CHAPTER 23 This is her child, her life's work
"You want me to leave?" After a moment of recall, Stephanie got surprised by Jack's words. She couldn't believe that Jack, who acted so tough at the airport, would let her go this easily.
"You are the one who wanted to leave. I can't stop you." Jack smiled mockingly, his pupils dark and mysterious. "We agreed that once you have given birth to this child, there will no longer be relations between us. I have no right to stop you right now."
Stephanie fell silent. Indeed, she had no reason to stay. She looked back the baby, who then suddenly broke into tears as if their feelings are shared. His cry disturbed her.
No, she couldn't leave her baby here!
"If you want me to leave, I will, but not before he recovers. I am staying here to look after him." Stephanie said resolutely, staring right into Jack's eyes.
Jack had never found Stephanie so brave. Besides, he found out that Stephanie would no longer react to his hurtful words, which raised his doubt. Was she the Stephanie he knew from the past?
All these years, he had never really paid attention to Stephanie, but he had somehow got familiar with her. He smiled bitterly in his heart and nodded. The expectation in her eyes had nothing to do him and was completely for the baby.
Is there any other way to keep her?
Being permitted, Stephanie at once walked over to the babysitter and got back her child. After a while of tender care, the baby finally stopped crying, giving her the chance to take a close look.
It was not until then that she found out her baby to be so lovely. His shiny black eyes were vivacious and innocent.
The baby seemed to notice his mother's presence and started giggling. In return, Stephanie lowered her head and rubbed her face against his gently.
This is her child, her life's work.
Throughout the process, Jack was standing aside in silence. He maintained his cold look, but there seemed to be hidden warmth, like a father staring at his beloved wife and child.
But there were other things that needed to be done. Jack squinted at the babysitter, implying her to go out. She again got stressed.
She followed Jack out humbly. She lowered her head and was all ears for his words.
"Why did that happened to the child?" Jack's voice was cold, which scared the babysitter and gave her a shiver.
Of course, it was all Liz's plan. Long ago, Liz bribed the babysitter. She didn't know Liz would make her do things so dangerous.
But she's just a babysitter. What could she do? She considered Liz's deeds too cruel for a baby, but… Since Jack was back, she had always been fearful of him. What would come, however, was inevitable after all.
"Sir, I didn't mean to…" She answered hesitantly. She dared not to say that Liz was behind all these, so she took the responsibility.
Though she saw what happened in the room, she couldn't rely on the bet that Jack wouldn't change his attitude towards Liz. If he did, the consequence would be devastating.
"You didn't mean to do that?" Jack continued, "I hired you to take care of the child, but what have you done? If there's something wrong with him, do you really think you can afford it?"
"I am so sorry, sir…I…" She was nearly overwhelmed and about to tell the truth.
"What's going on with you?" Jack asked, having noticed that there was something wrong with her.
"I…" She knew that her lie was about to be exposed so she added, "I wasn't with the baby that time. I went to get some diapers for him and didn't notice…"
"Why didn't you ask someone else to watch him then?" Jack immediately located the flaw and questioned.
"I forgot to… and I…" She was still striving to find more excuses.
Jack turned impatient so he unmasked her directly, "You are lying!"
"Sir!" The babysitter wailed, "I didn't intend to do that! Please believe me!"
For Jack, she was merely utilizing his sympathy after realizing there's no way back, which was what he hated most. Jack hinted the two bodyguards beside, "Take her away for further questioning."
"Please don't, sir!" The babysitter was scared and started begging, but it only annoyed him more.
Whether she did it intentionally or not, the baby got hurt because of her so she must pay the price.
