Chapter 245: He’s So Handsome (Part 2)
“Aunt Cassandra’s doing well,” Jack said gently. “Once you’re recovered, you’ll be able to visit her yourself.”
“Jack, can you take care of everything at YD for now? I’ll give you full authority,” Aidan said seriously.
“All right, Aidan. I’ll do my best,” Jack agreed.
“Alison, come here for a second,” Aidan called softly.
“Jack,” Aidan continued with disarming ease, “I want to marry Alison. I hope you’ll stand by me.”
Alison opened her mouth to speak, but Jack forced a calm smile despite the tension knotting his chest. “Of course I will. But with your current condition, marriage has to wait.”
Aidan clasped Alison’s hand tightly. “That’s for sure. I’ll work hard to recover. Will you wait for me, Alison?”
Alison glanced at Jack, flustered by Aidan’s question.
She was caught in a dilemma. A blush spread across her cheeks, and her fingers instinctively twisted the hem of her shirt.
Jack smiled faintly, covering the strain in his eyes. “Aidan, she’ll wait for you. Don’t worry about the company—I’ll handle everything.”
Alison only half-heard their voices. My mind’s a fog… She stood frozen until Aidan gently squeezed her hand.
“Alison,” he murmured, “Jack’s leaving. See him off for me, okay?”
She blinked, snapping back to reality. As she turned toward the door, Jack shook his head. “It’s fine, Alison. Stay and look after him.”
Aidan’s fingers tightened on her arm, afraid she really might follow Jack.
Alison could only watch him walk away; her mind was a mess.
“Alison, what’s on your mind?” Aidan asked, watching her.
“No-Nothing,” she replied.
“Something’s bothering you, isn’t it?” he pressed.
“Really, nothing, Aidan,” she said, forcing a smile.
“Come on, I can tell,” he insisted. “You’ve been lost in thought this whole time.”
“Really? I’m fine,” she lied, her smile trembling.
“I’m glad it’s nothing. You scared me to death.”
Aidan spoke with genuine sincerity.
“Alison, I just had this incredibly vivid dream that you left me for good. That wouldn’t happen, would it?”
“Aidan, I won’t leave you.”
Alison stayed in the hospital day and night, tending to Aidan. When she missed her children, she’d meet them outside on the lawn, their laughter briefly easing her heart.
Jack had hired a team of specialists for Aidan’s amnesia, but they all said the same thing—only time could heal it.
But time was a cruelly uncertain cure, and that uncertainty gnawed at her.
One night, Alison dozed off, her head resting on the edge of Aidan’s bed.
Suddenly, a ringing sound startled her awake.
Blinking awake, she saw Aidan already on the phone. He glanced at her and asked, “Why aren’t you sleeping in the cot?”
“I sleep better like this,” she murmured, still half-asleep.
Every time she lay on the nursing bed, memories of Jack, Sophia, and Ethan kept her awake. Curling up by Aidan’s side let her drift off without noticing.
Aidan pinched her nose before answering the call. “Hello? What is it?”
“What? Keep searching!” His tone rose sharply.
Then he roared into the phone, “Turn the entire building upside down if you have to—find Jack!”
Hearing that, Alison asked, “Aidan, what about Jack? Is he missing?”
“Yes. We have an important client coming today. I put the client’s files in the safe and gave Jack the key. Now he’s the only one who can open it. The client has already landed and will be at the office soon,” Aidan said anxiously.
“Then ask Jack if he went to work at YD today,” Alison suggested.
“They said he went in, but no one can find him,” Aidan replied.
“Can’t you reach him on his cell?”
“Tried. It’s turned off.”
Alison frowned. “Aidan, is this client really that important?”
“Extremely important. If this meeting fails, YD stands to lose billions in annual profits,” Aidan emphasized.
Good heavens… that much money? Alison thought.
“Aidan, let me go back and look for him, okay?” she offered quickly.
“You know where he is?”
“No, but I can help look for the safe key. Maybe he left it somewhere—I know your office layout better than anyone.”
“All right, then, hurry back. Thank you,” Aidan urged.
“Welcome. I’m your assistant, after all.”
