Chapter 254
“That’s different. You have to look at the year. When we were on a roll, you could naturally suppress her negative influence. But a person’s metaphysical fortune is fluid. After she slowly siphoned yours away, you were left with nothing but bad luck. Really, I specifically went to a fortune teller to have it checked out. This is the reason why we’ve had so much trouble this year.”
Seeing that Cedrick was still unconvinced, Harlan continued, “Tell me, why do forefathers said, ‘Happy wife, happy life.“?”

“When she wasn’t fighting you, you were fine. The moment she started causing trouble, your luck took a nosedive. ‘A peaceful home brings happiness to all.‘ This is the wisdom of our forefathers!”
“Alright, you keep an eye on things at the company. I have to go out.”
Cedrick stood up and, ignoring whatever Harlan was still saying behind him, walked out quickly, calling his driver as he went. “Did you go check Country Village?”
“Was Eleanor Maynard Radford at home?”
“What about my in–laws‘ place?”
“They weren’t there either?”
Harlan had followed him out and only heard that last part.
He immediately went back to the office and called Maricela Archdale. “Mari Bear, I think Cedrick knows Eleanor is missing. You need to be careful not to give anything away.”
“I know. Lucille is back. But it’s fine. I used a separate phone to contact them, and I’ve completely cut off contact now. I even threw the SIM card away.”
“Good. I was worried you’re too honest and might let something slip. Anyway, we don’t know anything.”
“The key is that the people on the other end keep their mouths shut and don’t thing.”

“Leaving an old lady alone in a place she doesn’t know… her son and daughter–in–law will get worried and want to be filial. Aren’t we just helping people and earning good karma?”
Maricela laughed on the other end of the line.
Harlan laughed too. “Yeah, that’s one way to put it. But Cedrick is probably out looking for Eleanor now. We got a head start, made our move before he could. Now that everyone’s in Seaston, it probably won’t be hard for Cedrick to find her. We have to make sure those three idiots from the Radford family don’t start running their mouths. Of course, I’ll handle that. You don’t need to get involved.”
“Harlan…” Maricela’s voice softened on the other end of the phone.
“Hm?”
“What’s wrong?”
“Harlan, thank you. You’re the only person in this world who helps me so wholeheartedly, without asking for anything in return, with no ulterior motives.”
Maricela’s delicate tone made it sound like she was about to cry.
Harlan was visibly moved. “You have Cedrick, too.”
“Cedrick…” Maricela choked up. “Cedrick is a good man, but… there’s always been Lucille between us. Even though he doesn’t love her, he’s too responsible. He has to be responsible for Lucille, and for her grandmother… When a person carries so much, he can’t be completely devoted to me.
“Maricela, Cedrick can’t help it…”
“I know. That’s the man I love. If he were an irresponsible person, I wouldn’t love him. But, Harlan, loving someone is so hard. Only you… you’re the one who moves me the most…”
“You silly girl.”
Harlan said, “What are we?
Best buds, right?
Are you free tonight?
Want to go out for a drink?”
“Sure!”

When Cedrick got back from Magraica, the first thing he did was look for the grandmother.
He landed in Capital City, but couldn’t find any trace of her.
No phone number, no rental information, no hotel records. Nothing.
Then Harlan called from Seaston, frantic, urging him to come back to Seaston for a company
emergency.
So he had no choice but to return to Seaston.
