Chapter 120 - Grandpa’s Drama Was Worth It
A few months later...
Amber stood in the kitchen, humming softly as she prepared Stefan's favorite dish, a sense of contentment filling her. Her body had grown heavier over the last few months, and though she was tired, she felt ready—ready to meet their baby, ready to embrace motherhood with Stefan by her side. She smiled at the thought that Stefan had been more attentive than ever, constantly checking on her and spoiling her with every little thing she craved.
Just as she reached for the spices, she suddenly felt a strange sensation. Her breath hitched, and a second later, something broke inside her, followed by the unmistakable rush of water flowing down her legs. It took her a split second to realize what was happening, her heart jumping into her throat.
"Oh my God," Amber gasped, grabbing the counter for support as a wave of excitement and fear crashed over her. "Honey!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the house. She tried to stay calm, but her voice trembled with urgency. "We're having a baby!"
Stefan, who was in the next room on an important business call, immediately froze at Amber's voice. His heart stopped for a moment before racing as the words sunk in. "We're having a baby." Nothing mattered more than that. He dropped the phone mid-conversation, not even caring about the stunned executive on the other end.
"Amber!" Stefan called out as he rushed into the kitchen, his heart pounding. He found her standing by the counter, wide-eyed, her hands trembling. The look of uncertainty in her eyes made his stomach tighten with panic, but he kept his composure, knowing he needed to stay strong for her.
"Okay, okay, I got you," Stefan said breathlessly, scooping her into his arms without hesitation. His mind raced with a million thoughts, but the one that stayed constant was: Get her to the hospital. Now.
His assistant, Norman, had been on standby, anticipating when Amber's due date approached. The staff was well-prepared, and within minutes, the driver had the car running, and the maids had gathered all the essentials needed for the hospital.
Stefan carried Amber to the waiting car, and he felt her body tense in his arms. "It's going to be okay," he whispered, trying to reassure her. But in truth, his own heart was racing, adrenaline pumping through his veins. He had never felt so anxious, and the fear of the unknown gnawed at him.
Amber's contractions grew stronger in the car, and she gripped Stefan's hand tightly, her knuckles white. Her breathing grew ragged as another wave of pain hit. Stefan felt utterly helpless, his usual calm and calculated demeanor crumbling in the face of his wife's pain.
"Stefan, it hurts," Amber whimpered, her voice strained as she tried to breathe through the contraction. Her body ached, and she could feel the baby pressing lower, the overwhelming urge to push starting to build.
Stefan leaned closer, his hand caressing her arm, her shoulder, anywhere he thought it might offer her comfort. "I know, sweetheart. I know. We're almost there, okay? Just hold on for a little longer." His voice trembled, betraying the panic he tried to suppress.
Amber clenched her teeth as another contraction surged through her. "I... I need to push, Stefan," she panted, squeezing his hand with a strength that surprised him. "I can't wait... the baby's coming now."
Stefan's heart leaped into his throat. "Baby, we're almost there," he said, trying to stay calm, though inside he was anything but. "Just a few more minutes, I swear. Let the doctors handle it, please."
But Amber shook her head, her body instinctively preparing for the birth. "I can't!" she cried, her breath in short gasps. "I need to push, Stefan. Now."
"I—okay, okay," Stefan stammered, his heart pounding as he tried to process what was happening. Amber's grip on his arm was relentless, her nails digging deep into his skin, grounding him in the chaotic storm of emotions swirling around them. He swallowed hard to keep calm, but panic clawed at him.
"Sweetheart, we're so close," he pleaded, glancing nervously out the car window as they sped toward the hospital. "Can you hold on? Just a little longer?"
Amber shook her head, her face contorted in pain, her breathing ragged. "No, Stefan... I can't! Please, I need you..." Her voice was hoarse with desperation, and that raw emotion shattered something inside him.
He had never felt more helpless in his life. Stefan prided himself on being in control, but this—the woman he loved more than anything, in so much pain—was beyond anything he could fix with power or influence. All he could do was be there, and at that moment, he swore he'd do anything for her and their baby.
The car screeched to a halt at the hospital entrance, and a flurry of staff was already rushing toward them. Nurses and doctors swiftly surrounded Amber, helping her out of the car and onto a stretcher. Stefan followed closely, his legs feeling like lead as he watched her being whisked away through the hospital corridors. His heart hammered in his chest, every second dragging by painfully as they pushed through double doors and into the delivery room.
In no time, Amber was settled into the hospital bed, surrounded by medical staff. The room was a blur of movement and beeping monitors, but Amber's focus was singular—she was in labor, and their baby was coming now. Stefan hovered nearby, unsure of where to stand or how to help, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. He wanted to comfort his wife and do something, but all he could do was watch in awe at the strength she exuded.
Amber lay back, her face flushed, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps as the contractions intensified. The nurse instructed her to push, and Stefan stepped closer, instinctively reaching for her hand. She grabbed it, squeezing it with all her might, and Stefan held on, silently offering all the strength he could muster.
Time seemed to stretch and collapse in on itself as Amber pushed, her determination fierce despite the pain. Stefan could see the exhaustion etched on her face, but there was something else, too—an unyielding resolve. She was bringing their child into the world, and nothing could stop her.
After a little while and an instant, the doctor's voice rang out clearly, cutting through the haze. "Here we go. One more big push, Mrs. Morgan."
With a final surge of effort, Amber groaned, and then the room was filled with a different sound—their newborn son's piercing, beautiful cry.
Stefan's breath caught in his throat. His entire world shifted in that instant as the doctor placed the tiny, crying baby on Amber's chest. Tears welled up in his eyes, and without realizing it, they spilled over, streaming down his cheeks. He wasn't the type to cry, but there was no holding back the overwhelming rush of emotion.
Amber, too, was crying—tears of joy, exhaustion, and pure love—as she cradled their son close, her chest rising and falling with deep, relieved breaths. She looked up at Stefan, her eyes shining with pride and tenderness, and he felt his heart swell.
"We did it," she whispered, her voice trembling but full of awe. "Honey, he's here."
Stefan knelt beside the bed, his hand still in hers, his other reaching out to gently stroke their son's soft, dark hair. He was perfect, small, and fragile, yet the most potent thing Stefan had ever seen.
"Sweetheart, he's beautiful," Stefan choked out, his voice thick with emotion. "You're incredible." He leaned forward and kissed her forehead, lingering there momentarily as the weight of everything settled over him.
Amber smiled weakly, her fingers brushing lightly over their son's tiny face. "He's ours," she murmured, her voice soft and full of wonder. Our baby boy."
Stefan could only nod, words failing him as he stared at their son. This little life they had created together, born from their love, had changed everything. He bent down to kiss their son's forehead, the tears still streaming down his face.
As they were transferred to their own room, the door opened, and in strode Grandpa Logan, his cane tapping softly against the tiled floor as he entered with a wide grin. His eyes immediately went to the baby in Amber's arms, his face softening as he drew closer. Amber shifted slightly so Grandpa Logan could better look at his great-grandson.
Logan leaned over, inspecting the tiny face intently. A nostalgic smile tugged at the corners of his lips, and he exhaled slowly. "He's got Catherine's eyes," he said softly, his voice full of fond remembrance. "I knew he looked familiar the moment I looked at him." He glanced at Amber, his expression warm. "Just like your mother."
Amber's eyes widened slightly, realization dawning. She had always
wondered why Logan had said she looked familiar when they first met.
Now, it all made sense. She smiled, feeling a strange comfort in the connection. "I never knew you knew my mother so well," she murmured.
Logan chuckled, a mischievous glint in his eye as he straightened. "Oh, I knew Catherine, alright. She was a brilliant woman. Sharp as a tack and a real force to be reckoned with when she managed the family businesses." He sighed, his smile turning wistful. "Jonathan always got the credit, but Catherine made things run smoothly."
Stefan glanced at Amber, surprise flickering in his gaze. This was new information, but it fit the picture of Amber's mother that she had always carried in her heart. Amber kissed her son softly on the forehead, silently thanking her mother for everything.
Grandpa Logan's expression suddenly shifted, turning playful as he waved a hand dramatically. "And now, all my schemes have paid off!" he declared, his voice rising with mock grandeur. "Look at him! My great-grandson is healthy and strong. All that fuss was worth it!"
Amber's brow furrowed slightly. "What do you mean, all your fuss?"
Logan's eyes twinkled with humor. "Oh, the illness. I never had anything life-threatening." He let out a hearty laugh, shaking his head. "I made it all up."
Stefan's mouth dropped open in disbelief. "You... what?"
Logan shrugged, unrepentant. "I needed a way to get you two back together, to stop you from that nonsense divorce talk. So I may have... exaggerated my condition a little."
Amber's jaw dropped. She stared at the old man in shock, but slowly, a smile began to form on her lips. The absurdity of it all started to sink in, and soon enough, she let out a disbelieving laugh.
"You faked an illness... to fix our marriage?" She couldn't decide whether to be mad or grateful.
Logan nodded, completely unapologetic. "Exactly. And look where we are now. Happy family, no talk of divorce. You're welcome."
Stefan shook his head, half-amused, half-frustrated. "Grandpa, you could've just talked to us instead of nearly giving us both a heart attack with all that."
Logan waved a dismissive hand. "Where's the fun in that? Besides, look at you now—husband, father. All because of my little drama." He looked down at the baby, his expression softening again. "And trust me, it was all worth it."
Amber shook her head in disbelief, but she couldn't deny it. Logan's crazy plan had worked. She looked at Stefan, their son, and back at Logan, a smile on her lips. Despite everything, they were exactly where they were meant to be as a family.
