Chapter 37 Dark forest

Chapter 37 Dark forest
“The dead?” Goosebumps emerged on her skin. Her eyes flew open, and her body felt light like a sheet of paper. She saw its skeleton cheekbone move up into a smile. All at once, it sped toward her direction. Instead of running, Evan blinked multiple times just to make sure this wasn't a fantasy.
She saw it pull out a scythe from its back. Its skeleton feathers looked scary. Raising her hand in the air, the scythe in it descended to the ground, intending to lash on Evan. Evan immediately chanted a spell. At the last second, as the scythe was about to land on her skin, she disappeared into the air, leaving the creature mystified.

DARK FOREST

Evan stumbled into something that felt like a hot stream.
“Ough!” she groaned, trying to stabilize her breathing. Her dress was a mess, soaked with water. Her hair rolled down her back, sleek. She flipped her hands, trying to get out of the hot stream.

“Hahaha! You look like a—” Isabella mocked Evan, only to be cut halfway.
“I look like a what? Complete the statement!” Evan demanded, getting up on her feet as she moved roughly to dry land.

Ella breathed out, trying to take back her words. “It's nothing. I mean to say you look like a princess. Haha,” she said, waving her hand as if it was no big deal.
“Pfft, I don't agree with you. I look like a queen, not a princess. Princesses are for losers!” With that, she walked past Ella.
“Tsk tsk. As if.”
“Wow! What is this?” Evan gasped as she stared at the beautiful tree flowers. Taking a good look at the surroundings, Evan was now convinced that this was another planet.
“Thank Lord of the Heavens!” she exclaimed happily as she stared at the sky.
“For what?”
“We're no longer in the land of Greenwave,” Evan exclaimed. She was happy they actually got out of that land. In the four governing lands, Greenwave is the largest. Their landmark is much bigger.
“Girl, you're dreaming, dear. It's all fake!”
“Aren't we in another land?” Evan pouted as her mood dropped.

Her eyes looked like an owl’s, as if waiting for the final verdict.
“Of course we are,” said Isabella, walking in the next direction.
Hearing that, Evan’s expression lit from within. She immediately followed Ella’s trail.
They both arrived in front of a wooden house. It looked expensive but… magical.

Evan stared at the cozy building for a while. It belonged to the late queen of white witches. Now it was passed down to Evan. This was the witches’ (white witches’) home. It was like their kingdom, but the witches dwelled in forests. Many tried to hunt them down; that’s why a queen suggested all witches leave the forest for the world. Little did they know that they were leaving the frying pan for the main fire. From there, many witches were killed mercilessly.
“Now that you say this place is the witches’ true home, what about the waterfall?” asked curious Evan, making sure to squeeze some answers out.

“The late witch queen made a sacrifice there, that’s why. But now I’m gone, it’s all useless!” Isabella explained. She was tired of answering Evan’s curiosity. She thought the girl might change as she was no longer a kid. Evan acted all serious around people, but when it came to Ella… sometimes Ella felt like running—but to where?
“Stop with all your questions and let’s get into the house!” Isabella said, hurrying to the doorknob. She grabbed it, turned it, and then pushed it open. The place was so clean as if someone were currently living in it.

“Is someone living here?” asked Evan as she got inside, her lips as bright as the moon.
“No, dear,” Ella looked over her shoulder, glancing at Evan.
“Why are you so happy, as if you’re a kid who’s been given an apple?” Ella asked, seeing Evan’s expression.
“Haha, so funny. Did you forget we’re adults now? But…” She ran to one of the closest sofas, throwing her body on it. “I have been a kid!” she exclaimed, smiling as she looked up at the ceiling.
“Crazy, crazy! I don’t,” Isabella growled. She walked and sat down beside Evan.

Ella let out a deep sigh.
“How is everyone?” asked Evan. Though her tone sounded unbothered, she was happy.
“They’re all good. It’s so traumatizing to watch that deadly scene. It’s a miracle no one got hurt.”

“Thanks, Evan. Without you, I wouldn’t have made an excellent queen.”
“Oh, please don’t start with that drama.”
“Hahaha, you’re truly a genius…”

Knock, knock!!
Someone knocked on the door, and it immediately swung open. Rose came in.
“My queen,” she gave a slight bow. “I’ve made sure that everyone is all settled in. Me and Rebecca have sealed the walls of the forest.”
“Good job. You can leave.” The maid gave a slight bow that seemed dry.

Later in the day, Evan and Isabella sat under an orange tree. They both sat there, unmoving.
“I am hungry!” complained Evan. The oranges up the tree made her mouth water.
“I am not your mother. Go and get one for yourself, dear,” Isabella replied lazily, holding a newspaper in one hand, reading, completely glued to it.
“Huh? Haha,” laughed Isabella.
“What is wrong?” Evan asked, her brows knitting together.
“It’s so strange! Your face is drawn everywhere, and it says you’re a savior and you were lost. Your master is calling on to you! He wants you back!”

Evan’s face flushed red. “Which master?”
“Are you seriously asking that? You know I really don’t know who your master is,” Isabella got up from her seat, walking around in circles. Her long skirt hid her elegant legs. As she walked, the dress swept the floor as if completing the leftover words.
Evan sat upright, fidgeting with her fingers.
“How do you think they know who I am? And how am I a savior? Or is it my blood Ezekiel was drinking?”
