Chapter 420 Poisonous Plot

Chapter 420 Poisonous Plot

Sophie lowered her head, her shoulders trembling slightly. "I'm sorry, I really messed up. It was my fault. But I'm your fiancée, can't you cut me some slack? Even if you can't treat me like you treat Wendy, can't we go back to how things were before all this mess?"

Alexander's voice was icy. "Did you ever think about me when you were doing those things?"

Sophie wiped away her tears and asked cautiously, "Alexander, is the engagement party still happening?"

Her eyes were full of hope. This engagement party was her last chance to salvage her relationship with Alexander.

But to her surprise, Alexander turned away without a word and left.

Sophie watched the taillights of his car disappear, a wave of panic rising in her heart.

It seemed Alexander was determined to cut her out of his life.

Not only that, but the collaboration between the Turner Group and the Russell Group was also dwindling.

In this situation, Sophie knew she couldn't just sit and wait.

At the resort hotel on Rocky Island, a waiter pushed a dinner cart to the door of a standard suite and knocked gently.

"Your dinner's here."

The door opened slightly, and a slender but pale hand reached out.

"Miss, besides the main course, we've paired it with some wine and side dishes. If it's inconvenient for you, I'll leave the cart here, and you can pull it in yourself. After you're done, just leave the cart by the door, and someone will come to collect it."

The waiter thoughtfully turned the cart so the handle faced the door and then left.

Five minutes later, the door opened again, and a haggard, thin woman pulled the cart into the room.

She placed the dishes on the table, uncovering a beautifully prepared steak, paired with Polish wine and a tempting pizza.

Her hands trembled slightly as she took out a plastic-wrapped item from her pocket.

She hesitated, her eyes full of struggle.

A low voice came from behind her, "You don't have much time left anyway. Think about your sick mother in the hospital. You can't earn enough to pay for her treatment, but if you die, someone will take care of her."

The woman turned around, trembling, her face pale as she looked at the speaker, her voice filled with hope and fear, "Can you really do that?"

"Why wouldn't we? Don't forget who she is. She always keeps her promises, and this amount of money is nothing to her." The woman behind her sneered.

Finally, the woman gritted her teeth, swallowed hard, and opened the plastic bag, sprinkling its contents evenly over the steak.

She carefully tied a napkin around her neck, forcing a bitter smile.

She had never eaten such a fine meal in her life. This steak alone was worth thousands of dollars. She never thought she'd get to taste something like this before she died.

She picked up her phone again, looking at a photo of her and her mother on the screen, and closed her eyes, whispering, "Dad, I'm coming to find you."

She put the phone away, poured herself a glass of wine, and took a small sip.

Then she picked up the knife and fork, cut a small piece of steak, and put it in her mouth.

She ate slowly, taking nearly an hour to finish the meal.

The woman behind her watched silently, showing no impatience.

Finally, the woman ate the last piece of drug-laced steak.

With a look of relief on her face, she slowly collapsed onto the table, the knife and fork clattering to the floor.

The woman behind her shuddered, a flash of fear in her eyes.

She cautiously approached, reaching out to check the woman's breathing.

Her face turned ashen, and she fell to the floor in shock.

Quickly, she noticed the plastic bag, grabbed it, and rushed to the toilet, flushing it away.

Sweat covered her forehead by the time she finished.

Ignoring the sweat, she hurried to the door.

The next moment, she flung the door open, her scream echoing down the hallway.

"Help! Somebody, help!"

Her voice was sharp and piercing, and hotel staff quickly arrived, running to her side.

"Miss, what's wrong?"

"She, she..." The woman, pale and tear-streaked, pointed to the person collapsed at the table, "Please, help her!"

Several staff members rushed into the room, and the manager checked the woman's pulse.

After a moment, he stopped anyone from moving her, his expression grave, "Don't touch anything!"

The manager sensed something was wrong. Moving the body could destroy evidence.

He took out his phone, quickly calling for an ambulance and the police, and instructed a staff member to notify Wendy.

Wendy was in the yoga room trying out a new fitness routine when a staff member hurried over, looking flustered.

"Ms. Knight, something's happened."

Something happened?

Wendy saw the staff member's expression and knew it was serious.

Sure enough, after hearing the details, she immediately stopped what she was doing, her tone serious, "Take me there."

Ten minutes later, police cars arrived with sirens blaring, and medical personnel were performing emergency procedures in the room.

Wendy saw the crying women at the door.

She remembered them from when she checked in, thinking they were just here for a vacation.

Tessa Hawthorne was sobbing at the door, her friend Maeve Harrington lying motionless by the table, the room in disarray.

The police quickly cordoned off the area.

Tessa, her face streaked with tears, babbled to the police, "I don't know what happened! I came to see Maeve to plan our next trip. We heard the dinner being delivered. Maeve is shy and doesn't like dealing with strangers, so she waited until the waiter left to bring the food in."

"She invited me to join her, saying we should try the fancy steak since we never get to eat such things. I hadn't even gone back to my room when she suddenly collapsed. You have to find out what happened! Maeve's had such a hard life, her dad died early, and her mom is sick in the hospital. How could this happen?"

The police patiently took notes, asking, "Can you recall exactly what you saw? Describe it in detail."

Tessa took a deep breath, trying to calm down, and began to recount, "I was there when..."

Wendy listened to Tessa's story, full of suspicion.

If Maeve was struggling to pay medical bills, why would she spend money on a high-end resort?

From the day they checked in, Wendy had noticed something off about them.

She thought, this might be a plot against Rocky Island.

Her eyes fell on Maeve's body, wondering who was behind this.

With Rocky Island and Lakewood Island both opening, Sophie's company had suffered from a scandal, while Rocky Island's reputation soared.

To turn the tide, someone might resort to such drastic measures.

Wendy smirked bitterly. Sophie had always been ruthless, willing to do anything to achieve her goals.

Guests gathered, despite the police's efforts to maintain order, and rumors spread quickly.

"Someone died at Rocky Island, from eating steak!" Such rumors flew, and Wendy could already imagine the sensational headlines.

A police officer called out, "Who's in charge here?"

Wendy stepped forward, "I am."

The officer's face was stern, "Notify the kitchen, evacuate everyone. Check the rooms that received steak today, stop serving it, and seal the remaining steak as evidence. We'll have officers accompany your staff."

Wendy nodded, quickly instructing the manager, then asked, "Sir, can you tell me what's going on?"

The officer gave her a cold look, "You don't know? A guest ate your hotel's steak and died."

Wendy's heart tightened, her fists clenching, "I just found out."

She was anxious to inform Gilbert, knowing Sophie wouldn't stop at this.

The officer announced, "No one is to leave the hotel during the investigation."

Tessa and the other women suddenly rushed at Wendy, shouting, "It's your hotel's fault! You killed Maeve, arrest her!"

"Maeve died because of you, the hotel must be held accountable!"

The police quickly intervened, protecting Wendy, "Ladies, please calm down. We will investigate thoroughly. Don't act rashly."
