Chapter 71 Chapter 71
Selena
I have always hated the rain.
That day, when he had taken me against my wish, or the nights after.
The night Noah cheated, or the night when I was handed the contract. It all rained heavily.
And today it was raining heavily. My clothes drenched, tears flowing down my face as I walked into the same apartment Ipromisednever to return to.
This time, he was my only hope.
My last hope of saving Josh.
If Josh ends up being involved in the crime, then I’ll bail him out. And to do so, I needed all the power I could get.
That’s why I was here. Noah would help. He was close to Josh when we were together.
He would be upset if he heard Josh was locked up. He will do anything in his power to free himself.
I believed Noah, though he may be a jerk, he wasn't heartless.
And…and he was the only one I had now.
I couldn't go to the strange lady, to ask her for this.
God, I didn't even know her identity yet, so how could I lay my brother's life in her hands?
What would she ask in return this time? To kill Theodore? A suicide mission?
My legs trembled as I stepped out from the elevator, reaching Noah’s door, I knocked.
What if he was with a woman?
For some reason, he hasn't been disturbing me since that night that I left his place.
Yet I was back to him.
I knocked again, my body trembling.
Please.
Please.
Please.
My heart echoed with the night rain.
What if he wasn't home? I have tried calling his number before coming here, but nothing was going on.
I knocked again.
Please.
If there was any being out there. God. I’ve never been religious, father never introduced us to one. But if there was any God out there, please help my brother.
I closed my eyes, and just then the door opened.
“Jesus Christ, Selena, what are you doing here?” Noah looked me downward, his eyes shocked to see me.
“I..I —”
“You aren't talking here, come in.” His hand reached for mine and he dragged me inside.
The coldness of my body is enveloped in warmth by his house. It was the same as before.
Noah walked inside, leaving me at the entrance. Soon, he was back with a long towel. He placed it on my head, cleaning me up.
“I don't know if you enjoy being wet from the rain. I’ve told you before, you should avoid the rain if you hate it, and if it hurts you. Why don't you listen?”
I should avoid it if it hurts me?
I have always hated the rain, but I could never avoid it.
How could I avoid it when Josh was locked?
In the darkness of the towel covering my eyes, more tears flowed down my face.
“Noah, please help Joshua.” I looked at him as he removed the towel.
His face frowned. “What do you mean? What happened to Josh?”
I hiccupped, cleaning my face. “Josh is framed for drugs and..and gang something. The police won’t let me see him, they won’t let me see the prosecutor in charge. I told them, I told them he would never do something so deadly, but they —”
“Hey hey, Selena. Calm down.” He held my shoulders.
It was tight. My throat was tight. Too tight, my heart. Everything was so heavy.
“Calm down Selena. I understand everything you said, so calm down. Come, let me fix you tea.” He started dragging my hand, and I pulled off.
“This isn't the time for tea.” I couldn't see him fully. My sight was blurry. “Look Noah, I need to speak to Josh. I need to hear from him. What if..what if they have done something to him?”
“Josh is fine, I promise. I’ll make a few calls and then you’ll be able to speak to him. No matter if he did it or not, I’ll bail him out, so stop worrying.”
My eyes widened, a spark of hope branding my heart. “You would do that?” I asked.
“I can, come,”
I let him hold my hand as he took me to the couch to sit.
My legs still trembled even when he placed the towel on them, then he knelt before me.
“I’m going to make a call now, please don't cry. It hurts to see you this way.” His hand reached for my face, but I moved, making it fall.
He smiled. “I’ll be back.” He stood up.
My leg tapped anxiously on the floor as I waited and soon he came back, carrying a cup.
“Here.” He reached me and I collected it. Waiting for him to give me the information that I wanted.
Instead of talking, he knelt..
“What happened? Were you able to speak to the person? What did he say?” I asked, feeling the warmth of the cup.
He nodded. “He’ll be getting back to me soon.”
“Really?” My face broke into a smile, and he returned it.
I knew I could trust him. I took a sip from the tea. My mouth warm.
“But Selena,”
My eyes snapped to him, now alert at his hands on my knee, drawing circles around it.
“As much as I care about Josh, you know I’ll never do anything to dirty my hands,”
My brows furrowed. “What do you mean? You know Josh would never engage in something like that.” Annoyance was building in my heart.
“Listen, I get you, but the police won’t frame him, knowing how sensitive this was. So for him to be in their custody, that means he must have been involved.”
My anger tipped off. “How could you say something li —”
“I’ll take him out no matter what, even if he is guilty.”
I swallowed my words. My heart eased at his words.
He looked down at my knee, trailing them. “But Selena, I’ll only be doing this for a term.”
I stopped, our eyes locked as he looked up.
Why did I think he changed?
I licked my lips. “What do you want?” I asked, but I knew. And it sent dread to my stomach.
“You know what I want, Selena.” His hand moved upward on my thighs, and my skin bit back at me, his touch unbearable.
“Be mine, Selena. Your body, your work, everything.” His hand now moves deeper inside my skirt, close to my sex.
I inhaled.
It seemed I made a mistake in trusting that Noah had changed.
How dare he crush my hope?
“Bastard.” I poured the hot coffee on him and he screamed, falling backward.
“You should die in hell.”
I stormed out of his apartment, into the cold rain.
I looked up into the sky.
“How unlucky.”
My phone vibrated in my pocket, I rushed for it, hoping it was a message from the station.
“Have you resolved the reason why you left your boss?”
It was Theodore.
A message of concern. But then it became a trigger to my memories.
“Be mine, Selena, and I’ll give you everything you want.”
