CHAPTER 22 Listen to me, Jack, I didn't mean to do
'strangers?" Stephanie took two steps back. The word hurt her deeply.
Is there something more miserable for a mother than being taken as a stranger by her own child? But who was the one to blame? Though she didn't want to keep this child at first, she had got no control of the things that happened after he was born. She had been unable to leave the bed for two months after the child's birth.
None of Stephanie and Liz gave in. Looking at her child in Liz's arms, Stephanie was anxious and angry, but she feared that taking him back by force would get him hurt.
Stephanie knew well about Liz's nature. She turned to look at Jack helplessly, which made him moved at bit. Stephanie felt surprised, expecting what he was about to do.
In fact, Jack was angry too. The word 'strangers" also hurt him.
Seeing Jack approaching with a sullen look, Liz fell anxious but was still cherishing some hope deep inside her mind. Nonetheless, such poor hope was ruined by the time Jack started speaking.
"Give the baby to me." Jack said coldly, which made Liz trembled. She didn't want to give up yet.
"Listen to me, Jack. The baby's still not acquainted with Stephanie. She's going to scare him." Liz was still looking for excuses. She unconsciously stressed Stephanie's name.
"The baby's crying." Jack didn't want to waste more time and said in a more order-like tone.
"Jack!" Liz gave the final struggle. She had felt his anger, but she didn't want to be embarrassment before Stephanie.
Her persistence had gone beyond Jack's endurance. He gave her a slap.
"Jack?" Liz didn't expect this at all and her tears oozed out. Since her childhood, she had never felt so wronged. What's worse, she was right before her foe Stephanie by then.
Unbelievably, Liz found her reason back in such extreme anger. She wiped her tears off and walked to Stephanie with a poker face, after which she passed the baby to her.
Stephanie reached out her hands. However, right before they came into contact, the baby fell from Liz's hands.
In that moment, Stephanie's heart stopped beating. She at once fell half-kneeling, trying to catch the baby. Meanwhile, her hands touched another pair of big hands. She raised her head and found out that it was Jack. Though they both reached out to catch the baby, he still got hurt.
Stephanie held the baby tight, sobbing. She started rocking him gently. In contrast to Liz's words, the baby gradually calmed down in Stephanie's arms.
Seeing that the baby's fine, Jack was relieved. He stood up and stared at Liz, his face expressionless. Liz almost cried out when she explained in a pathetic look, "Listen to me, Jack. I didn't mean to do that."
"Get out!" Jack pointed at the door and said coldly. His anger was about to burst out.
Liz was still struggling, "Jack…"
Jack didn't give her any more chances. He turned around and looked at Stephanie and the baby.
Liz stared at them enviously with her hands tightly clenched. She actually didn't want to do that, but she somehow made such a horrible mistake. She once thought about that, but…
It must be Stephanie's appearance which affected her judgment. Liz knew it would be meaningless to stay there, so she staggered away with a pale look.
Stephanie, I will make you pay for the humiliation I suffered today!
Since the baby still hit the ground, Jack went to find the doctor. After knowing what happened, the doctor scolded them again for their carelessness. Clearly, he took them as a newly-married couple without much experience looking after a child.
Jack had been a business tycoon for long and no one dared to treat him like the doctor did, but the doctor's preach even made him feel a bit warm. He wanted to see how Stephanie responded to the doctor's words, but found her paying full attention to the baby without noticing anything happening around.
The doctor left hastily after finishing his speech. The babysitter sent the child to a public hospital, in which the doctors were very busy. Jack then got the chance to scrutinize Stephanie. He found her to be bone-thin, but he knew that Stephanie wouldn't forgive him that easily, which placed him in a predicament. His sight fell on the baby who was sleeping quietly in Stephanie's arms and a trace of struggle flashed in his eyes. That the only way!
Before Stephanie could react, the baby she was holding was taken away by Jack. She glared at Jack, who was passing the baby to the babysitter aside, and trying hard to suppress the urge to take the baby back. She stood up from the ground.
"What are you doing?" Stephanie clenched her fists. Her eyes had turned impassive. Now she had only one thought: to stay with her baby, as a mother!
In fact, there's one more thing she craved. She wanted to take the baby back by force and left here, but she knew that was impossible. She sneered at her own status in her heart.
"It was you who didn't want to keep this child." Jack said in a poker face. His usual indifference was back. "So you may leave now."
For an instant she thought that she had turned back to that stupid woman who loved him with all her heart. Jack, however, was still indifferent.
But there was no going back for anything.
