Chapter 40 Vulnerable
Green smoke puffed out into the air, followed by green liquid that littered the ground. Evan blinked twice, using her hands to cover her face due to embarrassment.
“Must you touch everything?”Ella asked. Her face strained with fury. She bit her button lips in anger.
The smell of the potion was so irritating to Evan's nose. She found it so difficult to breathe.
“Why is that poisonous potion kept in here?”asked Ella as she turned to the lady.
“Haha,my queen. I am as surprised as you,” the girl answered. She and the lady were busy discussing something, meanwhile Evan was there suffocating. She wondered why the potion wasn't affecting Ella and the lady. It was strange as she couldn't breathe. Before she knew it, she couldn't see anything. Her vision was blurry. Her heart slammed hard in her chest. The last thing she heard was voices. The voices were more like spirits.
Evan fell on the ground unmoving.
The lady Ella was talking to gasped with widened eyes.
“What happened?”asked Ella as apprehension was evident in her eyes. Fright gripped her heart.
“Why is she being affected by this potion? It is supposed to affect only vampires,” said the lady. She used both hands to lift up her heavy skirt-like gown that was rolling on the floor.
They both rushed towards Evan, who was lying on the floor. Ella took Evan's hand in hers as she examined the girl.
“Oh no!She's in great danger,” said Ella, making both ladies' hearts skip a beat.
“Let’s take her to my room,” the lady advised.
…
When Evan woke up,she felt her legs heavy. She swallowed the lump in her throat. Her throat tasted bitter to her tongue. Her eyes felt hot as she shot them closed. She felt a sharp pain in her chest, making her sit up and cough out blood onto the ground.
“Evan, are you okay?” Ella ran into the room panting. She knelt down on the wooden floor.
“How are you feeling?”she asked. Her eyes were no way near calm.
They were obviously marked with worry and stress. She had been stressing out ever since she discovered this strange fact. If care isn't properly taken, the girl might die. At least that was Ella's thought.
Thankfully, she is the Witch Queen, so she had enough power to fight the evil witches.
“Ah-!” Evan opened her mouth, trying to bring words out of it. She also felt a pang of pain in her dry throat.
“It's okay, dear. You'll be fine,” Ella said, rubbing Evan's back.
“How did things get to this point?I just wanted us to take a break from my leadership. You've really helped me be a good queen, dear. I wanted to lift the burden from your shoulders a bit,” tears streamed down Ella's eyes as she said those words.
She was so young when the power chose her as queen. The late queen died and she had to immediately take responsibility. To rule. Most of the elderly witches were very angry when they learned about this. A 16-year-old girl chosen to rule them, who had lived for decades.
And then,as if a savior had come, Evan showed up and helped. Evan protected the villagers from black witches. She was scared of absolutely nothing. Her eyes screamed power instead of fright.
Black witches were millions in number and, of course, they would always attack. But thanks to Evan, black witches feared the village of Unity Spring Ville.
Evan didn't speak her words out just for people to know her motives. She let her power speak for her. She grew up knowing she was a slave with no purpose. So finding something to fight for and something to protect was more like a gift to her. She used all her might to fight for it.
The villagers loved her for that, to the extent that when black witches struck, they would all run to her instead of their queen. Evan was said to be the queen's subordinate, but she was more like a friend to Isabella.
Isabella had a very soft spot for Evan and vice versa.
Helping Evan sit,she sat down next to her. Evan just stared into space as she found it difficult to move her head.
She panted the breath out from her throat. Her black short hair was messy and a bit coily.
She hadn't been this vulnerable in her life. Even when she was running away from death and was in need of food, it was much better than this. The blood Evan coughed out was as black as charcoal. This made Ella more frightened. She had taken a deadly potion, one meant for killing vampires only.
“I-I think I'm dying…why?” her voice was as weak as someone could ever imagine.
She struggled to say those words. Her throat faced agony as she spoke.
“What is happening to me?”
“You'll be fine,”was Ella's reply.
A servant came into the room with a mop and a bucket as she cleaned the mess Evan had made on the floor.
“If you know I'll die, please kindly take me to the dark forest,” requested Evan. She spoke as if this was her last day on earth.
Her words brought out tears from Ella’s eyes.
“P-please don't say that,”her words weren't clear due to the crying. She held Evan’s hands in hers.
“Without you,how will I be queen? I'm so empty without you around, please. W-why? Why is this happening? You aren't even a vampire. Why!” Ella cried bitterly, burying her face on the sheets.
Evan moved the back of her hand, patting Ella's head.
“Don't worry.I don't plan on dying,” said Evan. “I love to live, so I'll live,” she added.
Wiping her tears, Ella stared at Evan, who stared back at her. Her once angelic face and bright eyes were dimmed down, as dark as the wary night.
As if something popped into Evan's head, she blinked multiple times.
“Where is Brody?”asked Evan, curious eyes popped out, waiting and also anticipating answers.
“I locked him up.”
