Chapter 20

“Every time I enter a room, it becomes dreadfully quiet. Is there a hostile takeover in the works? Darien merely half-joking. One of the more brash men might just feel the need to step down from his position of authority if enough of his followers grew tired of him.

A small blonde woman in a black business skirt and jacket leaned over the check-in counter before anyone could answer and yelled. I’ve given you my resume, but I really just want to speak with the doctor about a job, so listen, Angelina.

Snorting, Angelina said. Doc isn’t the one you need to persuade. The most significant member of the hospital board and the one making decisions is Darien Silver.

What’s next? Darien most certainly didn’t need to handle this at this time.

“Darien, come into my office. When I tell you the latest, you might want to get comfortable, Doc remarked.

“Wait!” The blonde pursued Darien and Doc before coming to a stop in front of them.

She extended her hand and grinned broadly at them. Completely phony. Largest and clearest blue eyes Darien had ever seen on a human being.

“Hi. You may not know me, but when I was ten years old and got into a whitewater rafting accident, Doctor Oliver set my broken leg, and ever then, I’ve wanted to be a nurse. Denver is where I obtained my nursing degree, and now here I am.

Darien didn’t shake her hand, hoping to put an end to this right away. Her smile dimming, she quickly lowered hers to her side. I have experience with this. When I went back home, I trained hard. She was now speaking with a hint of irritation. My folks are still in residence. Dad is a woodworker. Mom offers pottery items through a home business. Never have I wanted to work anywhere else, but the receptionist won’t provide my resume to the manager.

Doctor.” The blonde prodded Darien with her resume. Carol Wood, by the way, is my name.

The resume wasn’t taken by Darien. Consult the school. A nurse can help them. Simply say, “I sent you.

The cheerful woman’s face dropped to the ground. “But…” The staff is fully staffed. No one else is required.

Her arms were lowered. I have heard that there has been a lot of turmoil. Victims of gunfire. People are moving in more. You’ll require more workers. Attempt me, at least.

“Sign up for the school. If anyone leaves here, Theodore shrugged. “You might be fortunate.”

She cast a quick glance at Doc, but he agreed with Darien’s choice. Mister Silver is correct. At now, we don’t require any more nurses. Darien was signaled to follow him by him.

Ms Wood, come to the principal’s office. Together with the doctor, Darien walked along the hallway.

The woman was not pleased with his choice, and her heartbeat increased. It wasn’t the last he’d hear of it, either, he had a strong suspicion.

Doc closed the door after guiding Darien into his office.

The smell of chocolate donuts persisted, and a paper plate covered with chocolate glaze was in the center of his otherwise tidy oak desk. Everything was in its customary place, and the hefty brass caduceus was perched on a stack of medical notes that he would later transcribe. Carol Wood wrote to me before she graduated from nursing school. Due to how many students leave their programs early, I didn’t bring it up before with you. If nothing else, she is persistent.

“A person working at the hospital is not allowed. Not with how quickly our folks recover.

Doc took a seat at his desk. “How about limiting her assignments to human cases only?”

It was a nightmare too much to keep up with. What if the rest of the staff was occupied and she checked on Larissa, a lupus garou patient? Can you image her reaction if she witnessed Larissa leave the hospital so quickly after discovering the injuries? Due to her severe injuries, Larissa would have perished if she had been a person. Shaking his head, Darien regarded the magnificent mountains outside his window. It is not practical to have one of their type on the hospital staff. He inhaled deeply before changing the subject. What did you want to discuss with me?

“I conducted tests to determine whether she was pregnant due to her injuries. Not at all. I checked to see whether she was a virgin after that.

Darien frowned at him because he knew darn well why he was asking. Not the red was he mating with.

She’s virginal. It implies that she is single. Darien was relieved, even though he struggled to feel anything about the situation at all. He convinced himself that the reason was that he didn’t want to deal with her enraged mate if he went seeking for her.

In his leather recliner, Doc sat back. The other story is that after Larissa had been shot, someone attempted to choke her.

Darien felt as though he had been kicked off a cliff. Why in the world didn’t you notify me about this earlier?

She needs rest more than anything, so please don’t ask her many questions. She was already questioned about if she witnessed who did it. She may have been unconscious or almost so, but she was unable to recall anything. She claimed that a snake had choked her before slithering off when she heard noises. Jake’s and yours.

A serpent? There are no anacondas or boa constrictors in this area. Her flimsy awareness of imagination. Her throat was bruised by him. She was covering her neck with a turtleneck, so you couldn’t see the marks. You might not have seen that she is now wearing a hospital gown because she was so badly injured in her fall. Either he believed he had finished her, or he heard Jake and you coming and left.

“Well, Doc, I need to search the location where we found her for proof. I had assumed that she had been there alone, with Jake and I. If we can find any additional footprints, shoe measurements, scents, etc.

“I requested your uncle to look into it, but not to let on to you until I got a chance to talk to you about this,” he said.

This disobedience would not be tolerated by Darien! Nobody ever withheld from him knowledge this crucial! Ritka yelled from the direction of Larissa’s hospital room, and he opened his mouth to say as much.
