Chapter 310: This Is Reality
“Aidan, maybe you should just keep him as a regular security guard,” Alison protested.
Feeling uneasy, she worried Gabriel would do something wrong at YD.
“No need. I’ve already decided that,” Aidan said, planning to let people constantly monitor Gabriel’s every move — he needed to find out Gabriel’s true purpose.
“Aidan, I…” Alison felt a pang of guilt, realizing she was causing him trouble.
“It’s my decision; I’ll see it through. But, Alison, you’d be wise to keep your distance from him,” he added.
“Understood, Aidan. Thank you.” She nodded, then turned quickly toward the door before he could say anything more.
No sooner had she returned to her seat than her phone rang.
“Miss Fairchild, I’m at the entrance of the YD Building,” Gabriel said.
“Come in. Wait for me in the lobby. I’ll be right down,” she replied.
Though she harboured many reservations about his past, she had been the one who suggested bringing him on board — and now she had to see it through.
Just as she was about to stand up, Aidan’s secretary, Mia Singh, approached with a stack of documents.
“Miss Fairchild, these are the tasks the president offers. You should complete them today.”
Good heavens — so much?
“All right, I’ll do my best to get through them,” Alison said with a smile, knowing clearly that Aidan was deliberately preventing her from seeing Gabriel.
Despite this, she decided to handle Gabriel’s matter first. She hurried into the elevator.
Meanwhile, Aidan was watching the monitor, his frown deepening.
It’s time to do something, he thought grimly.
Alison entered the lobby, drawing many glances.
She strode over to Gabriel.
She was tempted to take his hand, but ultimately held back in the bustling lobby.
“Come with me,” she said.
“Miss Fairchild, I can go on my own. Don’t need to escort me,” he objected.
“No, you should. You’re unfamiliar with them,” she insisted.
“Just tell me which floor. I can find it myself,” he said coldly.
Feeling a surge of irritation, she grabbed his hand. “Come with me.”
Just then, a camera clicked, capturing a clear image of her gripping his hand.
“Let go,” Gabriel murmured, feeling uneasy under the gazes.
Alison ignored him.
They stepped into the elevator together.
Amidst the crowd, she clutched his hand tightly.
Though reluctant, he didn’t pull away.
“Look, isn’t that Alison? How shameless of her to come back to work with a man in tow.”
A low female voice reached Alison’s ears.
Her hand twitched — but it soon calmed down.
Suddenly, she felt the large hand in hers tighten, gripping hers firmly in return.
She looked up and met Gabriel’s gaze.
Staring into his eyes, she felt momentarily dazed.
Why does he look so much like Jack?
A ding sounded as the elevator stopped.
Alison hurriedly pulled Gabriel out.
As they walked down the hallway, she pointed toward the administration office.
“Go handle the paperwork there first. I’ll wait for you here. Just tell them you’re Gabriel.”
“Ok,” he responded with a single word before finally releasing her hand.
Watching his retreating figure, she suddenly wondered if she had been overly attentive.
After a long wait, he finally emerged.
She stepped forward. “All done?”
Standing together, they resembled longtime lovers, drawing whispers from those around them.
Gabriel stopped in front of her, asking, “Isn’t the position a bit too high?”
“As long as you like it,” she replied with a smile.
“No, I don’t like it. I only want to be an ordinary security guard,” he said, as cold as ever.
“Gabriel, security work is demanding, even working at night,” she reminded him.
“It’s fine,” Gabriel insisted.
His tone remained glacial, but beneath it, something unreadable stirred — something that made her chest ache.
