Chapter 255: Bruce's fear

Chapter 255: Bruce's fear

"Sorry, did I scare you?" Bruce asked. He already knew the answer, but he still asked. He was also scared of the outcome. At that moment, he regretted opening that compartment. What could he do, though?
"I can explain, Lauren, please listen to me." As he said this, he tried inching towards Lauren.
"Don't. " Lauren leaned back and put up a defensive stance. She didn't know the kind of person she was dealing with, so she decided to put a safe distance between the two of them.
When Bruce saw how distant she had suddenly become, a flash of pain flashed past his eyes. He had no idea what had changed. He had a feeling that if he didn't work on it as soon as possible, he was going to lose her forever. He had to recollect himself and explain everything to her. He didn't want to lose her. Neither did he want to turn her back into the person she was back when he first met her. That was his biggest fear. Bruce had never felt so scared in his life. Without thinking too much, he looked for a place and parked the car there. He knew he couldn't explain himself while driving. Many things could happen in that time frame.
"Please, promise that you'll listen to what I'm about to tell you keenly." Bruce said solemnly, and Lauren nodded as a promise. She didn't have the energy to say anything at that moment. But Bruce knew that was the only chance he had to make things right.

"Would you believe me if I said I keep this with me just for self-defense?" After saying this, Bruce laughed at himself. He knew she wouldn't believe him, and he had no idea why he asked that question either. When he saw that Lauren was still staring at him, he continued;
"You must know that our families are among the top three aristocratic families in the country, so we definitely attract all kinds of dangers. That's why, for our own safety, each one of us has to keep a gun with us. We don't know what would happen to us, you know, so yeah, just to be safe." Bruce said. He hoped he was genuine while explaining that.
Lauren looked at Bruce's face for a while, as if scrutinizing him to know whether what he was saying was the truth or not. She took her time, and Bruce didn't rush her either.
After a long while,
"So you're saying my brothers and even Bellamy all have guns with them?" Lauren asked carefully.
"I'm afraid, yes." Bruce nodded. He couldn't lie to her, could he? He just wanted to make things right.
"Lauren?" When she was unusually silent, Bruce had no choice but to call out because her silence was becoming scary.

On the other end;
Maya had missed Craig, so when she was free and didn't have classes, she decided to pay him a visit. She was still learning how to drive so she couldn't be allowed to drive her own car at that moment. She took a taxi to where Craig lived. Fortunately, he had moved a bit closer to the capital. It was an hour drive to where he lived. She had notified him that she would be paying him a visit that day, so he was very much aware of it. He was looking forward to seeing her because he had also missed her.
Thirty minutes later, Craig, who was in the living room, received a call from Maya. He couldn't help but smile.
"Maya?" He called out gently as soon as he picked up the call.
"Are you Mr. Craig?" That was what Craig heard, and a bad premonition suddenly grew in the pit of his stomach. When he heard the contents that followed, his face turned instantly pale. Without wasting time, he picked up his car keys and rushed outside.
Two hours later, Ariel was busy typing on her computer when she received Craig's call.
"What?" Ariel was so startled that the phone almost slipped through her hands and unto the floor. She couldn't care less how she looked because she rushed out after receiving the call with a pale face, too.
