar voice.
“She’s awake,” the voice sounded so hard and that made me open my eyes.
I blinked up to see Claire standing near the dressing table. Two other women were unpacking boxes, laying out brushes, palettes, and there were dresses on a rack too.
“What’s going on?” I asked, pushing myself up while still half-dazed.
Claire turned with that calm, efficient smile she always wore when she was on duty. “Good morning, Mrs. Kane. There’s a conference this afternoon and Nolan wants you there. These are your stylist and makeup artist. We need to start now,” she explained while I rubbed my eyes.
“A conference? What kind of conference?” I quizzed.
“The kind you need to attend if you want to be taken seriously in his world,” she said simply.
“It’s a closed event which will have the likes of business elites, investors’ wives, the big women of society in attendance. You need to be seen among them. You need to learn their rhythm and language,” she explained while I just sat there for a second, watching her move around the room with so much aura.
“So, basically… no pressure.” I finally found my voice while her lips curved faintly.
“Exactly,” she affirmed, and I almost laughed, but instead I nodded.
“Fine. Do whatever you have to do,” I retorted, and that was all the permission they needed.
They got to work and for the next two hours, I just sat there while they went a boot their thing.
The makeup artist was really nice and gentle, and even explained everything she was doing, though I barely heard the words as her voice was really low.
The stylist took over once makeup and hair were done. When they finally stepped back, Claire handed me a mirror and I barely recognized the woman staring back.
My skin was glowing, my eyes looked sharper, colder. My hair was a glossy wave that fell perfectly over one shoulder. The white fitted dress they chose molded to me like it was my second skin. It was really elegant, simple but screamed expensive.
I hurried to the giant mirror for a full look and, oh my goodness, I looked… rich and I'm not even talking just in money now, but in aura.
Claire stood behind me, meeting my gaze in the reflection.
“This is the woman they need to see. Nolan’s wife. The sophisticated, composed and commanding woman who knows her worth so always remember that.” She chimed in while I swallowed hard and nodded.
“I can do that.”
“You will… because the car’s already waiting.” she replied as she checked her watch.
The two women were already done packing their things, so Claire dismissed them.
Claire and I also made our way outside where a sleek black car was already waiting in the driveway, with the driver standing by the door. Claire walked beside me, phone in hand, already talking to someone about schedules and seating arrangements.
I paused for a moment before getting in, taking one last look at the reflection on the tinted window.
Sonia Wesson, the desperate woman who begged for mercy in a prison cell, was gone.
In her place stood Mrs. Sonia Kane, the woman the world is about to meet.
I slid into the car, smoothed my dress, and watched as the gates opened slowly ahead of us.
The car ride felt endless, and by the time we pulled up in front of the grand conference hall, my palms were already damp. There were black cars lined up in front, all luxury.
The building itself was all shades of luxury and staring at the elegant architectural beauty, I couldn't help but straighten my posture.
Claire got out first, her heels clicking against the marble steps, and I followed, adjusting the sleeve of my gown. From the second we stepped in, I knew I wasn’t just walking into a room, I was stepping into an entirely different universe.
The women around me looked like they were carved out of old money, every one of them perfectly polished, from the soft curls in their hair to the diamonds that sparkled on their wrists. Their laughter was low and their gestures controlled. It seemed so natural to them like they weren't trying to be noticed like me and, for a moment, that got to me.
I froze, and my throat tightened as I glanced around, the little voice in my head whispering that I didn’t belong here. That they could tell and somehow, they could see through the silk and the makeup and smell my past in my body.
Claire must have seen the hesitation in my eyes because she leaned in slightly then.
“Don’t shrink. You have to walk like you’ve owned rooms like this your whole life. Trust me, no one will know, because the only thing that can give you away is doubt,” she whispered, but her tone was firm. I could also hear the love in her words, it was like a mentor reminding me who I needed to become.
“Okay.” I nodded and then took a slow breath.
“Good, so shoulders back and now go make them wonder who you are.” she smiled faintly.
We entered the main room, and it was breathtaking. There were crystal chandeliers, white orchids everywhere, and tables arranged in neat circles. A soft murmur filled the air as waiters moved around with champagne. The women were greeting one another, laughing in soft tones and gentle smiles.
I took a seat beside Claire, pretending I knew exactly what I was doing. She whispered quick pointers now and then, like who to smile at, when to nod, when not to.
The program started then, and it was a panel of some of the most powerful women in the country. They talked about leadership, influence, wealth, and the responsibility that came with power.
And surprisingly, I enjoyed it. I found myself leaning forward, actually interested in their discussions, especially the parts about resilience and image.
These women weren’t just rich, they were strategic and every move they made was intentional, and for the first time, I understood why Nolan wanted me here.
Then, out of nowhere, one of the moderators changed the flow of things.
“We’d love to hear from someone in the audience, perhaps the lady in white?” she let out, and it took me a second to realize I was the lady in white.
“Me?” I mouthed to Claire, eyes wide while my heart dropped into my stomach.
“Go on,” she whispered with a calm smile while giving me a tiny nudge under the table.
I stood up slowly, clutching the microphone they passed to me, and my voice almost failed me at first. The question was about what true power meant to a woman in a man’s world.
My fingers trembled a bit, but I took a breath and as I looked around the room and saw their sharp and expectant faces, a bit of confidence suddenly in me. I knew this was the time to get them to see me and make them wonder who I am.
“First I want to commend everyone who has given their opinion. I enjoyed every bit and can say my perspective has been further enlightened.” I paused just for effect and then continued immediately.
“For me, power isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s the quiet things like the way you hold yourself when no one believes in you. The way you rebuild when life knocks you down and expects you to stay there. Real power isn’t about controlling others, it’s about mastering yourself...” I went on and on, while the room went still.
I hadn’t planned to say any of that. It just came out straight from a place I hadn’t touched in a long time. I spoke from my past loss and the determination to rise again.
When I finally stopped and sat down, the whole hall roared with applause. I turned to Claire, and she gave me a small, approving smile.
“Now that is how you make an entrance without anyone realizing it.” she whispered, and she was so right.
No one in that room knew I was Nolan Kane’s wife. To them, I was just a woman in white with a voice that made them listen and, for the first time in years, I felt seen for me.
Not for my past mistakes or even the billionaire Kane's wife, but just for the woman I’d become.
