Chapter 105 - Confessions
When Amber woke up, she was in a hospital bed. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air, and the steady beeping of machines was the only sound. Her body ached and felt weak, but her first thought was of Stefan.
"Stefan..." she whispered, her voice hoarse.
A nurse appeared beside her. "Mrs. Morgan, you're awake. Try to stay calm. You've been through a lot."
"Where's my husband?" Amber asked, her eyes filling with tears. "Is he... is he okay?"
The nurse's expression softened. "He's in surgery. The doctors are doing everything they can. You need to rest."
Amber's heart ached with worry and guilt. She closed her eyes, praying for Stefan's recovery. She couldn't bear the thought of losing him, not after everything they had been through. Tears slid down her cheeks as she whispered, "Please, let him be okay."
Meanwhile, in the operating room, Stefan fought for his life. The doctors worked tirelessly to remove the bullets and stabilize his condition. As the hours passed, the tension in the room was palpable. Everyone knew how much was at stake. He is a Morgan from a wealthy and influential family.
Back in her hospital bed, Amber clung to hope. She couldn't lose Stefan, not now. She needed him, and more than anything, she needed to tell him about their baby.
In the sterile, white hallways of the hospital, Amber moved with a determination born of desperation. Her body still ached from Katrina's assault, but she couldn't stay in her room any longer, not knowing if Stefan was fighting for his life just a few floors away. The night nurse tried to stop her, but Amber's pleading eyes and need to see Stefan convinced the nurse to let her go.
When she entered the ICU, her breath caught in her throat. Stefan lay motionless on the bed, tubes and wires connected to machines that beeped and whirred. His face was pale, and his chest's rhythmic rise and fall seemed too shallow. Amber's heart shattered at the sight.
She moved closer, her legs weak, and sank into the chair beside his bed. Tears streamed down her face as she reached out, her fingers trembling, and gently touched his hand. "Stefan," she whispered, her voice breaking.
"I'm so sorry. This is all my fault."
Her mind was a whirlwind of guilt and fear. She blamed herself for not telling Stefan about Katrina's hatred, for not being honest about her investigation, and for keeping the pregnancy a secret. "I should have told you everything," she sobbed, clutching his hand as if her touch alone could pull him back to consciousness.
With a deep breath, she steadied herself, feeling the weight of her emotions pressing down on her. "I love you, Stefan," she confessed, her voice a mix of pain and hope. "I love you so much. I should have told you sooner. I should have fought harder for us."
She leaned closer, her tears falling onto the crisp, white sheets. "Please, wake up. We have so much to talk about, so much to fix. I can't do this without you. We can build our family again. Just come back to me, Stefan."
The room was silent except for the steady beeping of the heart monitor. Amber's heart ached with the intensity of her plea. She squeezed his hand, willing him to respond, to give her any sign that he could hear her.
"Don't leave me," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "We need you. I need you."
The tears continued to flow as Amber laid her head on the bed beside him, her body shaking with silent sobs. She stayed there, holding his hand, praying for a miracle.
Suddenly, Stefan's eyelids fluttered open, and he blinked a few times before focusing on his wife's tear-streaked face. "Amber," he said, his voice hoarse but filled with warmth.
Amber gasped, her eyes widening in shock. "Stefan! You're awake!" Her face turned a deep shade of crimson as she realized he had heard everything. She tried to compose herself, wiping her tears hastily.
"I-I thought you were... I mean, the doctors said..."
Stefan smiled weakly, enjoying Amber's blushing. "Turns out I'm tougher than I look," he joked lightly. "Did I hear you say something about... love?"
Amber's blush deepened, and she averted her gaze, desperately wishing she could disappear. "I... I was just... I didn't know you could hear me," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.
Stefan's grip on her hand tightened slightly, anchoring her to the moment. "Come on, Amber," he teased gently, "repeat it. I want to hear it."
Amber's heart raced, and she felt like the room was closing in on her. She tried to pull away, but Stefan's grip was firm. "Stefan, this is embarrassing," she muttered, her eyes darting around the room as if looking for an escape route.
He chuckled, the sound soothing her frayed nerves. "Don't walk away, Amber. Please," he said, his tone turning more serious. "I need to know. Did you mean what you said?"
Amber swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his gaze on her. She took a deep breath, mustering all her courage. "Yes, Stefan," she admitted softly.
"I meant every word. I love you. I fell in love with you for a while now."
Stefan's eyes softened, and he gently pulled her closer. "I'm glad to hear that," he said, his voice filled with sincerity. "Because I love you too, Amber. I always have. I was too afraid to admit it, of getting hurt again."
Amber's eyes welled up again, but there were tears of relief and joy. "Stefan..." she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. Did he mean what he said? He loved her, too. He changed his demeanor from an authoritative man to a soft-hearten.
He reached up and cupped her face, his thumb gently brushing away her tears. "Let's give this another chance," he said earnestly. "Let's build our family and make it stronger than ever."
Amber nodded, her heart soaring with hope. "Yes, Stefan. Let's do that."
Stefan pulled her for a tight hug. As he held her, he touched some of Amber's bruises on her arms, his face etched with worry.
"Baby, are you okay? Did they hurt you so much?"
Amber nodded, her body shaking, tears falling again, remembering how Katrina whipped her mercilessly. "Stefan, Katrina... she whipped me."
Stefan's eyes filled with pain and guilt. "I'm so sorry, baby. I should have been there sooner. I should have protected you."
"It's not your fault," Amber whispered, her voice breaking. "You saved me. That's all that matters."
Stefan gently stroked a finger on her delicate face and pulled her into his arms, holding her close. "I'll never let anyone hurt you again, baby. I promise."
"I was so scared," Amber whispered, her voice breaking. "I thought... I thought they were going to—"
"Shh," Stefan interrupted gently, brushing a tear from her cheek. "You're safe now. I won't let anyone hurt you."
His jaw tightened as anger bubbled inside him. "Katrina and all the people behind it will suffer the consequences of their actions. I promised."
Stefan's mind raced. This ordeal showed him how much he cared for Amber and how far he was willing to go to protect her. Whatever issues lay between them, he knew one thing for sure: he would do anything to keep her safe, even to the extent of giving his own life.
