Chapter 100 Chapter 100
Selena
“This isn't right, Svetlana,” I said as soon as we were provided a dressing room.
Svetlana placed all the clothes on a couch before facing me.
“That’s how the boss works, Ms Selena.” She doesn't look surprised. “Though it’s a pity that it'll be hard for her to get a job from now on, she’s lucky that’s how she is being punished.”
“What?” If this was considered lucky, then how bad can it be?
Svetlana fidgeted with her fingers, as if contemplating whether she should speak.
“Speak, Svetlana. What do you mean by, ‘she is lucky?”
Svetlana looked at me, her face helpless, and for a moment I didn't want to put her in a spot but I needed to know.
“In some unlucky cases, the boss could get them locked up, and…” She held herself again. My fingers hooked
“Speak, I won’t say it again,” I commanded. Knowing that would only make her open up.
“There was once a worker who spoke crudely to Ms Hannah, boss Theodore got her tongue pulled out, and then it was stitched back. Rumors then had it that he pulled the tongue out himself, with the medical team nearby. She also lost her job after that. She wasn't blacklisted.”
I felt my legs weaken, hearing Svetlana. It wasn't possible.
Yes, it was. This was Theodore Mateo we are talking about.
“Everyone knows not to cross paths with the boss. I think she’s only being blacklisted because of you right now. That’s why she is lucky. Please check the dresses.”
My stomach churned, suddenly hurting so badly as I listened to everything. My mouth turned bitter, and I felt nauseous.
I closed my eyes to stop the images threatening to fill my head.
Just then, my phone rang.
I opened my eyes and took it out of my purse. It was the lady.
I licked my lips, my heart uneased.
“Give me a minute, Svetlana. I need to pick this.”
“But you have t—”
I don't wait for her to complete her words before walking out of the room.
I didn't just want to pick up the call, but also to leave the room, which turned suffocating, choking.
I don't know where I was going, but I needed the stairs. Anything that would maybe lead to the roof. Right now I just wanted to be there.
I took the elevator, pressing the top floor button, the phone in my hand.
“God,” I muttered as I held the phone to my chest.
Why am I this shaken up, when this had been him all along? I must have been so blinded by his affection that I almost thought he was a saint.
I finally reached the door, and I gasped at the fresh air on the rooftop. I answered the call.
“I thought you wouldn’t be picking up.” Her voice came.
I licked my lips, then forced a smile like she was here with me. “Ha ha. No, I just got a bit busy. Why did you call?” I asked, laughing.
Her end was silent like she was alone. But then, it has always been like that.
Just who was she? A cop? But that wasn't possible, because she seemed to know a lot about Theo.
“I called to congratulate you.”
I raised my brows.
“For your first successful task. The document you brought from his place is being used right now. As expected, it carries details. A bonus had been sent to you, and a car was delivered to your apartment. Your brother and friend should be calling you soon.”
My free hand gripped the hem of my shirt. Last time in his place, I was able to obtain the document inside the safe.
To avoid getting caught, I took photos of all the documents and sent them to her. It seemed it had found its use.
But why don’t I feel happy? I have even gotten money and a new car.
“Thank you for the offer, but it’ll be too suspicious for me to have another car. I think you should take it back.”
“No, Selena. Given your family background at the company, your family can afford a few cars. I was inconsiderate for not thinking that at first. Let’s make it this way now, for the next two months, I’ll give you two cars, what do you think?” She was too excited. More happy than I have ever heard her.
What was the document for? What did she do with it?
“I …. I don't need the cars. I’ll do my best these remaining two months.” I said.
Yes, there are just two months left and then I'll be done.
With all the money I have gotten from her and even the company, plus I could sell the two cars I have now, then I’ll get a shop and start a coffee and cakes shop.
With all the funding, it should boom soon.
She laughed from the other end, like I just said something funny.
“I heard Theodore took you to another country. I must say Selena, you are impressive, but don’t get too caught up, or else you’ll be entangled in his madness. Theodore is a mess, and he isn’t in his right senses.”
I felt a burst of anger rush through my veins. I didn’t like how she spoke, degrading Theodore.
“I’ll be careful,” I concluded.
“Do that. Now let’s wait for a positive outbreak.” With that, the call ended.
What does she mean by that?
I held the phone and stared at the building. What can I do? I heaved a deep breath.
I couldn’t speak to Theodore, not with the look he had given me when I tried to.
“Here you are,”
Theodore’s scent engulfed me, followed by his hands that wrapped around my waist. I am pulled backward, and my back meets his front.
“Who were you speaking to?”
My eyes widened. He must have heard me speak.
“Hm, my best friend, Halley. How long have you been here?” I stilled myself not to give away my state.
“Just now. Svetlana said you left to pick up a call.”
I sighed in relief. “Yes, Halley called.”
“Hmm,” He turned me around, facing him. “I’ll never let anyone hurt you, Selena. The day you accepted me, I vowed that to myself. I’ll destroy anyone who dares to hurt your feelings, even if it’s me. So, don’t hesitate to do anything, I’ll support you no matter what.”
My heart fell.
It was a confession. A dangerous confession.
My heart should fluttered, but for the first time, it tightened, looking at him.
