Chapter 271
He threw back the covers and looked down. The shock was so great that his hangover vanished in
an instant.
He wasn’t wearing anything…
What was worse, he realized with chilling clarity that he was in Maricela’s bedroom.
He was afraid to look, but he had to turn his head.
Sure enough, Maricela was lying next to him, the blanket only half–covering her, the exposed parts of her body bare…
His mind was a mess, but the first thing he did was quickly pull the blanket over Maricela.
Just as he was trying to remember what the hell happened last night, Harlan’s groggy voice came from outside, as if he had just woken up, “Cedrick!
Cedrick, where are you?
Mari?
Where are you guys?”
Cedrick panicked and got out of bed, accidentally knocking over a vase. Harlan followed the sound and came over.
“Ce…” Before he could even finish calling his name, he saw the situation with Cedrick and Maricela.
The color drained from Cedrick’s face. “No, I don’t know how…”
“Cedrick…” Maricela woke up then, as if startled by their noise. She suddenly realized the situation, screamed, and pulled the blanket tightly around herself, tears welling up in her eyes. “Cedrick…”
Cedrick’s head was buzzing.
It was already late when they got to Maricela’s house last night. Maricela was terrified from being robbed and couldn’t stop crying. Harlan ordered takeout for dinner and suggested they have a few drinks with Maricela, saying the alcohol would help her forget.

Who knew that once they started drinking, they couldn’t stop.

Plus, he had a ton of his own problems, so he didn’t hold back. But he never thought his tolerance was so low, he passed out quickly.
He remembered the last thing before he blacked out: Maricela had fallen into his arms, crying about how lonely, miserable, and scared she was.
He remembered patting her back to comfort her, but he couldn’t recall anything that happened
after that…
Now, Maricela was wrapped in the blanket, looking at him with teary eyes. “Cedrick, I don’t blame you, really. You were in a bad mood yesterday too. I just wanted to hug you, to comfort you, and then you…‘
Cedrick’s brow furrowed tightly.
He did seem to remember a hug, but after that, it was a complete blank…
He suddenly remembered that day five years ago, after Lucille’s surgery. The first thing she said to him when she woke up was: Cedrick, can you please not drink anymore?
A sudden wave of heartache washed over him.
He had promised her. He promised her he would never drink again, and he had actually kept that promise. For five years, he barely touched alcohol. Even when he was out with Harlan and the others, while they drank, he would just have a soft drink or coffee.
But now, five years later, he had broken his promise…
“Cedrick…” Maricela crawled to the edge of the bed, still wrapped in the blanket, and gently shook his hand. “Cedrick, don’t be upset. I won’t make you take responsibility. Let’s just pretend this never happened. Once we leave this room today, we’ll both forget about it. Don’t worry…”
“That’s enough.”
Harlan spoke up, “It already happened, and you can’t turn back time. Cedrick, Maricela hasn’t even said anything, so why are you looking so miserable?
For a successful man like you, who doesn’t have a mistress or a second family?
Besides, Maricela isn’t competing with Lucille for anything, and it’s not like you can’t afford it. Just keep living your life with Lucille and keep Maricela on the side. That way, if you ever get into a fight with Lucille, you’ll have somewhere else to go. Maricela will always be your confidante.”
