Chapter 62 A HOSTAGE
CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO
GENERAL POV
Kate sat behind her desk, lazily flipping through a file as if the three men standing in front of her were nothing more than an inconvenience. Her home was quiet except for the ticking clock on the wall and the faint sound of traffic outside.
Then one of the men spoke.
“The boss ordered we take you.”
Kate looked up slowly, irritation flashing across her face.
“What?”
Her voice was sharp.
“Why…I've told him severally, I wasn't interested”
The man standing closest to her straightened slightly before answering.
“The battle between him and Kane is just starting. The boss doesn’t want any weaknesses.”
Kate leaned back in her chair and laughed under her breath.
“Weakness?”
She dropped the file on the desk and crossed her arms.
“Not like I can ever be his weakness. Savi will choose himself over me if I ever got caught.” She shrugged casually. “So just leave me alone.”
The men didn’t move.
One of them sighed quietly.
“I’m sorry, ma,” he said firmly. “You have to come with us.”
Kate’s eyes narrowed.
“Do I?”
The moment the word left her mouth, her hand moved under the table.
Fast and smooth.
The next second she pulled out a gun and pointed it directly at them.
The room went silent.
The men stiffened immediately.
One of them stared at her in disbelief.
“What do you think you’re doing?” he asked cautiously.
Kate’s finger rested on the trigger.
“I told you,” she said calmly, “I’m not leaving.”
Her voice hardened.
“Let me be. I’m not running away like a coward.”
The man exchanged a glance with the others.
“We have no option but to use force.”
He paused suddenly.
A buzzing sound came from his pocket.
He pulled out his phone and listened carefully.
His expression changed instantly.
Panic spread across his face.
“Kane’s men are almost here,” he said quickly.
Kate burst out laughing.
“Oh please.”
She lowered the gun slightly but did not put it away.
“Is this a game to make me follow you?”
She shook her head in disbelief.
“Kane knows I helped Samantha escape. He killed everyone else involved except me.”
Her eyes hardened.
“And now you think he suddenly wants to kidnap me again?”
The man looked frustrated.
He clearly did not have time to argue.
He nodded to the man beside him.
Just as the man stepped forward to grab Kate….
Something cold touched the back of his head.
None of them had time to react.
Puff………
The first shot echoed softly. The bullet tore through his skull and he dropped instantly.
Puff……..
The second man collapsed before he could even turn around.
Puff…….
The third one followed.
Three bodies fell to the ground almost at the same time.
Kate stared. Her brain struggled to process what had just happened.
The room had gone completely silent again.
The smell of gunpowder lingered in the air.
Her heart began to race.
She slowly lifted her eyes.
Someone stood behind the bodies.
Hidden partly in the shadows.
Her mouth opened. But before a single word could come out…
Something sharp pierced the side of her neck.
Kate gasped.
Her vision blurred almost immediately.
Her fingers lost their grip on the gun as it slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor.
The last thing she saw before darkness swallowed her was a pair of cold eyes staring down at her.
Then everything faded.
And Kate collapsed.
SAMANTHA’S POV
Morning came too quickly. The soft light creeping through the curtains slowly pulled me out of sleep. For a moment I lay still, trying to remember where I was and why my body felt sore.
Then it all rushed back.
The mansion…Kane…..Yesterday.
My eyes moved toward the bed beside me.
Micky was still sleeping peacefully, curled under her blanket like a tiny angel. Her small chest rose and fell slowly as she breathed.
A small smile touched my lips.
I leaned closer and gently kissed her forehead.
“Good morning, princess,” I whispered softly.
She didn’t wake.
Good.
Carefully, I slipped out of bed and quietly made my way out of the room. The hallway was still mostly empty at this hour.
I needed to move quickly.
If I stayed too long, someone might notice.
I crossed over to the other mansion where I usually bathed. The cold tiles under my feet sent a small shiver through my body.
My mind was already racing.
There were too many things to think about.
Too many dangers surrounding me.
But today I refused to let them consume me.
Inside the bathroom, I turned on the shower and stepped under the warm water.
My eyes dropped to the small scratches on my arm.
Kane had treated them yesterday.
The memory made something strange twist in my chest.
I quickly pushed the thought away.
Carefully, I avoided letting too much water touch the wounds.
Just because Kane saved me yesterday did not mean he would save me tomorrow.
That was something I understood very clearly.
Survival here depended on one thing.
Staying useful.
Which meant I needed to get on Mrs Draven’s good side as quickly as possible.
If she accepted me, my chances of surviving this place would increase.
And then there was Eliana.
Just thinking about her made my stomach tighten.
I believed women should break free from the mutate system.
But Eliana was different…..Dangerous.
She was the type of person who could smile while destroying someone’s life.
If I wasn’t careful, she could easily drag me into trouble.
I finished bathing quickly and stared at my reflection in the mirror.
For a moment I barely recognized the woman looking back at me.
The first time I arrived here, I was once terrified, broken and weak
But now something had changed.I was evolving.Yes, the pain was still there. The fear too.
But I was no longer the helpless girl who cried at every command.
I was someone learning how to survive.
Someone growing stronger inside a world designed to crush people like me.
I straightened my shoulders.
I would survive this.No matter what.
I quickly dressed and hurried toward the kitchen.
If I worked hard enough, maybe today would be a good day. Maybe today I could make something nice for Micky. And something for Kane as well.
By the time he woke up, breakfast would be ready.
That thought alone pushed me to move faster.
Inside the kitchen, the early morning air felt peaceful.
I began preparing the ingredients, moving quickly as I organized everything.
Then suddenly, a noise outside caught my attention.
Voices that were struggling.I paused.
Slowly, I walked toward the window and looked out.
My eyes widened.
Several men were dragging someone across the courtyard toward the mansion. The person was struggling violently.
My heart sank.
Someone had fallen into Kane’s bad books.
I felt a wave of pity.
Anyone who angered Kane rarely survived.
I really hoped whoever it was would make it out alive.
Then I heard the voice.
“Let go of me!”
The sound hit me like lightning.
My heart stopped. That voice…I leaned closer to the window.
My eyes focused on the person they were holding.
And suddenly my breath caught in my throat.
Kate.My hands flew to my mouth.
Kate?
Kate was alive.
Kane hadn’t killed her.
A rush of relief filled me.
But it vanished just as quickly.Because I knew exactly what would happen if Kane decided she had betrayed him.Kate would die.
No.
No no no.
I couldn’t let that happen.
Not after everything she had done to help me
escape.
My heart began to pound as panic flooded through my chest.
“I won’t let her die,” I whispered.
I didn’t even think anymore.
My body moved on instinct.
I ran toward the kitchen door as fast as I could.
Because somehow….I had to save
