Chapter 59 Strange
Ezekiel slammed his back against the wall as if all hope was lost, then slid down to the floor.
Seeing his strange behavior,Evan bent down, kneeling with him.
“Are you okay?”she asked, and he nodded dully.
“What about you?Are you hurt?” Evan shook her head. Her eyes swept around the room, seeing that it was terribly damaged.
“Ezekiel, let's go to another room; this one is a mess now.” Saying that, she helped him get to his feet. Ezekiel leaned on her, and for the first time, Evan saw him looking vulnerable.
“Why do you look…so… weak?” She avoided using the word “vulnerable.”
Ezekiel opened his mouth to speak, but it seemed impossible, as if he had a wound in his throat.
“It's the stupid fire. It's for burning spiritual creatures. Whenever I use it, I get hurt from within,” he struggled, his shoulders shaking. Evan slapped her hands over her mouth in shock.
“Huh?So that means your full ability hasn't been unleashed, right?” Saying this, she saw him give a weak nod.
Guess I'm not the only one,Evan thought to herself.
Vampires have different types of abilities. One person can possess two or more abilities as a vampire. Apart from sharp hearing, keen perception, sharp sight, and speed—which are natural—the other abilities are additions. Ezekiel has the ability of fire, at least that is the only one he makes the world believe he has. But in reality, he has more than ten abilities. He is trying to hide them, else if others discover it, they'll hunt him down.
Almost everyone is obsessed with his ability to produce fire, and he has gained the spotlight because of it. However, most of Zeke's family members his age possess more than one ability, so it's strange and suspicious for Ezekiel to have one. To avoid much trouble over the years, his mother said his short temper might be one of his abilities, but no one seemed to believe that. It got worse, so Lord Raphael said his intelligence is also an ability. At least that one sounded believable to everyone, and that's how the topic closed until today.
“But you can't tell anyone. Understand?” Ezekiel's voice softened, as if he was entrusting something to her. Evan nodded to the duke as a smile formed on her lips.
“Let's get you out of here.”
“Don't worry.I can handle it.” With that, he stood up straight and started walking slowly, each step shaky due to the weakness in his body.
It was surprising to let Evan witness this side of him.He couldn't fathom why he did it. They moved into another room not too far from the one they were in.
Evan went on and lit the candle;afterwards, she lighted up the fireplace. All of a sudden, the rain began to pour harder onto the ground. The weather became as cold as ice blocks.
They both got into the bed, laying down and using the sheet to cover themselves. They hugged each other and just remained like that until the next morning.
…
The maids had already set the table, and Evan had already woken up. She went outside the mansion, walking through the garden. Her long hair felt a bit weird on her shoulders; she wasn't that used to it. She remembered when she was still in her teenage days, how long her hair was. Black and beautiful. She used to love her black hair back then, but she guessed now she needed to rethink that.
“Beautiful,” she mumbled. Her mind swept back to Ezekiel's powers. It didn't make any sense how he could actually burn supernatural creatures. According to the law of nature, only the supernatural can challenge the supernatural. Mortals like them don't stand a chance.
“Already awake?”Ezekiel's voice rang out, jolting her back to reality. She spun around, putting a simple smile on her lips.
Seeing her bright smile,Ezekiel's lips lifted.
“Haha, it suits you,” he said.
“Huh?This night dress was changed this morn…” she tried to explain.
“I mean the expression you're wearing. It suits you.” Saying that, Evan felt her cheeks burning a little. Her heartbeat quickened its pace.
Ezekiel let out a dry, satisfying laugh.
“Go freshen up.We have visitors today.” With that, he turned around and left, leaving Evan blinking with curiosity.
…
After Evan was done freshening up, she went downstairs to the dining table. Ezekiel was already waiting for her, tapping one of his fingers on the table rapidly.
“You're here.Have a seat,” he said dramatically, pulling out a chair for her. She took the chair and sat on it, shaking her head inwardly. Breathing out, she stood up and moved to a different chair far away from Ezekiel.
Zeke looked at the girl's stubborn behavior, then glanced back at the food, ignoring her action.
“Eat.I hope you love the food,” he said, picking up the fork and starting to dig in.
Good, he won't be drinking blood today, thought Evan. Taking a good look at the food on the table, she discovered it was scotch eggs. Her jaw fell.
Left with no other option, she started eating as well.
After all, yesterday I survived death, she thought. After they were done eating, she sat down in an armchair in the sitting room, reading a book related to vampires—if vampires can really burn down supernatural creatures. Surprisingly, she found nothing, and she was about to finish the book. She was so disappointed. Ezekiel knew she was curious, so all he needed to do was let her do her research.
After reading the book, she was so tired she just lay on the sofa, already drifting to sleep. The main door jolted her back to the real world. She refused to sit up, too lazy to do so.
“The air,it feels good here,” she heard a voice like a mighty rushing wind. She didn't need to open her eyes to know that was Raphael.
“Lord Raphael.Welcome,” she heard Ezekiel descending the stairs.
“I think you should go inside your room and get some rest,”Ezekiel added. He knew she wasn't sleeping. Evan wondered how he knew. She felt something in her abdomen. Her gut screamed at her. Ezekiel was no ordinary person, no ordinary mortal.
