Chapter 16 Chapter 16
Savannah sat on the hospital bed, staring at the white walls. She felt small in the large room. The smell of medicine filled the air. Her body was weak, but her mind was awake. She could not stop thinking about her life. About Nathaniel. About the baby.
Adrian walked in holding a small bag. “I brought you some food,” he said. “You need to eat.”
She blinked. “Why are you helping me? You don’t even know me.”
Adrian pulled the chair closer. “I don’t need to know you. I saw a woman fainting on the street. I couldn’t just walk away. And now I know you’re pregnant. That makes it even worse.”
Savannah lowered her eyes. Shame burned inside her. “I don’t deserve kindness.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Don’t say that. You deserve better than working until you faint.”
Her hands shook as she took the food. She whispered, “Thank you.”
They ate in silence. Adrian kept looking at her. She was young, too young to carry so much pain. He could tell she was hiding a story, but he didn’t press her. Not yet.
After eating, Savannah leaned back, her eyelids heavy. Adrian stood and pulled the blanket over her. She stirred and mumbled, “Please… don’t let them find me.”
Adrian frowned. “Them? Who?”
But Savannah had already drifted into sleep.
That night, Adrian stepped outside the hospital. He stood near his car, staring at the city lights. His mind replayed her words. Don’t let them find me. Who was she running from? Why was she alone?
He clenched his fists. “Whoever left her like this will pay,” he muttered.
Meanwhile, at Nathaniel’s mansion, Cassandra unpacked her clothes in the master bedroom. Vanessa sat on the bed, sipping wine.
“So,” Vanessa smirked, “you’re really moving in.”
Cassandra laughed softly. “Nathaniel said it himself. I’m the one he loves. Soon I’ll be the only woman here.”
Vanessa clapped her hands. “Good. Once Savannah signs those papers, the company shares will be easy to control.”
Cassandra’s smile turned sharp. “She ran away, but she won’t run forever. And when she comes back, she’ll find nothing left for her. Not even that baby she claims to carry.”
Vanessa raised a brow. “Are you sure she’s pregnant?”
Cassandra rolled her eyes. “Two years of marriage and no child. She’s barren. She’s lying.” They both burst into laughter.
Back at the hospital, Savannah tossed in her sleep. She dreamed of Nathaniel’s face, cold and cruel, handing her divorce papers. She dreamed of Cassandra’s mocking smile. She woke with a gasp, clutching her stomach.
Adrian rushed in. “What is it?”
Her face was pale. “I dreamed… they found me.”
Adrian sat beside her, his voice firm. “Listen. You are safe here. As long as I’m around, no one will touch you.”
Savannah stared at him, unsure if she could believe those words. But his eyes were steady, and for the first time in weeks, she felt a small drop of peace.
She closed her eyes again, whispering, “Please… don’t leave me.”
Adrian promised softly, “I won’t.”
