Chapter 61 Drinking
Adrian’s POV.
“Slow down with the alcohol,” Caleb said as I rolled my eyes at him, I didn’t want to slow down, I needed to feel the burn running through my body.
“Don’t tell me what to do?”
“Why do you come up here? I thought after you left, I finally got rid of you, now you are here, scaring off customers.” He joked and I rolled my eyes at him again. “Tell me what you did.?”
“She found out the truth, the truth not all of it, she didn’t even ask my side of the story, she has been communicating with someone, that is a part of my family, it could be him, it could be anyone she doesn’t even know how dangerous it is.
“You didn’t-“he was about to say when he kept quiet. “Did you at least try to explain?” He asked and I didn’t speak. “You lied to her that first time didn’t you about yourself about your family and now that she has found out, she does not like it, she is not happy about it.” He stated.
“You don’t know if that happened.”
“I have known you for ten years, most of it, you annoy me but shutting down my business just so that you can have a drink alone.”
“I pay you more than enough to stay for as long as I want,” I mumbled against my breath.
“Fuck off.” He muttered and a bitter chuckle escaped my lips. “I was only trying to protect her, she is not ready to hear the truth, at least that’s what I thought, I didn’t even think that she would ever want to know any part of the truth, I thought she would be scared to,” I said
I thought I was doing the right thing, yes I lied to her because I was not ready to tell her, her pap and I decided she would only know after he dies and I respected his wishes.
I never lied to her about my mama, though. I never lied about the dinners, or how she loved cooking; all these things took place, and it happened the way I explained it.
“I yelled at her.” I breathed out, my heart beating against my chest, my mind filled with thoughts as I felt an ache. A pain surrounding my chest, I am the one who did her worst and I yelled at her, if she ends up always hating me I will understand.
“You can fix all of this, if you don’t tell her the truth, someone else will, you really won’t want that, it will only ruin the little that’s left.”
“My only friend in a town I grew up in is a bartender.”
“Only because I didn’t see the need to be a part of the mafia, this is good for me and hey we met when we were very young.” He joked and I smiled
Yes, we did, even as a kid he worked here, they didn’t care if he was a kid, all he wanted was to have money and to make ends meet and he was able to do that.
“If I tell her the truth, she may never understand and how will she even know it’s the truth, right now she doesn’t trust me, she sees me as someone who lied to her, someone who cares less about her:” I explained.
“But you don’t care less, you are self sabotaging yourself, you are doing that thing where you think you are desperately right, but you know you are wrong and you know what you have to do is make sure that you don’t lose your fucking mind, what you have to do is run home and talk to her, tell her you are sorry and you want ro fix things, she is emotional, she lost her father and she trusted you, after what her family did to her, after what her maid did to her, she trusted you and you broke her trust.”
“I am going to have to stop telling you things, it seems like you know a lot more than anyone else does.
“You are never too young to stop doing that.” He smiled at me.
Maybe he is right, I should run home to get, tell her that’s the truth, but I didn’t want to do that when I am this durnk, I didn’t want it to escalate inot another fight, I know she won’t want to speak to me, she is mad at me, so it’s going to take a lot.m
“Maybe take her her favorite flowers just so that she can smile at me, and maybe I will make sure that, I stay by her door even if she locks it, eventually she will get hungry, or force her to speak to me, do you think she will believe my side of the story?”
“Her father did and he is no fool, he knows right and wrong and if you could convince him, you can do the same with her and we all know the truth, many of us just don’t say anything.”
“I will have you dead if you do speak.”
“If you do. Whose bar are you going to be coming to, and I know you don’t have a bartender to speak to in your big city.” He said and I smiled again.
I had my own bar, I drank at home but here it’s different, it felt good being back here, it felt like I could see my fifteen-year-old self sitting here again and taking my first sip of whiskey, thinking it’s a bit rough and bitter and I don’t like it.
“You know what to do and if you like, you can sleep here though I will prefer you be with your wife, your guards are outside and it’s safe.” He said and I nodded.
I was about to speak when I heard the door open, my eyes turned softly around and I saw Sophie walking into the place
Fuck.
