Chapter 35

Chapter 35: He Is Coming for You

Lena's POV

The old woman’s words sent a chill through me. When I turned to look at her, she had a creepy smile on her face—then, just like that, she vanished, as if she had never been in the crowd.

My heart skipped a beat. I glanced around the gathering, but she was nowhere to be found.

"Why did Lena murder the man she loves?"

A young girl's voice snapped me out of my thoughts, pulling me back to reality. Yet, I couldn't shake the old woman’s warning. Who was she talking about? Who was coming for me?

Even though I tried to focus, my mind kept replaying her eerie words. Then, I felt a gentle pat on my hand.

“Lena, are you okay?” James whispered.

I blinked a few times, trying to push away the fear creeping up my spine. Maybe I was just imagining things. It happens—especially to writers.

Taking a deep breath, I forced a smile. “Yeah, I’m fine,” I replied before turning my attention back to the girl who had asked the question.

“Could you repeat that?” I asked, maintaining my composure as if nothing had happened.

The young girl nodded. “Why did Lena murder the man she loves?”

I parted my lips to speak, but no words came out. The truth was, I didn’t even know why I wrote that Lena killed Arank. I had no real reason for her betrayal—no hidden motive. It had just felt right, felt interesting, to write her story that way.

Everyone wanted an answer. Readers kept commenting, demanding to know why she had done it. But the truth was, I had nothing to prove. That’s why they kept asking me to continue the book—because even I didn’t have all the answers.

After a few seconds of silence, I sighed and smiled at the girl.

"She wanted to be independent and free from the alien clan. She longed for a world where only humans existed," I answered.

The fans were amazed by my response and erupted into applause. More questions flooded in, and I did my best to answer each one thrown at me.

By the time the fan meeting ended, I couldn’t wait to get home. Sitting for hours, answering countless questions about my work—it wasn’t easy at all.

With the help of the bouncers clearing the fans away, I finally managed to make my way out of the hall. As I stepped outside, James approached me.

"Do you need a ride?" he asked, motioning toward his brand-new BMW—the latest model.

I glanced at the car and then at him. I hadn’t planned on accepting a ride, but it would be rude to turn down the offer from my host. Smiling politely, I nodded, and he gestured for me to step forward before joining me.

As we walked toward his car, a strange sensation washed over me—like someone was watching me intensely.

I tilted my head slightly, scanning the area, but I couldn’t pinpoint anyone in particular. The crowd made it impossible to focus. People were still eager to approach me, but the bouncers held them back.

No one dared to come closer, yet I could still feel that piercing gaze, as if someone was tracking my every move.

Once inside the car, James handed me a bucket of ice-cold champagne.

"To celebrate your first fan meeting," he said with a grin.

I was surprised but not shocked. James was the son of one of the wealthiest men in N City and the heir to YC Entertainment—the company that was turning my book into a movie. I was lucky they had taken an interest in my work; collaborating with YC Entertainment wasn’t easy. A lot of authors had tried their best to collaborate with them but the YC Entertainment was too selective when it comes to business.

The day I saw their invitation email, I was speechless and quickly accepted the offer with any hesitation.

"James, you really didn’t have to," I protested.

But he insisted. "It's your day. You should enjoy it to the fullest."

I didn’t resist. I popped open the champagne, poured some into a glass, and took a sip as James started the car and drove off.

Soon, we arrived at my apartment building, a three-story complex occupied by young civilians like me. I stepped out of the car, and James followed.

"You did well today," he said, nodding slightly.

I smiled. I never understood why he was always nervous around me. Maybe he was just shy around women.

"Yeah. See you later," I replied, waving him off before heading to the gate.

It wasn’t that I wasn’t into guys, but James was a "hot cake", a handsome prince of every girl's dream. Especially girls like Rossa. That was one of the reasons I preferred keeping our relationship strictly business.

As I reached the gate, he called out, "Have a good night’s rest!"

I smiled and waved back as he hopped into his car and drove off.

But then, that eerie feeling returned.

The intense gaze.

I glanced around, but the street was empty except for the streetlights and the gatekeeper robot waiting for me to scan my apartment card.

I shuddered. My hands trembled as I quickly scanned the card. The gate opened, granting me access, and I hurried inside, feeling as if the unseen eyes were still following me.

Inside the building, I rushed into the elevator, my heart racing. Even as the doors closed, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched.

When I reached my apartment, I leaned forward, and the AI scanner verified my identity before unlocking the door. Stepping inside, I exhaled deeply, trying to shake off the unsettling sensation.

I needed a hot shower. Maybe that would wash away this strange feeling.

After a long, warm bath, I emerged from the bathroom, a towel wrapped around my chest—only to freeze in place.

A shadow moved behind the curtain on my balcony.

My breath caught.

Someone was watching me.

I panicked and grabbed the nearest object—a cleaning brush—but when I stepped onto the balcony, there was no one there. Only the cold night breeze and the eerie silence of the city.

What’s happening to me? Am I imagining things?

I shook my head and tried to relax, forcing myself to admire the night beauty. The sky was beautiful, calm—yet I couldn't shake off the unease lingering in my chest. But just as I exhaled, a sudden chime rang through my apartment.

The doorbell rang.

I jumped, my heart pounding as I turned to face the living room door.

Who could be ringing my doorbell at this hour?

I glanced at the AI clock on the wall. 11:15 PM. Almost midnight.

My stomach clenched.

Who would be looking for me at this hour?
