Chapter 40 This Wave Is Steady
Chapter 40 This Wave Is Steady
Seeing Olivia nod in agreement, Doris immediately had her husband drive over a beat-up old pickup truck.
While urging Olivia to get in, she said somewhat apologetically:
"The truck may be old, but it's reliable. Come on, let me help you up."
Olivia dodged her touch for what felt like the hundredth time.
She clearly saw a flash of annoyed impatience in Doris's eyes, but in the blink of an eye, the woman showed a hurt expression instead.
The reporters present all felt sympathetic.
They even all sided with the couple, wanting to morally pressure Olivia.
"Even if they're strangers, when someone shows you such kindness, you shouldn't treat them this way!"
"Good grades are important, but good character is more important."
"If the test results show you're blood-related, I guarantee that after I publish this article, the University of Washington definitely won't accept you!"
The couple saw how supportive everyone was, making their earlier performance worthwhile.
They were even more determined to claim Olivia as their own.
"There's a testing facility just two blocks away, not far at all. Child, please get in the car."
Doris thought that with everyone pressuring Olivia like this, she would surely give in.
But unexpectedly, Olivia took another step back, her face still wearing that calm expression.
She didn't look like someone involved, but rather like an observer.
Doris's heart sank.
She had thought Olivia, being just a bookworm who only knew how to study with no social experience, would be easy to handle. She didn't expect her to be such a tough nut to crack!
Doris and her husband exchanged glances, both seeing the seriousness in each other's eyes.
Just as both sides were at a standstill, a stretch Lincoln stopped in front of Olivia.
The window rolled down, revealing Evan's exceptionally handsome face.
"Need an Uber ride?"
Olivia raised an eyebrow. She had just been about to call a car, and he showed up right on time.
For a moment, Olivia almost thought he was a mind reader.
But she still opened the car door and got in.
Seeing this, Doris immediately hid her torn sleeves and nudged her dazed husband with her elbow.
Robert also quickly copied his wife, hiding his worn-out clothes.
This scene once again triggered collective sympathy from the reporters.
"This Olivia definitely has character problems. Let's all work together - once the test results come out, we'll expose her!"
Sitting in the spacious luxury car, Olivia didn't care at all about what others thought.
Evan beside her spoke first:
"If you can't handle this, I can help you."
Olivia glanced at him and suddenly smiled:
"Aren't you afraid they really are my parents?"
Evan asked back:
"Would you believe it?"
Olivia laughed.
This was the first time she'd met someone who understood her so well.
The weather was nice, and Olivia had kept the window open.
While waiting at a red light, a sports car pulled up alongside them.
Olivia paid no attention.
But Joseph in the driver's seat spotted Olivia right away.
He pulled off his sunglasses in one motion, showing his most confident smile, and greeted Olivia:
"Miss Hart, what a coincidence, we meet again. I think this is fate."
As he spoke, Joseph confidently ran his fingers through his hair.
He'd used this move to win over plenty of beautiful women before, and he believed this time would be no different.
Thinking this, Joseph's smile grew even wider.
Olivia glanced over briefly, then immediately looked away.
New money vibes mixed with a hint of foolishness - this kid was practically advertising "stupid rich guy" on his forehead.
Seeing that Olivia wasn't moved, Joseph paused for a moment, then suddenly understood:
"Don't worry, Lena and I aren't engaged, and I made it clear to her that from now on, you'll be my only one."
Then, he deliberately lowered his voice, using what he thought was a deep, husky, sexy tone to say to Olivia:
"Woman, you've successfully caught my attention."
Olivia involuntarily shuddered.
That breathy voice was so greasy, she wouldn't need to use oil in her cooking for the next week.
Frowning, Olivia was about to tell him to face reality when Evan, who had been handling business matters beside her, suddenly put down his laptop and leaned out through Olivia's window with a smile.
"Joseph, you have good taste."
Evan said this with a smile, but the smile didn't reach his eyes, and his gaze at Joseph carried deep hostility.
The moment Joseph heard Evan's voice, he instinctively sat up straight.
This was a fear ingrained in his bones.
Seeing how Evan looked at him, Joseph immediately got it.
"Bro- brother, no, I mean sister-in-law- no no... my neutered dog got pregnant, I need to go take care of her, I'm leaving now."
With that, Joseph hit the gas, and the luxury car sped away, disappearing in a flash.
Olivia understood.
These rich people - their circle was just that small.
Whether it was family background or personal ability, Evan was outstanding among them.
Making his peers this scared was pretty normal.
After this little episode, the car soon arrived smoothly at a nearby hospital.
Olivia stood at the entrance and waited for a while before the couple and a group of reporters finally showed up.
Next came the normal process of blood drawing, sample collection, and waiting for test results.
But during the process, Olivia noticed that the doctor and the couple were trying hard to avoid eye contact.
She immediately understood that the test report would definitely show they were related.
So before leaving, she quietly collected hair samples with follicles from both of them, then went to a well-known major hospital in City A to do another paternity test.
When she returned to the orphanage, the couple was still at the entrance playing the victim for the many reporters.
Olivia didn't even glance at them and went straight inside.
The couple looked like they wanted to say something but held back, tears flowing non-stop.
This scene, seen by the reporters, filled them with anger.
"Don't worry, as long as the results show a blood relationship, we'll definitely report it truthfully!"
"I'm already bursting with inspiration!"
"I wish I could write a ten-thousand-word column right now!"
The couple exchanged glances, thinking to themselves:
This is in the bag!
