Chapter 76. We're Going To Die!
They sat quietly in the car. Riley sat on the right side, away from Logan, who had been busy with his iPad and cellphone. It seemed like he had a lot of important work to do. Logan left all his projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars because he had to chase Riley in Las Vegas. But fuck that. Riley didn't want to blame herself at all if Logan suffered a loss. It wasn't her fault if Logan lost a lot of money because he had to leave his projects.
“Sir, it looks like we are being followed.”
Riley looked back reflexively, but Logan squeezed her hand tightly and kept her from turning back.
“Logan, it hurts. Let go of my hand."
"Don’t look back. Bent down."
Logan suddenly pushed Riley's head down. Riley tried to fight back because she didn't want to duck under the chair. But Logan insisted on holding her head, so her back and head were level with the car seat.
"Call Jack and the others. I've suspected we were being followed since we crossed the Souther Crossroad. Turn right, Jacob."
Jacob nodded. Their car moved away from the busy area and onto a quieter road so they could avoid their pursuers.
“Second junction turn left.”
Logan glanced through the rearview mirror. His eyes were wary of suspicious-looking movements around his car. The people chasing him were in an old black Toyota and there were at least three people inside. Hopefully, he didn't guess wrong because he saw two people in the front seat and a man in the passenger seat. But they could have hidden a fourth and fifth person in the back seat or in the trunk.
“Let me sit up straight, Logan. My back hurts."
“Keep your head low. They may not come with gentleness."
Just after Logan finished his words, they heard gunshots behind them. The bullet missed their car and hit the asphalt. But they fired a second and a third and so on that Riley had to cover her ears in horror.
"They're shooting at us, sir."
“Keep driving. This car is bulletproof.”
Logan pulled up the compartment under his seat. He took the automatic gun from inside the compartment and checked the chamber. All still intact and twelve bullets. He looked back and saw someone in the front seat sticking out of the window pointing a gun at him.
"Pull to the left, keep going."
The left tire of the Rolls Royce went down to the dusty desert road, while the right tire remained on the asphalt. Brown dust was scattered around the cars and gave them good camouflage to avoid pursuers who tried to shoot at them.
Logan opened the window and reached out to shoot them. The bullet managed to break the windshield of their car. They sent a counterattack. They shot at the bumper of Logan's Rolls Royce.
"Dammit! They're after our tires. Go faster, Jacob."
“I was worried that the tires of this car would burst if I stepped on the pedal any faster. The asphalt is damn hot, and this place is barren, even though it's fall."
Bang! Bang!
Logan fired at them once more. The windshield of his car just got hit by two bullets. But, they only shook a few times and their car kept running on the asphalt. Logan's car was equipped with sophisticated bulletproof glass. But his car tires were not resistant to any type of bullet. If they intended to finish him off, they would have targeted his tires.
"Have you heard from Jack?"
"There's no signal. The line connecting the house and Jack is down."
"Damn! Who are these people? How dare they attack me?"
Logan stuck his head through the window and fired at them blindly. Twelve bullets were fired. He immediately filled the chamber with new bullets and started shooting again.
Meanwhile, Riley had slumped under the car seat. She was frightened and covered her ears with her palms to block the sound of the gunshots into her brain. That event would be a very terrible traumatic experience for her, even a nightmare.
“How long are we going to stay like this?”
Riley screamed amidst the chaos in the car. Logan and Jacob were concentrating on their respective works. Riley saw the speedometer needle ticking around eighty to one hundred miles per hour. The car was moving very fast. Her body shook in the car when Jacob drove on the uneven road or when he turned onto the dry sandy desert road.
She kept praying in her heart. She begged God for the safety of everyone in the car because she didn't want to see blood or injured people around her.
Bang
Bang
Bang
Logan pulled his head into the car and cursed loudly. His gun had run out of ammo for the second time, but his pursuers were still on him.
"Damn! They're tough. We can't keep going like this."
"What should we do, sir?"
"We have to stop and finish them off one by one."
"You are crazy. They seem dangerous. I don't want to see any more gunfights."
"No choice, baby," Logan stared at her blankly.
He took out more pistols from his compartment. This time the Baretta M9 with a fully loaded bullet chamber.
"Those who wish for their own death."
Bang
“Kyaa… What happened, Logan?”
Suddenly, they heard a loud bang and their car swayed. Jacob lost control of his very fast car. The car swerved to the right, onto a brown sandy road with dust splattering everywhere as Jacob tried to take control of the car.
"They shot the right tire. Hold on, Riley," Logan shouted loudly while watching his pursuers behind him.
Riley closed her eyes and hugged the car seat tightly. Her head was pressed against the soft surface of the chair as the shaking grew louder and uncontrollable. Their car stomped on anything they passed on the road as Jacob tried to stop the car. Dust scattered everywhere, shrouding the car, and Jacob couldn't see anything in front of him.
Riley coughed as the desert dust was sucked into her lungs because Logan had left his car window open to fire on their pursuers. He tried to shoot his pursuer through the open window and didn't seem at all concerned with his car that had sped away on a gravel desert road with torn tires. He trusted Jacob to be in control of the car, while he was only focused on the damn people who messed up with him today.
"Jacob, we're going to hit the bushes!" Riley screamed hysterically while peeking forward from behind the chair.
“There is no other way to stop this car. Hold on tight, Riley.”
"Kyyaaaa! We're going to die!" Riley's scream filled the entire interior of the car."
