CHAPTER 35 How bold are you, you little puss
Another three months passed. Jack had fully recovered, while Stephanie was getting better too. In these three months, Stephanie, Jack, and the baby lived a harmonious life as a family. Their biggest gift was that the baby could not only say 'mama" completely, but also "papa."
After lunch, Stephanie put the baby to sleep. When she came to the bedroom, Jack took hold of her and gave her a long gentle kiss, cherishing her like some precious treasure.
The kiss was over and the two hugged each other sweetly. Smelling the fragrance of her hair, Jack suddenly asked, "Do you know that one day after you "died," I heard the baby crying in his room and I went there to check out. It turned out that there was your smell there. Did you come that day?"
Stephanie squinted her eyes like a cozy cat. She winked for several times before answering in an innocent way, "Which day? I didn't."
Jack began to laugh and tickle Stephanie. "I don't trust you."
"Believe it or not is up to you."
The two flirted for a while. They finally stopped when Stephanie was exhausted.
"I want to see Steve." Stephanie said abruptly. After a while, she added, "With the baby."
"What about me?" Jack was silent for a while, and then he asked enviously.
"You will drive us there."
"How bold are you, you little puss!"
Before Steve's tomb, the young couple was standing solemnly with a baby. After those three sticks of incenses were burnt out, Jack touched the gravestone and looked at the dust in his hands. "It's time for some cleaning." He sighed.
Stephanie smiled cunningly. "Let's go take some tools from the car, then."
"You brought the tools?" Jack was amazed.
Stephanie nodded. Feeling the curiosity in his sight, she then explained, "I noticed that last time I came."
"You are really mindful to your surroundings, my sweetheart." Jack smiled at her.
They went to car to take the tools. Stephanie was standing aside quietly. Staring at Steve's gravestone, she suddenly felt an urge to speak. "Steve, do you still remember my grumble the last time I came here? I felt so sorry to you by then. I was so selfish that I didn't even want to keep a child of yours. Do you see how healthy the baby is now? Jack and I will take good care of him. Don't you worry."
The wind blew gently, forming a great harmony with her whispers. Stephanie found herself to be too imaginative, so she gave a self-mocking smile.
Jack came back with the tools. Since Stephanie was carrying the baby, he started cleaning on his own. When cleaning an alcove in the back of the gravestone, Jack stopped for a while, which was noticed by Stephanie. Soon after, Jack came to them with a box in his hands. Having reached a tacit agreement with an eye contact, they opened the box.
There was a letter inside. Jack opened it in doubt. It was written by Steve.
Jack, when you are reading this letter, I am probably gone. This is within my expectation. Though I am unwilling to leave this beautiful world, I can do nothing to change it. Still, I have something important to tell you, something I haven't mentioned to you before. It is like a heavy stone on my chest, making me unable to breathe.
What's that? Ashamedly, It is about Stephanie. Remember how I introduced her to you on the first day? Unlike what I told you, she was not my girlfriend. I lied to you. She was never my girlfriend. Do you know how jealous I was, Jack, for you could earn her love? As for me, my love was destined to be fruitless.
Let's talk about something more optimistic. You still have a long life to live, and I sincerely hope that you can enjoy your time with Stephanie. Don't deny your feelings anymore. I know you fell in love with her at first sight.
It was the end of the letter. Stephanie and Jack looked at each other, and they both saw surprise and grief in each other's eyes. It was the grief for the short life of their friend, as well as the grief for their love.
Stephanie tilted her head with a lovely smile. "Fortunately, It's still not too late."
"I think it's too late." Jack gave a bitter laugh. "The outsider sees the most clearly. I didn't even know my own feelings as well as Steve did."
"You mean "falling in love at first sight?"" Stephanie stuck her tongue out.
"And your love for me." Jack fought back.
Eventually, they started to laugh. They laughed so badly that they even burst into tears. We don't know who stopped first, but the two ended up with a sweet embrace. As for the letter, it was gone with the wind.
"As long as you love me, it is never too late." Stephanie looked at that letter in the air with a smile.
"You are such a fool."
