Chapter 35
Chapter 35
The whole pack members stood on a large courtyard with their eyes fixed on Alpha Varlos who paced around as he spoke. Everywhere was quiet and the only thing that could be heard was the deep furious voice of Alpha Varlos.
As soon as we showed up at the pack, his glaring eyes pierced on mine, sending shivers all over my spine.
He took his gaze away from me and directed it at the members of his pack.
"I want us all to be strong. To be active and resilient. We're werewolves, we're known for our strength and purity so I believe we have all it takes to fight against the vampires. According to reports of the most recent death, there is evidence that it was caused by bites from vampires,
"I hope our trusted vampire here isn't stabbing us in the back by siding with his kind. I hope he isn't forming alliances with them so they could conquer by eradicating we werewolves," Alpha Varlos blurted, giving Desmond a suspicious look.
Desmond walked towards him and gave him a slight bow.
He raised his head and locked eyes with him.
"I swore my allegiance to your pack when I became a mate to a werewolf from your pack. I'll never break such a promise and I'll do all I can to support the werewolves even if it means fighting against my own people."
Alpha Varlos advanced towards him with a sneer. He placed his hand on Desmond's shoulder and muttered to him.
"Ever since my son introduced that cursed lady as his mate–\[Pardon if I use the wrong language\] – I wasn't pleased. I was hellbent on putting an end to their bond because I never believed that my own son could be mated to an Omega.
"I became more enraged and horrified to discover that his so-called mate will also be a mate to two other people of different kinds. Then what can I do? The witches proclaimed that it was destined by the moon goddess so as to bring peace in our world."
Keeping his gaze on Desmond, Alpha Varlos made gestures to emphasize.
"I was ready to break that bond but then I remembered my dream and my long time quest for peace. I'm not too surprised with all this happening because when my son, Carlos, was much younger, a witch had told me about his fate of having an omega as a mate and the complex mate bond that is attached to it. She said it had to happen for peace to reign and so that's the only reason I agreed to my son having to share his mate." Alpha Varlos admitted as he gazed at all four of us.
His formerly affable demeanor vanished as a scowl took over his face.
He looked at Desmond and said. "Because I agreed with my son, sharing his mate doesn't make me weak. I know you're a vampire but if I find out that you took my acknowledgement of your bond with them for granted, I won't hesitate to behead you and pull out your heart,"
.
"I'm starting to have doubts about your bond," Alpha Varlos emphasized, his gaze piercing at me and my mates.
"I'm starting to doubt it because I thought it was meant to bring peace, but no, it brought nothing but a second war. The Vampires are transgressing, some of my people are dying, should I wait until every one of my pack members is eradicated before I see the lies and theories attached to your bond?"
Desmond decided to speak with Alpha Varlos as soon as he caught his attention.
"I Know you'll question our mating bond because of the fact that we're of different kinds. I know you have every right to doubt it because of the recent happenings and the war the vampires are starting but you really need to believe us. There are some things that'll undoubtedly happen before peace can reign and a perfect example of such thing is war,
"Furthermore, as I have stated before and will continue to reiterate, I am not your pack's enemy. I'll exert every effort to keep your pack members safe. I will do everything in my power to uphold my promised loyalty."
Turning to face Desmond, Alpha Varlos had a smug smirk on his face.
"To what extent can I trust you or your loyalty? We had reports of new deaths caused by vampires this morning. I can't risk the safety of my pack members by trusting you blindly."
Desmond nodded and said to him. "I promise to do all I can, to stop the Vampires from taking more actions against us. Trust me, Sir."
"I don't think that alone is enough for me," Alpha Varlos emphasized with a stern look, his deep brown sharp eyes piercing directly into Desmond's gray orbs.
"I have every need to question your allegiance. I don't trust anyone and you being a different kind makes me doubt your loyalty every single day." Alpha Varlos retorted as he shook his head.
Carlos advanced towards them and turned to face his father. "That's enough dad! Desmond has always been loyal. What we need to focus on right now is fighting the vampires and protecting ourselves."
Alpha Varlos scowled at his son and bellowed at Desmond. "If truly you're on our side, I need proof. Yes, proof. I'm no dumb leader. Fine, I agree my son is now the Alpha of Goldmoon pack but I can't watch as the pack crumbles in his reign because of his complex mate bond with the enemies!"
"I understand how you feel, Alpha Varlos," Desmond admitted as he raised his head to stare at Alpha Varlos.
"Anyone in your state will feel the same way. I completely understand that you have to take every precaution to defend your pack, but when I say that I'm not your adversary, I really mean it."
Desmond brought out a white bottle filled with crystalline liquid from his pocket.
"This with me is a bottle filled with vervain,"
"Vervain is a medical substance that will help people not to be under the influence of a compulsion made by a vampire."
Alpha Varlos scoffed and said, "So what do we do with that piece of information? Your people are waging war against us and what we do is admire some medicinal liquid in your bottle?"
"You're getting me wrong Sir. I believe I stated the importance of vervain earlier. It will help anyone who drinks it to resist any compulsion made on them by vampires. Vampires compel people to do things or get what they want. I'm trying to prevent your pack members from getting compelled by giving them this to drink."
"What gibberish are you spilling? How will thousands of people here drink from a small bottle of vervain? Does that even make any sense to you?" Alpha Varlos asked with wide eyes, his voice tinged with scorn.
"Not from this bottle but from that large tank over there," Desmond confessed as he directed their gaze towards a black large tank on a metal stand.
"I've been filling that tank with vervain since I came here. I knew there'd be a time like this when it'll be needed."
"Great. But know this," Alpha Varlos rumbled, looking unimpressed as he drew closer to Desmond.
"If any more of my people die because of the vampires, I promise not to go easy on you."
Alpha Varlos turned to face the crowd and announced to them. "We shall have take some of his vervain but maybe later because we have a little test to do now,"
Everyone's eyes went wide as we wondered what kind of test he meant. I narrowed my eyes at Alpha Varlos, feeling he was up to something.
"We all know Desmond, who appears to be the only vampire here, has been trained to resist blood. But maybe we have another Vampire here among us pretending to be one of us!" Alpha Varlos bellowed, drawing gasps from the crowd.
My eyes widened at his statement; I still wondered what he was up to.
"Maybe a vampire has mixed up among us here and is probably spying on us so as to deliver some information to our enemies." Alpha Varlos uttered and turned to face a man behind him.
The man stepped forward according to Alpha Varlos's order and I could see a small knife in his hand.
"I'll do a little test now to see if we truly have a vampire among us apart from Desmond,
"If I find out, I won't hesitate to kill such a person as he might be a threat to our pack." Alpha Varlos emphasized with gritted teeth as he faced Desmond, making him aware of what he intended to do to one of his kind.
My heart raced faster as my conscience hit on me. I felt the urge that something bad would happen.
As I tried hard to control my thoughts, my eyes widened when I saw Hazel.
Hazel is now a Vampire. A newbie vampire who can't control her hunger for blood at a mere sight of it.
Oh no.. No one must know she's now a hybrid as they wouldn't think twice before killing her.
I turned to face Xavier, my face etched with worry and concern.
"H– Hazel is now a vampire," I muttered to him in his ear. "What if she is caught?"
"We have no idea what Alpha Varlos is up to but we sure know she's in danger if she's caught."
Xavier nodded in understanding and connected to Carlos through the mind link.
{Hey! We have a little bit of a problem here.}
Xavier mumbled to Carlos in the mind link.
{What is it?}
{It's Hazel. We don't know what Alpha Varlos is up to but we do know she's a newbie vampire and can be caught easily,}
I saw Carlos's eyes widened as he gazed at Hazel from where he stood.
My heart raced and I held Hazel's hand tightly, trying my best to calm her down.
"I'm scared," Hazel muttered to me while I held her by the cheek and flashed her a comforting smile.
"I've informed them. They'll find a way to help you so you don't have to worry," I assured her, despite the fact that I was the one who was more anxious.
"Go on with it!" Aloha Varlos instructed with a deep loud fearful voice as he turned to face the man he called earlier.
The man locked eyes with Alpha Varlos and nodded in understanding of his order.
He faced us and cut himself on the wrist with the knife.
Blood gushed out of the cut and he growled in pain, showing every one of us the fresh blood dripping from his wound.
"We know vampires can't resist fresh blood. So wherever you are and whoever you are, please fail this test so we can identify you." .
Alpha Varlos roared as he paced around the stage, his eyes fixed on every single person.
There were huge sentinels with stern faces stationed at every corner. They kept an eye on every single person in the crowd, looking for the suspect.
"Common! Show yourself!" Alpha Varlos bellowed with a hint of scorn on his face.
Some sentinels had weapons in their hands, getting ready to attack whoever it was that turned out to be a vampire.
As I turned to face Hazel, I saw her grumbling at the sight of the blood.
I tried to cover her eyes so she wouldn't see it but it was no use, people might easily suspect us and she could still smell the blood clearly.
As I tried to calm her down by locking hands with her, Xavier drew me away from her, trying to protect me in case she attempted to feed on me.
"I know you can do this Hazel. You can try to control it, I believe in you," Xavier muttered to her but she growled angrily.
Her brows furrowed and her eyes were starting to turn black.
"Oh! No! She's losing control," I muttered as worry took over me.
{We have to do something, Carlos,} Xavier muttered to Carlos through their mind link.
{I've informed Desmond. He's coming over to her direction. She will feed on him}
{How the hell is she gonna do that? Every fg eyes is on us}
{Gosh! I don't fg know how we're gonna do that too but we have no choice either,}
As Desmond made the attempt to advance towards us, Alpha Varlos stopped him and said, "You ain't going nowhere. You have to stay beside me till we find the suspect,"
"Or are you panicking because you have one of your kind with us?"
Alpha Varlos said with a little smug smile and Desmond's eyes widened a little. He couldn't move further because of Alpha Varlos's plain threat.
Hazel's growl was starting to get the attention of some people beside her. They squinted their eyes as they stared fixedly at her in suspicion.
My heart panicked more than normal; I was freaking scared of what would happen.
What if she can't resist it? What am I
even saying, she's already showing signs of being unable to resist it.
Oh moon goddess!
What if she transforms into a hybrid and advances to feed on the man with the wound?
